Lukyanivka? There’s a McDonald’s there that’ll go down in history it’s been hit and restored so many times

327

u/Difficult-Match-7631 18h ago

Lukyanivka indeed. That McD will be part of war lore of Kyiv - fact.

47

u/-Mr_Hollow- 16h ago

Meanwhile in Kharkiv: about as peaceful as it can get in its proximity to russia, not a single McDonald's have opened since the war started.

u/Away_Candidate_4746 16h ago

Does the ice cream machine work?

32

u/QuietSilentArachnid 15h ago

That's an USA thing. Haven't heard a single European fast food chain using that excuse once.

Ice cream machines at McD is really just an American problem.

Never was an issue in Ukraine.

Interestingly enough it was the first McDonalds on Ukraine's territory, so it was already symbolic even before the war.

61

u/lightyearbuzz 12h ago

McDonald's is actually kind of a big deal to Ukrainians, funnily enough. They closed when the war broke out (or I should say escalated), but reopened a few months later to huge lines and tons of support. Even Ukrainians that didn't like/care about McDonald's went because it was a symbol of westernization in the face of Russian aggression and foreign support not abandoning them.

Weird for me as an American who travels a lot, even lived in Ukraine for a while to support rebuilding efforts, to see McDonald's gain this kind of support. I generally hate the Americanization of all these places around the world, but can't blame the Ukrainians for this one.

•

u/xteve 11h ago

A Romanian friend told me that when McDonald's first opened after the fall of communist rule, they would dress up to go eat there. Partly they just weren't familiar with casual dining, but also it was just kind of a big deal. This was the America of blue jeans, zippo lighters, and Hollywood entertainment - of freedom. It was part of a moment of cultural awakening.

u/jollyreaper2112 4h ago

Man, I miss that version of America. Before America ruined it.

as a brit i cannot even begin to fathom how privileged i am with the fact that "that's just life" horrifies and upsets me.

It wasn't even 100 years ago that people in your location were living the same life, worse even at times.

Talk to every government representative you have, write to the king, whatever it takes -- express your solidarity with Ukraine and its people, and your fear that if you and your nation aren't willing to draw the line and aid Ukraine then who will be left to draw a line or aid you when the next time comes?

65

u/nulla-nomen-eius 16h ago

First they came for Crimea And I did not speak out Because I did not live in Crimea

Then they came for the Donestsk And I did not speak out Because I did not live in Donestsk

Then they came for the Luhansk And I did not speak out Because I did not live in Luhansk

Then they came for all of Ukraine And I did not speak out Because I did not live in Ukraine

Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me

...as individuals we speak out, but we expect our governments to do more than just speak.

23

First they came for Crimea, and I did not speak out because my government allowed Russia Today to brainwash me.

I know you mean well, and it’s not an attack on you personally, but I chuckle every time I hear foreigners say “stay safe there”, like…yeah, we’d very much like to, but it doesn’t really depend on us at all?

Ballistic missiles can get you anywhere, sometimes you don’t even get an alert (and if you do - you have like 2 minutes max to hide anyway). Like, you can be at home, in the office, in the mall, doing regular things, and the next moment you are dead.
Yeah, it’s not safe.

Call and write to every government rep you have, at every level.

Tell them that you support the Ukrainian people, that you want and expect them to represent that support in your government.

Which means not buying Russian diesel and products... not have your leaders call for the Ukrainian president to step down because he refuses to simply give up his country and people.

Reminds me of this video from a while back where a shopkeeper in Yemen is looking out the window as bombs drop across the street. A kid is next to the old dude and old dude just hugs the child trying to comfort him as the bombs keep falling.

•

u/Beerzoom 11h ago

It is interesting how point of view changes here. My nearest mall have been bombed like month ago. Each time I pass through I think that my family could be there at exact strike moment (near 7 pm). And tho I might be dead like 10 times or more.

Tho mental health don’t grow strong, it just pauses or quit the chat. You live as one brick of the system, that has to hold back russians. You just can’t give up, because you have to options: this life with small sparkles of joy or death/slavery by russians.

It’s almost profound the resilience of the indomitable spirit especially for those that have to stay and can’t afford to escape. Imagine being a minimum wage worker at McDonalds and still having to go to work even though the office block opposite was just blown to pieces…. Doubt they’re getting hazard pay

•

u/Kane1412 5h ago

When the war started, like, around April or May, the company I worked for, Auchan, made a video to share with all workers because of backlash over them not closing doors in Russia. They were excusing their business decisions by listing numbers like "we can't leave our co workers from Russia suddenly without income" and other shit.

And then they talk about the Ukrainian spirit and said "just this morning, our co workers from (I can't remember the city) went to work at 9, there was an attack alert at 10 so they rushed to the bunker and by 11 they were back at work again!"

I never felt so disgusted and mad in my life before. The thought that these people, French, (the owners) far from Ukraine were all happy and safe in their mansion while saying this...! The thought they made so much money and yet wouldn't help..!!

Oh that's the lukianivska McDonald's. The building that got hit is a mall, I remember going to the dollar store in it right across the McDonald's. They keep hitting this area a lot for some reason, there used to be some military factory that closed down called artem but it closed to down like 10 years ago and they kept hitting the building and the whole area over dozen times and even hit the children's hospital okhmadit a kilometer away

Trump: But mah diesel!

820

u/Siegfried-IX 18h ago

As a European, I wonder if there are still enough people in America who believe this madman, who support his blatant lies and completely illogical decisions. The man is deranged. You have to wonder how he can still be in office or even alive, but then you remember that he makes policy for the rich, and people would rather let themselves be treated like bitches than stand up against it.

144

u/nulla-nomen-eius 16h ago

Reddit is heavily biased toward those who dislike him -- there's still a frightening level of support for him in reality.

That said, what's most important is the reality that he's got fractures within his party.

It used to be that whatever he said was their gospel, no one would publicly contradict, let alone vote against -- the only party votes against him were clearly planned and strategic allowing those politicians to pander to centerists in their constituency. Or the various retiring politicians who suddenly felt safe to go against him because they weren't seeking re-election (and probably were writing a book or looking for other publicity vehicles to make money).

Lately we're seeing active politicians publicly disagreeing. Removing him from their campaign messaging and similar. Whether this is just public lip service to pander to centerists or not remains to be seen, but I suspect they see the writing on the wall: The party is over with Trump (literally and figuratively).

If the USA is a train moving on a track this is a man who has ordered half the fuel thrown overboard to save weight claiming it will make us faster and more efficient, and ordered the tracks many miles ahead to be disassembled so that he can sell half of the steel to put the proceeds in his and his kids' pockets and the other half of the proceeds he holds up to the people and says "look at all the money I've made this country" -- things weren't great, but he's accelerated the spiral by his short term actions, and especially through the long term changes he's made across all forms of leadership -- it's only our enormous influence and inertia that kept us from collapsing like any other country would have.

It's extremely unlikely that a majority shift in party next month is going to do much because these politicians are feckless, they'll talk and talk, but ultimately they're all in comfortable positions and don't want to disrupt the gravy train that seems to enable ever elected official to eventually become wealthy.

50

u/MoneyBeeeee 15h ago

Reddit is heavily biased toward those who dislike him -- there's still a frightening level of support for him in reality.

I have been banned multiple times for making oblique comments about merely looking forward to a future where I don't have to hear about he-who-must-not-be-named every day.

Reddit deliberately has no way to report misinformation or disinformation. They are happy with the traffic that comes from trolls.

put the proceeds in his and his kids' pockets

I cannot express enough this point, and how absolutely stupid many of his supporters are.

In my area there is a (multi-millionaire) candidate for governor who has said he will refuse or donate his salary -- he's very Trump aligned, even today -- people come out of the woodwork still talking about great Trump is for donating his presidential salary.

Trump is like a contractor that you hired for $50/hr to come fix something in your home... he spends 4 hours in there and says "I won't take any money for the job" and these people will stand there with doe eyes and tears about what a wonderful man he is, meanwhile in those 4 hours he stole half the jewelry out of your bedroom, drank half your OJ straight from the carton in the fridge, and all the money out of your wallet all without you realizing it, or at least not accepting it despite seeing it.

Somewhere around a third of Americans live in an alternate reality, supported by multiple news channels/pundits/communities that have rejected the reality the rest of us share. These loyalists have never wavered.

In that alternate reality, Trump has never lied, all his decisions are logical, and they're all to the personal benefit of his supporters. They really do believe everything is better under Trump.

I really don't think there's anything that could bring them back, because they just reject anything that disputes their view as "fake news".

•

u/SanityReversal 6h ago

My mom and in laws still support him.

When asked about literally anything negative he does or says, they dont know what im talking about and claim im listening to liberal media.

If I show them the white house releases and transcripts, they just say something along the lines of "oh, idk why he would say that but Biden"

80

u/DontEatNitrousOxide 18h ago

depends how much you consider his second election rigged with votes being bought, set on fire, and the bragging from musk about hacking voting machines

58

u/Siegfried-IX 18h ago edited 17h ago

To be honest, I’m even more afraid of the election. That man would never accept defeat, if he is voted out of office, he won’t accept it and will claim once again that the election was rigged. I hope it doesn’t come to domestic military deployments or even a civil war in the States, though the current US administration is certainly capable of that.

When will all these right-wing idiots realize they're just being used to turn the West against each other? Putin and XI are laughing their ass off. While Trump and his sycophants and billionaires are just trying to enrich themselves at your expense without any regard.

Up there, there are only people left who don’t care about you and the people not only lets this happen, but actually supports it?

3

u/mistere213 14h ago

Exactly. I see less people defending and bragging about Trump, but more and more spreading hate and fear about trans people, Muslims, and "communists" (which is anyone who doesn't agree with them). There's barely any "He's Great!" but plenty of "Dems are going to literally murder your unborn baby to sacrifice to a Muslim unless it was going to be born trans!"

6

u/Snoo-35041 15h ago

When the government stopped the equal time rules for media in the 80’s is when the wheels came off. All of the sudden, for profit talk show hosts boomed. And we slowly started to treat politics like a sports team. We must win!

A football game doesn’t end by debate and compromise. But sports teams also make alot of money. So does political media.

People hate to admit they are wrong, and we’ve lost empathy. If your neighbor makes more money than you, you want your neighbor to make less. Instead of saying I should make more.

It’s all quite concerning. Not being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes is a societal downfall.

9

u/Daedalus81 17h ago

Une réalité pour les personnes qui continuent à vivre ou survivre en temps de guerre. La normalité de la vie au quotidien reste une manière de résister.

310

u/Rollover__Hazard 19h ago

I remember hearing from a journalist who was there that people’s social lives have completely broken down into short term situations because no one knows what will happen next. They live their lives week by week, day by day not knowing if it’ll be a ceasefire or another attack or which comes. All the while the relentless barrage of rockets and artillery kill civilians every day while the battle on the frontlines grinds on.

What a horrific place to have to be.

72

u/TashaStarlight 18h ago

Pfft we know that there won't be a ceasefire. There will be another attack, the question is if it does kill you or someone you know this time.

73

u/Majestic-Bar-5618 18h ago

Well, as a Ukrainian I'd say that we are used to assuming there won't be any ceasefire and we'll continue being under fire. The complications coming with it like not living to see another day switched from mortifying to mildly infuriating when we can't got to the place we wanted to be at due to air raid alerts. And yeah, we are thinking of what will happen in half a year, but it's more like dreaming lol.

Actually not that bad here, in Kyiv. You can get used to that

•

u/erik_skr 7h ago

Yep, exactly this. I also live in Kyiv and well. It's not like some existential dread looming over me every day, it felt like that maybe first two months, but you really get used to it. Your psyche can't handle that much of intense emotions really, you either spiral down into very messed up state of mind (some surely did), or the stuff that was like WTF WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE becomes a normal Tuesday. A rocket hits somewhere near, the house shakes, oh well, can I go to sleep again now.

i don't think you can ever really repair the kind of trauma this instills. it has to be bone deep.

64

u/SunTzu- 18h ago

Some of the first instances of being able to identify the impact of generational trauma came about from studying the RNA of holocaust survivors and of their descendants. Kids born after the war ended would "inherit" the same RNA markers as their parents, even though our previous understanding was that RNA wasn't passed down. This is now known as epigenetic inheritance and quite literally proves that the horrors we inflict on populations will echo down the generations.

7

u/RanaMahal 18h ago

How many generations does it take to heal that trauma

24

u/SheJigOnMySawTilIPuz 17h ago

That greatly depends whether the younger generations are given the space and resources to heal and prevent further trauma. Ex. in America for a lot of black people this has been an unbroken issue since slavery because even after black people were "freed" from chattel slavery, they were segregated and forced yet still in to dangerous, traumatic living situations, dangerous jobs etc and forced to develop skills to keep themselves safe from their own neighbors at the cost of health and growth.

12

u/SunTzu- 15h ago

Jim Crow, redlining, the inability to accumulate and pass down wealth, school funding being tied to the value of houses so poor neighborhoods are underfunded... There's a lot there which locked in generational trauma and explains why the ghost of slavery still looms so large among black Americans.

27

It's super annoying when using old.reddit which doesn't have the translation feature, just random languages all over, people thinking the whole subreddit is in their own language because the app is translating etc. etc.

19

u/kontoSenpai 18h ago

I use old reddit too, and It's still always funny because most of the time it's french messages that I see "untranslated", until reddit puts de_irl on my front page.

I was not aware that "new" reddit auto translate, I just thought it's French people not bothered to translate stuff online, as it's often the case in video games where among the see of english messages, you'll have your fair share of french ones.

I'm French too for the record (I'm allowed to make fun of my own), but it always makes me chuckle, as we have a reputation of not giving a fuck about learning english since almost every media accessible in France is localized.

Reading this and then knowing there are people even here in Germany (thank god not the government) that want to end aid... Now the US... I want this fucking war to end, for your country and more importantly your peoples sake

This is so dystopian. At the end of it all, the bombs have fallen, way of life has ended, yet McDonalds continues to thrive

48

u/BulletproofBannana 18h ago

When you think about it it's genius on many levels.

McDonald's is a global corporation with nearly limitless resources. They can rebuild and rebuild many times over and it wouldmt effect their bottom line. What they are doing is providing people in a warzone with some sort of familiar comfort.

Not unlike the "Happy Meal", the people living there might view McDonald's as that one small comfort for a brief moment, like we all remember collecting a toy and going to play in the ball pitt. Thus McDonald's will be rewarded with a customer for life.

I'm sure if people stopped going it would close, but there is obviously a need to keep it open.

14

u/Sithishe 18h ago edited 17h ago

Yeah, you get it. It was very important for us to get McDonald's working again after initial invasion. Its one of the pillars our mentality holds on

I don't know what it's like in Ukraine, but in the US most McDonald's are owned by franchises, aka a small business owner who might have only a single store. McD's corporate provides the branding, menu and suppliers, but it's the owner who actually fronts the capital and pays for insurance, building, rent, wages, etc.

23

u/dlebed 18h ago

It's different in Ukraine. All restaurants in Ukraine belong to and managed by McDonalds Ukraine branch. Not sure McDonalds use this model elsewhere.

9

u/Kagenlim 17h ago

Singaporean. Same thing too, all of McDonald's is handled by a separate private company

→ More replies (2)

12

u/vegarig 18h ago

AFAIK, Ukrainian McD's are directly owned by the parent company, instead of franchising.

Would it be less dystopian if restaurants closed and people had no food...?

10

u/TemporaryJohny 17h ago

"Food"

3

u/Ace612807 14h ago

Yeah, you know what, fuck it

Sometimes you don't want to think about preparing stuff and are game for a relatively cheap and extremely inoffensively tasting burger from McD. Is it healthy? No, but who fucking cares if you can get killed by a Shahed drone in the next 24 hours. People crave at least sone sense of normalcy, and being able to grab some junk food is a part of that

Please just remember that upwards of 90% of the Iranian population passionately hate the regime that rules them. Iranians are basically held hostage to a state that has alien values (from their perspective) and which will kill them publically for demanding even basic human rights.

So hate the regime, have compassion for the people. Everyone inside and outside of Iran wants the regime GONE. Except for the tiny minority that profit from their oppression.

3

How does it feel knowing the Trump admin deliberately chose not to warn them about a massive ballistic missile strike this week? Imagine being the intelligence officer who sat on that information and refused to pass it to Ukrainians, knowing civilians would be killed because of it.

The Trump administration deliberately allowed a terrorist attack to be carried out to extort Ukraine into effectively giving up their sovereignty. Why? To push down diesel prices they are personally responsible for driving up by launching the Iran War.

Because "trending" songs on the impact improve chances to show up on the front page. More videos using the song leads to song trending, leads to those videos being pushed on the algorithm.

It's a way for advertisers to promote music (even if shit) and content creators follow suit because they want to trend

There are more people who make excuses for what is happening in Gaza than for what is happening in Ukraine. People in Ukraine get suppert from the worlds richest and most powerful states to defend themselves, meanwhile people in Gaza have to watch the worlds richest and most powerful states support Israel in their destruction and sanctioning the International Criminal Court for condemning what is happening to them.
