Intriguing Teen arrested and left alone in a second floor interrogation room immediately finds an open window and jumps to make an escape.

I would have fucked the blinds up then hidden behind the desk so they thought I escaped then mission impossible to where they kept my files, and then made my escape by dressing up as one of them and going into the sewer.

And then I'd break into Tiffany's at midnight. Do I go for the vault? No, I go for the chandelier. It's priceless. As I'm taking it down, a woman catches me. She tells me to stop. It's her father's business. She's Tiffany. I say no. We make love all night. In the morning, the cops come and I escape in one of their uniforms. I tell her to meet me in Mexico, but I go to Canada. I don't trust her. Besides, I like the cold. Thirty years later, I get a postcard. I have a son and he's the chief of police. This is where the story gets interesting. I tell Tiffany to meet me in Paris by the Trocadero. She's been waiting for me all these years. She's never taken another lover. I don't care. I don't show up. I go to Berlin. That's where I stashed the chandelier.

I always like that the son being the police chief has no relevance to the rest of the story.

yes both statements are true
36
u/scathing-exasper 2h ago
That’s the kind of “both can be true” situation where the details really matter. being arrested doesn’t make leaving an unsecured second-floor window a great idea.

True, but he was arrested on suspicion of strangulation, so he's up shit creek either way

u/TehStickles 1h ago
In a lot of countries it's not even illegal to escape from jail. Of course you have to finish your time out if you get caught but it's a natural reaction to being locked up.
I probably read it on Reddit but the first time I heard of this I was like that's kind of intuitive if you think about it
7
u/haruku63 48m ago
That’s how it is in Germany.
But, of course, if you use force to get away, you get punished for that. But if you just run away, you are fine, no additional time when you get caught.7
u/Ky_zx10r 1h ago
I always semi agree with that too. I think you should have atleast a little time added for an escape or escape attempt only as a deterrence though. Like if theres no real down side to escaping why not atleast try.
And when I say a little time I mean like 2 weeks or a month, not what the stupid u.s. does
8
u/IGetOffToWingTearing 1h ago
You do still get penalties for any infractions committed during the attempt, and most attempts will involve such infractions
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (3)8
u/Blate_Slank 1h ago
That's fucking stupid though. Why wouldn't you try to escape constantly if there's no consequence?
7
u/gogozombie2 1h ago
AFAIK the act of escaping jail/prison is not illegal, but many of the things one would need to potentially do still are like possessing contraband, trespassing, etc. When I first heard of this it was the respect the right to freedom.
4
u/4_fortytwo_2 40m ago
I mean clearly that isnt happening? This is a real law many countries have and it doesnt lead to constant escape attempts.
Because there are few to no opportunities to escape without breaking any other laws. Like if you punch a guard or break a window to escape that still has consequences.
→ More replies (5)9
u/Davoguha2 1h ago
Why should the most basic of human nature violate a law? Captivity is not a natural condition for us. An escapee stands to potentially commit plenty of crimes on their way out - and they're still guilty of their crimes.
It's not a "if you get out, you're free" type of deal. It just means that following that instinct, in and of itself, is not going to worsen your situation.
5
2
u/superindianslug 35m ago
Did the lack of impulse control make him go out head first? Even on a first floor window I would try to go feet first.
34
u/Weary_Position_9591 2h ago
Yup, absolutely nothing positive will come from this for him
34
u/General_Guest7846 2h ago edited 2h ago
The amount of people I've seen in my life who turn a light punishment into a years long ordeal is pretty mind blowing.
I don't know the context of this clip, but I assume since there's even a window there in the first place that whatever he's arrested for is not that big on the grand scheme of charges, but jumping out that window just increased the wanted star level a good deal.

So my job deals a lot with international fugitives. Are you really willing to derail your entire life and leave everything behind for a couple year sentence?
It’s also not as easy as people make it sound. Countries other than ours have robust immigration laws that make it difficult to flee to.
Also, you can’t just GO to Cuba. As an American, I assure you that you’re not welcome. They discreetly turn over Americans that flee that every now and again. Even if they accepted you, your quality of life will be on par with being in prison.

Suspect, 17, managed to flee the Rock County Sheriff’s Office in Janesville after being left alone in an interview room. The teenager had been hauled from his classroom at Orfordville Parkview High School on October 18 and arrested on suspicion of strangulation in an August 1 assault. Footage shows the teen heading straight for the window as the detective leaves the room. He opens the blinds and pushes the window out before diving headfirst from 12ft up. A second camera picks him up sprinting across the lawn making his getaway. About 14 minutes later, the detective returns to find the room empty and the window wide open.

I’ll bet he landed in a somersault. If he did it right, he would just roll and start running. Wrong with hands cuffed though could be fatal. So my guess is he knows a bit about martial arts or parkour or he would have gone feet first, would have been just as quick afa going through the window.

Huge missed opportunity to use my favorite word, defenestration, in the title, but at least it is here in this comment.
10
u/Lilkeegy 1h ago
Well, defenestration is throwing someone out of a window, while this here is jumping out of a window.
4
u/lastbeer 1h ago
Naturally, in this context I would have used self-defenestration or, my preference, autodefenestration.
4
u/gonzogonzobongo 51m ago
Well, naturally, here is an opportunity to provide a fact that will be the torture of some poor single woman at a bar somewhere. Deploy wisely, men. “Fenestra” means window in latin. “De” is a neolatin prefix approximately meaning “out of”. “Tion” is a suffix meaning, approximately, “the act of.” So together, defenestration is the act of throwing (someone) out of a window. Given the etymology, I think it could be argued that one could throw themself out of a window. So I think defenestration could be an appropriate description of what is occurring in this video. I defenestrate you, I defenestrate myself. I throw you out of a window, I throw myself out of a window. 3 tall boys deep, thank you for attending my ted talk
2
u/SeamanStayns 1h ago
Suidefenestration i guess lol

u/CobyDaGrunt08 1h ago
If I were a "Suspect" for a crime I "totally did not commit" then the last thing I'd do is jump out of the window knowing that the cops already knows my face, name, and has enough info to find out where I live and who my friends are. You basically just out yourself as the Culprit and you'd get caught either way.
At least if they find out that you are guilty in the room you wouldn't get sent back to jail tired, and with a way longer sentence because the charge of running away from police was added to the list.
1
1
u/MysteriousResolve249 1h ago
That is like the worst possible way he could have I jumped out the window. He coulda at least put one foot outside than the next then drop feet first instead of nose-diving like that. Amazing he didn't get seriously injured (I think) from doing that
