One random day.....
Husband: what happened to the nightstand?????
Wife: oh that, I always thought it was ugly and gotten a replacement
Husband: .........….........
Based on real life stories where wife or husband thrown away their hidden stash furniture and had to search for it at the dumpster or rubbish chute.

A fellow I worked with had a coworker who was demolishing drywall in a house. While smashing out the ceiling a box fell out and almost him in the head. It had close to 100k in it. Turns out the house was owned by a guy who had a bakery, and I guess stashed cash up there to avoid paying taxes. He never told anyone I guess and developed Alzheimer's. The kid turned in the money to the owner, and after that they had security guards watching the demolition crew's every move.

That's crazy. He hid 90k in the ceiling to avoid taxes. That's smart your friend turned it in.

u/EconomyMongoose7994 1h ago
Amazing to just stash 80k like that and literally forget about it. I wonder what he planned to do with it
19
u/ChellyTheKid 1h ago
It's funny 70k really isn't that much money, very easy to spend it. Just like lottery winners if you don't know what you're doing it will gone before you know it.
12
u/SweetLemonPopsicle 1h ago
Yeah, I mean 60k isn't as much money as it used to be. Times have changed so much from when he first hid that.
11
u/cautioussidekick 1h ago
Yeah big rats in the roof. $50k would go a long way towards pest control
7
u/SpecsOnThe_Beach 1h ago
$40,000 wouldn't even get you a new roof

u/Icy_Skin_6352 53m ago
30k is not that much lol

u/Armadillo_Dear 49m ago
Let’s be honest in 2026 how far is 20k even gonna get you? A used 2023 Honda accord?

u/Dub_Lion 1h ago
If I had 70k stashed around like that, I'd probably use it to open my own bakery. It obviously worked out well for him.

Who the hell throws away a piece of furniture without telling their spouse?

u/Inevitable_Shift1365 3h ago
Found the guy who has never been married
15
u/meanvegton 3h ago
Surprise!!!
Do you like the new furniture that I bought???
I think you would love it when I first see it.
26
u/sora5634 2h ago
Nah, that’s just straight up stupid. Its a shared home and you do not just straight up throw away things without informing the other. Im married and its common sense to ask first.

u/2052JCDenton 36m ago
Wife tells husband, "That piece of furniture is ugly, I'm going to toss it and get a new one." Husband replies "Yeah, just don't do it yet, I need to clean it out." Two weeks later: "You cleaned that thing out yet?" "Not yet, I'm still working on other stuff." Three weeks later: "Clean that thing out because I'm going to toss it next week." "Yeah yeah I'll do it." Four weeks later: "YOU DID WHAT??!!?!?!?!"
2
u/sora5634 22m ago
Still not a reason. In this scenario i would force them to clean it out the day i would need to toss it. Gave them enough time
1
u/2052JCDenton 17m ago
Had this happen to me (though on a lesser scale). Got a deadline, agreed to the deadline, missed the deadline. Real world hurts sometimes.

u/TiredWiredAndHired 1h ago
Yeah, unless something is completely 100% mine I won't throw it away without at least asking my wife.
4
u/isolatedheathen 1h ago
Yeah I ask my wife before I toss a rusty spoon and she's going to ask me before she tosses even a random screw because we know how each other feel about these things a whole ass piece of furniture is an in-depth discussion about could it go to another room then can we use it in the garage then maybe sell it finally as a last resort I get to break it down and toss it!
4
u/General-Yinobi 1h ago
You jest, but this is the correct way, if i am going to throw a bunch of rust stuff, i collect them and put them in a box or bag or w/e, and have them take a look before we throw them away.
There is almost always some benefit that can be extracted from old stuff before throwing them away, my closer friend is a handyman, i always give them the stuff i am gonna throw to take a look at, most of the times they extract materials &/or spare parts from them.
3
u/isolatedheathen 1h ago
I promise no jest here all seriousness and yeah the reason I break down the end pieces is for the sweet sweet extraction of last valuables

You can just buy a crowbar at the crowbar store

u/Mercy--Main 2h ago edited 2h ago

u/Jezirath 2h ago
Steal the hidden safe or the furniture?
6
u/Mercy--Main 2h ago
the crobwar of course
-8
u/Jezirath 2h ago
Someone who steals a crowbar to use in their own home doesn't have good intentions. There’s a very good reason for a safe 🤡

Those bedside tables are made of some of the weakest wood in the world. Breaking into it is incredibly easy if you know whats there. This is one of thosr things where the security is just the fact its hidden. The lock is so it doesn't accidentally get knocked open. A screwdriver or a firm smack will he enough to break the hatch open.

This reminds me of the time where rent was due and I just did not have the money for it. I didn't know what happened, I budgeted and did everything right but for some reason, I was like $1000 short.
As I was packing my shit, ready for the inevitable eviction, I found like $1500 cash in my nightstand. I forgot that I had pulled out rent already and kept it somewhere "safe"

If this is real, where can I get one. Thanks in advance

u/NoNeedForAName 3h ago
It's probably homebrew, but honestly there are plenty of Bluetooth locks out there. Just find some furniture like that where you can hide one. A few screws and a drill bit and you're set. You can probably even have it unlock with your cell phone or something.

Why aren’t there keys on top when it throws it in there and then suddenly, two magnet keys when he goes to lock it?

u/torgman2 3h ago
How did tapping a plastic thingamajig secure that?

u/Electronic_Still2000 2h ago
Yeah, but the particle board is really just a facade around the steel safe. Not a particularly robust looking safe, but if it is secured to the subfloor it would take a bit of work to get into or take with them depending on the tools they brought. I wouldn’t suggest keeping a cordless angle grinder with a diamond cutoff blade next to the safe…

Or you could just, I dunno, get a safe?

u/Jezirath 3h ago
If you get a safe, everyone in the house will know.

u/Idk_wtf_cantviewcoms 3h ago
I even know how to pop most safes thanks to the interwebs. I think this is sweet. It's not Apple though is it?

u/EzriDaxCat 2h ago
They dont have to. There are many types of concealed safes and as my safe guys usually say, "the safest safes are the ones nobody knows exist".

Definitely useful when you're getting robbed too it's not like they just smash your shit - oh wait

Becomes a tomb when the batteries die, unless there's an easy way to get to them; but that defeats the purpose. Same if you lost the tag

To be fair $10k probably wouldn't fuel a Honda accord for 6 months in this economy🤔

u/youaregodslover 2h ago
Idk, I think the goons who come in tearing the place apart will probably still find it. Needs to be housed in something affixed to a wall.

Cash can be handy in places that are prone to hurricanes. If the weather knocks out the infrastructure that enables credit card processing (electricity, internet, whatever), cash might be the only way to buy supplies for a couple days.
Now, would it be good to store it in this furniture? Probably not. 😅
1
u/wearslocket 3h ago
Because when the grid goes down, the banks get hacked or the internet is shut off because the government wants to control an uprising people with cash can still get groceries and fuel the old fashioned way.

u/Jezirath 3h ago
Not exactly dirty money—just money that wasn’t declared to the government.
1
u/Musical_Xena 3h ago
I could totally imagine tipped workers having a big ole cash pile sitting around just from daily accumulation and not getting around to depositing it.
