Worth noting its not even a base 5090, its the astral. asus top tier version, the priciest one they make. she didnt buy him a graphics card, she bought him the specific one. that means she either did the homework or got very well briefed, and honestly thats the actual gift. the silicon is just the receipt.

My little sister and her now ex got me a set of headphones to play battlefield with them. We played together for months, I got bored of games and sold my laptop. I kept that set of headphones even though I have nothing to use them on. I say little sister but I'm 28, and she's 27.

Those go for more than $9k in China. I can't tell if that's mainland or Taiwan, but if it's mainland you have literally smuggle that shit into China, and it costs you more than $9k. For context you can get a byd car for less cost than one of those lol
For people that is literal unobtanium 'cus you won't have the connections to get it smuggled. This seems like a hell of a family flex lol

I won the Nvidia founder Edition raffle for The Unique opportunity to buy one of these at MSRP of 1999 at the end of last year. Now I'm struggling with the idea of why I shouldn't sell it for $9,000 but what the hell would I replace it with I have an ultra wide running 7000 by whatever resolution what the hell would I buy to drive that
→ More replies (3)3
u/Adventurous-Ease-259 7h ago
Lots of things can drive that. What software are you running? That’s going to determine what you need more than your monitor. Some bottom of the barrel stuff can drive that display if it’s all 2d

28

Generally, no they don't, especially not if you're using them. Their price increase currently is a fluke, and no long term investment in a specific GPU will pay off, not even mid term.

8
u/InterestsVaryGreatly 9h ago
No, if you use the GPU, it depreciates, if you sit on it, it may rise in the short term, but it will deplete. Just because it costs a lot now does not mean it will cost more in the future.

Cash is different than an investment, it's very explicitly not an investment to hold onto cash. Cash loses value over time due to inflation and other factors.

How much do think $9,000 invested in AAPL would be worth in 10 years?
More likely a lot higher than a 5090.
9
u/VinnieMcVince 9h ago
I understand your point, but I bought my whole PC, including a 5090, several years ago for $4300. It's wild (and unsustainable) how much ram and graphics cards have shot up. Can't wait for that bubble to burst.

This is sweet. Assuming it's from his bride, she knows his interests and got him something that's really special for him on their big day.

Yeah it's always been bad but lately the amount of complaining, bitching, and buzzkilling feels even more extreme. Usually I can predict what sort of comments people will leave but lately I actually find myself surprised at what people manage to be miserable about.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Quick_Turnover 4h ago
Honestly it is probably because people are becoming more miserable and their commentary reflects it. We've lived through almost a decade of mudslinging political division, exhausting 24/7 outrage news, active wars in multiple countries, and what appears to be the rise of neofascism and the degradation of our social fabric thanks to capitalistic extraction of wealth by a few global elites, whose dumb fuckin faces we get to stare at every damn day because they keep opening their dumb mouths to spout some nonsense and pretend they're the second coming.
But, I agree that it's sad to see how our collective suffering is impacting our psyches. We can't enjoy a simple wholesome video anymore.

As someone married to a computer guy...some of the sweetest, most wholesome interactions he's had walk through the door are those of the computer geek couples who game together. The most recent one I can think of is a guy who had a pretty nice, but older computer and had spent all his money on upgrading his girlfriend's computer so she could game her brains out - and they came in because for his birthday, she had saved up money to upgrade his system so they could both game together at the same level. They are such a perfect pair and are now engaged.
I think that one problem a lot of relationships have these days is that people have forgotten how to play and to have fun together, to be friends. Gaming helps bridge that gap and keep the fun in the relationship, especially among neurodivergent people who struggle with neurotypical relationship interactions.
My husband isn't expressive with his words (he is autistic) but does a heck of a job keeping my computer up to snuff. Not with a 5090 but I'm not doing too badly over here lol.
All that to say that this 100% is a really sweet gesture from the bride to the groom. It's obvious that she knew exactly what would touch his heart and make him feel special. The day isn't just about them as a couple or her as a bride, it's also about celebrating each other on an individual level, and I think it's sweet. I have little doubt that she is thoroughly and deeply loved by this man and that it will be well reciprocated.
Women get the expensive rings, so I don't see what the problem is with men getting something valuable that they really desire in addition to their person 😄

Speak for yourself. My wife rules. I get 2-5 hours of game time every day. And she always gets me gaming related gifts for birthdays and Christmas. She understands it's my hobby/passion and never belittles me about it. I'm 39 and we've been together 11½ years.
18
u/Dutchie420x 8h ago
My husband and I game together! I don't understand the stigma of women "not allowing" their husbands to game. So silly to me!
5
u/Lethuul 7h ago
It’s not so much the way wife restricting you really, my wife don’t mind me gaming. But 2 kids that does sports, coaching, playing, friends it leaves maybe 2-3 hours a week for gaming tops.
Kids are the big detractor, not wives.
With that said it is totally self chosen, I’d rather spend 6 hours out in the cold coaching my daughters football team than spend that time gaming.

I am the main provider, takes good care of our kids, being present, and helps with the house chores too, and play on my free time and she dont mind coz she knows that is how I want to relax.. turns out it really helps if you are responsible in other things and not just sit home and do nothing the whole night after finishing work lol

Same. I have a very stressful job and have trouble "unplugging" at the end of the day. If I do something more passive, like reading a book or watching a show, I inevitably find my self not actually relaxing but instead puzzling over a work issue.
My fiance loves that I can de-stress with an hour or two of games before I go to sleep.
