MISC. Mosquito bite changing colours with heartbeat
Mosquitos love me, my body has started taking offence. But this is the first time I've seen a bite change colours in time to my heartbeat.

u/StepGlittering4803 1d ago
Happened to my son when he was 5, he had them all over his body and they blinked in unison. I was terrified and thought it was serious, the doctors just thought it was cool.
59
u/YoinkBanana 1d ago
Would have ben terrifying as a parent. Does he still get reactions like that or did he outgrow them?
→ More replies (1)31
u/StepGlittering4803 1d ago
He still gets big reactions but the “blinking” stopped
17
u/YoinkBanana 1d ago
Well I hope he does outgrow it. Based on my very limited reading about skeeter syndrome it can go away or ease over time and usually seems to affect kids moreso than adults (guess im just a big kid at heart 🙃
4
u/Ambitious_Address667 1d ago
Does he just wink now or what?
8
u/StepGlittering4803 1d ago
We call it that because the doctor said it looked like a traffic light rhythmically blinking red
4
u/Altruistic_Shame8979 1d ago
Neat! Aside from the absolute and reasonable terror, I mean. I bet an adult would have them blink in a wave that propagates from torso outward.

the size of the bite is whatever, some people just swell up bad from mosquito saliva. but the fact that you can literally see it pulse in sync with your heartbeat is the genuinely wild part. that's just your blood flow pushing through inflamed tissue and it's oddly mesmerizing to watch.

I've had that happen to me. I forget what the injury/bite was but yeah... pretty similar to OP. I did not need a hospital in my case. Might've been like a bee sting on my hand? I forget, but it definitely tripped me out

As a person with Skeeter Syndrome (yes it’s a real condition), this actually is smaller than my reactions. It’s alarming but some people react strongly to mosquito bites. If they also have skeeter syndrome they should just ice it.
192
u/YoinkBanana 1d ago
How long have you had the syndrome for? Did it get worse or improve over time?
I only started noticing bigger reactions to bites about a year ago..and its not every mosquito bite, just some. Never seen it pulse tho
82
u/Zeroshim 1d ago
Not who you commented to but I also have skeeter syndrome. Had it my whole life, but it definitely got worse in my teens. It’s currently managed incidentally by another medication I’m on, but before then I would religiously take allergy meds to keep reactions as minimal as possible. Still welted up like crazy though. Mosquitos also absolutely LOVED to bite me.

u/wriggettywrecked 22h ago

I was surprised the top comment was hospital because this is way smaller than what my mosquito bites are.
There were two weeks last month where I got bitten six times in all. Before that, I haven’t gotten bitten in a few months. Only the first two of the six grew a red patch up to about four inches in diameter. I got bit once last year in October, and that too also grew an equally large red patch.
I also got bit a few times the summer of last year, and I had a strange reaction then (the red patches was extremely dark red, in strange non-circular shapes, and had a very clearly defined border) but were otherwise regular sized.
My mosquito bites from when I was a kid were normal.
So, like you, I only started having an unusual reaction last year. But I feel like me having a more severe reaction simply comes from not having been bitten in a long time. Once having been bitten a few more times, the mosquito bites became normal.
I did get these stickers from Japan that when you put on the mosquito bites, they don’t itch at all and heal much faster (my cousins gave me some last summer, and the difference between mosquito bites I was able to instantly use the stickers on and the ones I wasn’t able to was massive). Of course, all of my bites that have extreme reactions still had them even with the stickers, but I don’t know if the stickers had an effect on making the “normal” ones, well, “normal.”
6
u/YoinkBanana 18h ago
Ive been bitten a lot lately. Spring here so they have been coming out to attack regularly. Will need to look into those stickers, but i really need to find a way to stop the buggers from attacking me

As another mosquito victim i can whole heartedly recommend these electrical bite away thingies. It warms up the sting, destroys the proteins causing the iritation and if you do it early enough after the bite its basically done immediately. Can take an hour or two to stop itching but usually if your are fast enough its a one and done deal.
Affect is strongly reduced if you do it a few jours after the sting.
Coming from someone that sometimes gets swellings that get deep purple or reach the size of a mans hand.

u/champagnegreenleaf 17h ago
Some of the different mosquito species can make harsher bites for me. Also it's verrrry environment dependent: hotter weather, if I scratch very soon after the bite, humidity, all these things make the reactions bigger. I have had the pulsing thing! Same after having a wasp sting this year.
→ More replies (8)3
u/EmilyAndCat 15h ago
I've had it my whole life but react worse to the mosquitoes where I live now. Apparently we have antibodies for local mosquitoes after living somewhere a long time, but other locations have mosquitoes with a different genetic makeup resulting in worsened reactions.
So if you moved this past year that may explain it

If you Skeeter Syndrome, do try electric bugbite pen. It neutralizes the mosquito sting with heat. You have to apply it soon after the bug bite though.

I think its just skeeter syndrome. I started getting bigger reactions to bites about a year ago, its the first time I've seen this though. I think its just because its sitting near a blood vessel ..but check the front page tomorrow just incase 🫠
19
u/Partridge_Pear_Tree 1d ago
Yeah I swelled up like this once and my bite area got hot. I put some neosporin on it and a bandage (not sure if that truly helped), and the next day it was much better.
If it gets noticeably worse or doesn’t improve I’d go to the doctor. Also if you’re overall concerned I’d go.
My two cents as a random redditor.

FWIW, I used to do this and eventually the neo started to worsen things. Turned out I developed an allergy to the stuff. Small things would turn into cellulitis rapidly and I could only use mupirocin to heal it. My body is a wonderland. Midlife is fun.

u/Thenosm 17h ago
Idk some mosquitoes just get you good. Cleaning the bite area, especially if it’s a very recent bite, can get rid of a good chunk of the irritant that causes the swelling and redness. If it’s already been washed with warm soap and water and it continues to get worse over a few hours (assuming they aren’t scratching it), then it’d be a cause for concern.

No it's not a tick bite. It is different and tick bites get red some time after the bite and this is not the typical presentation, dont listen to this guy (in this case, tick bites are dangerous and you should seek medical stention if you have red or black after some time after a tick bite). Cold compress will help the swelling and itching. If it starts looking worse, grows bigger, gets hot, or leaking pus then absolutely hopital time. Cellulitis is a good way to get a worse infection.

u/YoinkBanana 1d ago
I'm keeping an eye on it. The pulsing has pretty much stopped. I've had similar (non pulsing) reactions before so im not too worried. I'm assuming its skeeter syndrome but I havent been diagnosed. It started happening after some mosquito bites (not all) and only relatively recently..they love me and I guess im just developing an allergy from exposure.

I'm not saying that's what's going on here, but the ER for a mosquito bite can be a real thing. When my daughter was young, her doctor sent her to the ER for a mosquito bite, and she ended up in the hospital for several days receiving IV antibiotics.

People with mastocytosis can have reactions like that
The physical connection between a mastocytosis bump and blinking is that systemic mast cell degranulation can trigger nerve or vascular responses affecting the eyelids.
Mastocytosis is a rare disorder where an abnormal buildup of mast cells releases excessive chemical mediators like histamine into the body.
When a mastocytosis bump (a mastocytoma or a lesion of urticaria pigmentosa) is rubbed, irritated, or triggered by environmental factors, it can undergo a process called degranulation. This sudden flood of histamine and other chemicals causes local swelling and redness (known as Darier’s sign). Systemically, it can lead to acute flushing, dramatic shifts in blood pressure, and neurological or neuromuscular hyper-reactivity. This widespread nerve irritation or the localized swelling of tissues near the eye can cause twitching, spasming, or involuntary blinking.

You have Erythema secondary to the bite which can turn into Cellulitis. Advice as it is localised currently is to take a non drowsy antihistamine and ice it. Use a pen mark the border and pay attention to if the erythema spreads and see a doctor if it spreads or you become symptomatic.

My drill for a bad reaction to a bug bite:
-Ice
-Zap it with one of those piezoelectric bite-zapping tools to mitigate itching. Mine is actually called Zap-It. Pro answer is one of those plug-in wands with sealed glass tools in different shapes that glow purple when on. They’re sold for skin treatments or sex toys. That tingling sensation interferes with whatever happens to make the itch sensation. (I’m definitely not a doctor.)
-Apply the best anti-itch cream you have on hand.
-Take an antihistamine.
Good luck!

Use a heating pad or boil some water, heat a spoon, and apply it to the mosquito bite.
Apparently, heat neutralizes whatever it is that makes you itch.

Had a similar reaction to a mosquito bite. Caught me off guard, as I never had a similar reaction before. I just sprayed Benadryl on the site, and by the next day it was fading.
Haven't been bitten by a mosquito since then, so don't know if I would still have a similar reaction today.

This is a thing. This is normal. Its called a "blinking" bug bite. Pulsatile blanching. If you have a normal bug bite you can find the sweet spot to see this happen if you pull the skin taut the right amount to blanch the redness and watch it pulse.
