I had my dog for 16 years, she trusted me more than anyone else.
She never would've let me do this lmao.

I have a Shih Tzu, he’s 12, I recently nursed him to health from a very severe illness, hand fed him for months. If I tried this he would scream and cry and piss and shid

Yeah I did the same for mine after she blew up her knee chasing a squirrel. Little shit still would've tried to bite my fingers off for this.

once we have to hold him between 5 people to look at his paw

I once found an injured hawk at work and spent half of my shift hiding from my boss and googling wild bird rescues. A volunteer drove two hours to pick him up. Paid for her own gas and everything.
Wildlife rescue folk just do it for the love of the game. My hat is off to them.

I dont get to tell this story often so here goes:
My 2 roommates and I did this in college. We saved a red tailed hawk from being eaten by some vultures waiting for it to die as it was grounded due to an injured wing. Mind you it was also August.
A couple questionable decisions later we ended up throwing a towel over it and trapping it under a laundry basket for a half hour or so while we figured out our next move. Homie must've been tired AF because it (very luckily) didn't fight us at all.
Turns out there was a raptor sanctuary about 40 mins from us...we called and some giant wildlife rescue guy showed up, inspected the bird for wing damage by turning it upside down held by the ankles. Sprained wing. And that was that.

The towel + laundry basket combo is what I’ve been recommended the few times I’ve found injured raptors! Kudos for the idea

Reading this half asleep on my phone, due to how the words lined up, I read:
I once found half an injured hawk
and I was just a bit concerned to say the least.

You're amazing. Not only are you a volunteer, but animals are so lucky to have someone as caring as you taking care of them

Google traductor
As a Latino, I do it all the time—it’s just a matter of copying and pasting.
Besides, I thought I was in a Spanish-language subreddit; the app translates everything into my own language, and in some subreddits, it even translates what I write for the rest of the world to see (though apparently not in this one).
My apologies, I suppose.

Genuinely, do animals understand if a human is trying to help them? Does domestication matter? Would a pet dog be more trusting than a coyote in this type of situation?

u/KoolaidKoll123 22h ago
Animals are so individualistic in their personalities, just like people. And just like people, their trust arpund humans is shaped by experiences in their younger years.
A raccoon that had scraps thrown to it once in a while and got to eat cat food with the strays is going to be much more trusting than the raccoon who's whole family was run over by a car and then smacked at with sticks or had rocks thrown at it. Animals are way more complex than we give them credit for.

I used to have a Huskie that, for whatever reason, all other animals were terrified of. I saw some massive dogs bark at her, she'd just turn and stare at them, and they'd hit the ground and back away from her. When I walked her the neighborhood was silent. Walk my other 2 Huskies, dogs barking at us everywhere.
That same dog though, any person could just take food out of her mouth and she wouldn't so much as change her body language. In 15 years, she never showed the slightest aggression to any person, but she'd about yank your arm out of the socket trying to get to a deer if she saw one.

I just got a dog from the shelter two weeks ago. On one of his first walks he got a bit too close to a cactus. He came back to me, sat down at my feet, and pawed his face once. I removed the sticker, he licked my hand once, and then turned around to continue the walk.

He definitely understands it's bothering him but this one in particular seems ready to chew it off rather than receive the help. He's pretty young.
They usually get it though, some just take a little longer to figure it out.

Generally, dogs are incredibly anxious about their paws, so I have to believe that this couple has an intimate relationship

u/Hamchalupasupreme 19h ago
Yes. When I first adopted my dog and he’d get tangled in his leash he’d try to bite me for trying to help him out.
Now, he’ll just stand still

u/Long_Reindeer3702 17h ago
My dog will sit still when we put ice packs on his injuries and comes to us whenever he's hurt or needs his ears cleaned. He's so smart and communicates so well. We got lucky; he's just a mutt that's part lab part pitbull part who knows what. He's almost 12 years old and now that he's taking his arthritis meds, he's like a puppy again (although he doesn't play as hard or as long thank goodness.)
Domestication matters, temperament matters.

How is that even a question? YES OF COURSE a pet dog would be more trusting than a wild animal.

Unrelated to the sweet dog and awesome gas station worker
but the colors of red he’s wearing and the paint and/or plastic advertisement behind him are almost identical. So much so that even the camera was “like uhhhh okay where should I focus “🤣

Love how he shows the splinter to the dog after removing it. That's rule #1 of splinter removal.
