Just their spawn point.
In all seriousness, the only thing I can think of is, they always wear nice uniforms, and they have to crawl to a bed when they're up there. It's comical in a way.
86
u/L00seSuggestion 1d ago
Do they have to sleep in their uniforms?
166
u/stormostorm 1d ago
No, we take off our uniforms, there are usually hangers hung off every ledge.

u/-sharkysharky 1d ago
How do you take them off without a dedicated space? Like obviously you can't use the airplane lavatory.
Also why is it called a lavatory and not a bathroom? I just realized that
→ More replies (2)122
u/stormostorm 1d ago
Now the lavatory I don't know, but looked up. Used to be chemical toilets, and it's just a phrase that was passed down.
We change in the small standing room that you see, then when we draw the curtain to the bunk we call down and invite the next person up. Every bunk has a phone and ever phone has a 2 digit number. I'm a pilot so it's easier but we remember almost all phone stations on the aircraft.
63
u/beepbeepboop74656 23h ago
Do your pilot pajamas have pilot epaulets?
78
u/stormostorm 23h ago
Well of course. In the event we don't have clothes every pilot must have their rank tattooed on their shoulders.
24
18
u/soowhatchathink 21h ago
In your professional opinion as a pilot is there likely a good amount of fucking that happens there
7
7
u/NerpyDerps 1d ago
I doubt they would for a quick nap, but it doesn't look like much room to change up there. I would assume they do if there's shifts.

We had the same thing on the 777. You go up the stairs and take a left. Two rows, probably 7 or so on each side with a small crawl space in the middle. Have a curtain for privacy, but you would sleep above the economy class passengers. You could sometimes hear babies crying below you, so you would use ear buds most of the time. No lavatory, so if you had to pee, have to walk back down the hallway, out the door and wait in line.
→ More replies (5)35
u/sm00thArsenal 1d ago
7 on each side?? How many crew members are there that 14 could be on a break at the same time? I already thought 6 in this video was unlikely.
36
u/Pilotrob23 1d ago
It has been a decade since I have flown it, it is a different world of flying. The flight attendants or cabin crew, had much shorter resting times. Depending on a 777-200 or a 300, or ER, etc, we would have I believe 4 pilots, and 16 cabin crew on the long flight. I’d like to say 7 a side, maybe 6. Last two on the left and right were the pilots, the rest were for cabin crew. Depending on your airlines configuration I’m sure Boeing fits each one differently.

I am an engineer who works on commercial aircraft - the number of bunks (beds) depends on what the operator chose at the time of delivery. For some aircraft there are two (one by the flight deck for flight crew and one in the back for flight attendants).
I am not sure what the 787 has, but I once saw a 777 with ten bunks in the back for flight attendants and two in the front for pilots.

Looks cozy as hell.
I was a roadie for a few years spending a lot of time on a tour bus. The bunks were small but when I’d shut that curtain I was out.
181
u/SecureWolverine6711 1d ago
Love tour bus sleep, it’s like unlocking a different level especially when the bus is on the move, and a few people are still awake chatting a bit. Something about that engine chug, combined with low voices, just absolutely puts me down.

u/winniebrie 1d ago
Yesss me too the engine rumble would put me right out. Then Id wake up as soon as we parked and lie there with my eyes closed wishing the engine was still on

I worked on boats…the diesel engine, the rocking of the waves, the cozy dark bunk that I had lined with feather comforters and pillows. And knowing that my crew mates were taking turns on watch keeping us safe…been chasing that level of comfort ever since.

Tour bus sleep is the reason that I can now fall asleep on planes (and in cars to a lesser extent). Tour bus overnights just rewired my inability to sleep on a vehicle. The chug of the engine, the gentle rocking of the bus, and yes, voices and sometimes some jamming... zzzzz

Mythbusters episode 198 - “Deadliest catch” showed that eyes closed rest was still really beneficial.
“Kari and Tory went onto an anchored ship and set up an obstacle course featuring tasks that a Bering Sea crab boat deckhand could expect to face, including throwing a hook, sorting crab, dodging mock versions of crab pots, answering navigation questions, and a steady hand test with a total 100 possible points. Kari and Tory both got perfect scores for their (fully rested) control and then ran two tests after 30 hours awake, with the difference being that the second included the 20-minute crab naps. Without the crab naps, Kari scored 27 and Tory scored 34, but after adding in the naps, Kari and Tory successfully doubled their scores in the re-test (and then some) with scores of 64 and 81.”

Honest question, how much fucking is going on up there?
551
u/mtb443 1d ago edited 1d ago
Dated a flight attendant and we were frequently on these flights while she was working. The answer is not nearly as much as you would think.
The fact you are working and taking breaks at the same time as others. You actually want to sleep. Plus there are cameras going in and out and HR will instant fire you if you do fuck up there. Planes are gross, small spaces. All the things make this not as fun as you want it to be.
46

u/derek_32999 1d ago
Right it's like saying healthcare workers fuck just cause there are beds all around the hospital. I mean I'm sure it happens, but sleeping at night would be more common
92
u/lewd_robot 1d ago
Anecdotally, I've dated a few nurses and they all made it sound like there was absolutely tons of hooking up going on in hospitals. High stress, long hours, on your feet a lot, and hospital work is supposedly a magnet for people with ADHD and other impulse-control disorders that couldn't stand sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day.
22
19
u/Cam27022 1d ago
Never been like that anywhere I’ve ever worked. We are all just fucking tired and want to leave.
10
u/Marky_Markus 21h ago
Yeah as a nurse myself I hear this stereotype all of the time and in my 10 years have never seen or heard of it happening even once. People do be hooking up but in their free time. Nobody knows how disgusting a hospital is better than a healthcare worker so why would we want to be fucking in this nasty ass place lol

57
u/Impressive_Recon 1d ago
Yeah as a nurse it’s definitely not true. First of all, working 12-hour back-to-back shifts is exhausting. Then you get shit, vomit, and blood spewed on you every day. No one is in the mood to fuck after dealing with psych patients all day

Also climbing into the bunk is a whole process, getting out is another process and there’s equipment in the bunk with you like oxygen tanks, fire extinguishers and other stuff. They’re literally only good for lying flat for a couple hours

Well, flight crew aren’t teenagers. These are lucrative careers taken very seriously, not “fuck it” jobs like McDonald’s. No one’s going to risk trying to screw at work, especially when they know there’s a 99% chance they’re going to get caught. It really doesn’t happen. I’ve never heard of anyone claiming it happened, and if I did, I wouldn’t believe them.

Pro-tip: most flight attendants actually take their job pretty seriously when they’re at work.
Also, most of us are women - we’re not like the disgusting moids that loiter on this site and are obsessed with sex.
We’re there to do our jobs, and if we get crew rest, we want to chill. On long flights, particularly overnight flights, we actually sleep and need to.

And, at least in Afrikaans, that is what the direct translation would be. Though I know "kot" is more like bed (or a place to sleep) in Dutch, it's still weird as "poep" means fart or shit but definitely not fucking. Anyone able to shed some light?

Honest answer: Zero, because it's a workplace, another coworker would surely complain, and you'd have to answer to HR.
Also, the folks are up there need to get what little sleep they can before they have to wake up for their next shift, and you don't want to be fatigued while trying to fly an aircraft.

Was it the engineers that decided the plane needed space for the attendants, OSHA, or the unions that lobbied for better conditions?
87

Probably a bunch of federal and private organizations that collectively decided that they shouldn't have sleep deprived people in charge of a plane full of people.
Definitely not the engineers though, they're normally the lowest on the decision making tree.

u/94746382926 1d ago
I know this is a bit tongue in cheek, but this isn't the case if it has the same type of airflow as the main cabin during flight. The entire volume of air recirculates through HEPA filters 20 times an hour or every 2 to 3 minutes.
It's way cleaner than any other environment most people will find themselves in, comparable to an operating room which is pretty cool.

The 787 Dreamliner might have 2-4 pilots and 7-10 flight attendants on very long flights. This video shows six beds. Flight time might be 10-18+ hours.
Presumably there are private bathrooms for crew as well.
70
u/colonelcasey22 1d ago
Pretty sure the crew uses the same lavs as ordinary passengers.
40
u/__rachelmaria 1d ago
Former FA (US based) who flew on a 787 (and slept in those bunks)! You’re correct, we used the same bathrooms as passengers, there’s hardly any room to stand up in the bunks but they were comfortable enough. I saw the top comment ask about how much fucking was going on in those… I never experienced that, but I think some FAs would “relieve” themselves in there. Colleagues have posted photos of questionable stains on blankets left behind. 🤮 And can also confirm m5m3man is correct, pilots have separate bunks closer to the front of the plane!
7
u/Easy7777 1d ago
They would rub one out in their bunk ?
12
u/__rachelmaria 1d ago
YUP. And if you were the unlucky one that chose the bunk after them…. Yeahh. 💀 Since there always has to be crew available, there’s typically 2-3 rest breaks on those overnight flights, meaning different groups go at different times for about 2ish hours each. People are nasty.
