Sophomore Internship Advice

Hello everyone, I've been applying, applying, applying to any IE related internships for the past month (Supply Chain mostly, but also Quality + Manufacturing Engineering) and was wondering what's a good point numbers-wise to be at.

I've cold applied to over 200+ through Handshake + LinkedIn and want to keep going, but was told by some friends that it's starting to be a waste of time without any referrals/connections cold applying. On the other side, some other friends have told me that it's good and to just keep applying, applying, and applying. I've gotten a few interviews so far so I feel fairly happy but wondering if I should start trying to connect and message people on LinkedIn for example instead of just spamming applications.

Anyone work in Finance?

What are the best ways to break into a finance role? I have a BS in Supply Chain Management and an MS in Industrial Engineering. I've worked as a supply chain coordinator for a while. My next "logical" move would be to find a supply planner or like assistant demand planner role, but it really doesn't interest me.

I've always been interested in finance, but I don't know what a good transitional job would be. I know there's overlap between supply chain and finance, like cost accounting, but being an accountant doesn't sound appealing to me either.

I would prefer to build and work with financial models, but I'm not sure my resume screams that I'm ready for that type of role.

Any thoughts or advice?

RE alternatives for MiniTab

I'm an engineering student working on some quality control and data analysis projects. I really need software with Minitab-like features (such as SPC control charts, process capability analysis, ANOVA, and hypothesis testing), but I can't afford a paid Minitab license, and my college unfortunately doesn't provide student access.

Are there any reverse-engineered tools that replicate Minitab's point-and-click statistical workflow?

RE clone of MiniTab

I'm an engineering student working on some quality control and data analysis projects. I really need software with Minitab-like features (such as SPC control charts, process capability analysis, ANOVA, and hypothesis testing), but I can't afford a paid Minitab license, and my college unfortunately doesn't provide student access.

Are there any free, web-based, or open-source software packages (or reverse-engineered tools) that replicate Minitab's point-and-click statistical workflow? I'm looking for a GUI-based option that I can use right away for project work without having to write everything in Python or R from scratch. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Quality assurance vs quality control in practice, where do your defects start

On paper the split is clean. One is about improving the process so defects do not happen and the other is about catching them through inspection and test. In real workflows the line blurs.

Most of what I have seen comes from gaps earlier in the lifecycle rather than a failed test. Inconsistent change tracking and disconnected data and decisions made outside the formal system. By the time inspection catches it the fix is expensive. Do you separate the two or run them as one system?

Looking at IE masters as a current EE

Long story short my job (which I got with an EE bachelors) requires me to get a masters after a year of work (which job will help pay for yippee) and it’s pretty broad as to what I can pick to study (anything STEM pretty much). I’m thinking of straying from another EE degree and was thinking of doing an engineering management or industrial engineering degree as a way to expand my horizons and future job opportunities/possibilities. Definitely leaning toward IE as it feels slightly more quantitative of the two, but just wanted to ask some people’s perspectives. I’d be looking at schools around Boston or NY.

Thanks :)

Does prestige of school matter for masters in IE?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently doing my BS in Industrial Engineering at a large state school (~top 50) and am on track to graduate in 3 years. I have the option to do a 3+1 program and get my master's here in just one additional year.

Cost isn't a huge factor since I've been fortunate enough to have scholarships, so I'm wondering if it's worth applying to more prestigious/"top" IE programs, even if that means spending 2 years on a master's instead of 1. Would the difference in connections, recruiting opportunities, and career prospects actually be worth it? Plenty of smart people at my school, but also have the feeling that my peers aren't "motivating/challenging" me as much as I'd want to or have similar career aspirations.

As a side note, I have mixed feelings about some things at my current school and know have friends at other schools I'm considering. Neither is a deal breaker, but it's something I'm thinking about.

I'm not in a huge rush to graduate, but some of the positions I'm interested in eventually require both a master's and work experience. I'm trying to figure out whether it's better to get the master's done sooner and get some work experience under my belt earlier, or spend an extra year at a potentially better-connected school.

Would appreciate any advice, especially from people working in IE or who have gone through a similar decision!

Switching from web development to industrial automation because of AI?

I’m currently working as a web developer, but I’m noticing that AI is taking over more and more of my work. I barely write code myself anymore. It’s becoming mostly about writing specs, architecture design and talking to clients.
The problem is that I don’t really enjoy the client communication side of things, and my people skills aren’t the best either.

So I’ve been thinking about switching to electrical engineering / industrial automation, maybe becoming a PLC engineer. I like the idea of still doing some programming and designing, but also working hands-on with installations, testing and troubleshooting.
My main concern is whether AI will eventually take over most of the programming and engineering work in this field too.
For those working in industrial automation, how much is AI already changing your job?

What’s a day like for industrial engineering?

Hi everyone! I’m a college student in Texas, US who trying to decide whether to pursue industrial engineering, and I’d love to hear from people who are already working in the field.
I’m curious about what industrial engineering is really like beyond what we learn in school. If you’re an industrial engineer, could you share a little about your experience?
What field can you work as an industrial engineer?
What does a typical workday look like for you? What tasks do you spend most of your time doing?
How are your working hours, stress levels, and workload?
Do you feel your pay and opportunities are worth the time and effort you put into this career?
Would you still choose industrial engineering if you could go back to college? Why or why not?

I’d especially appreciate honest answers, including the downsides.Thank you to everyone who takes the time to share your experience! I really appreciate it.

Quality engineers and inspectors, is the NCR to CAPA process in real plants anything like what we study?

Hi everyone, industrial engineering student here, trying to figure out whether what we learn about quality management matches the real world.

We study the NCR to CAPA loop, supplier qualification, SPC, and being ready for an audit at any time. But every quality engineer or inspector I have talked to says real life is NCRs sitting open because nobody owns the next step, supplier certificates arriving as scanned PDFs that do not match the PO, and the two weeks before an audit spent rebuilding evidence that already exists somewhere in a shared folder.

So I am trying to understand where the time actually goes in a typical week on the quality side.

What is the routine task that is mostly chasing people and paper? NCR follow up, collecting supplier documents, calibration records, first article packages, customer complaint responses, audit prep? What takes far more manual effort than it should, and what workaround did someone build to survive it? And what is the headache management or the auditor never seems to understand?

Any perspective from quality engineers, inspectors, or people on the floor would help a lot. Thanks.

Burnt out

I don’t know if this belongs here but I need to get it off my chest. I’m in my fourth year (out of five) of studying ISE, and I feel SO burnt out. I just feel like I have an assignment after assignment, all semester midterm (finished 6, have 1 left) even though i’m only taking 5 courses. Like i’m contemplating whether or not its gonna get better, or if the job is even better than all of this. I guess what I’m really asking if it is worth in the end ?

Major in psychology want to do a master in IE

So as the title says, I have a bsc inpsychology now realize maybe I choose wrong and I’m not that interested in humanities, I was thinking of doing a master in IE I’m 26 and that looks like a way better option than doing a full 5 years bsc.

But how do you see the job market for a master in IE I don’t necessarily have one job market decided, since I can pivot to finance, computer science, logistics etc or even start my own company.

But what’s the consensus on a master in IE I’m not from the USA but your advice will probably apply to my country as well.
