Learning mohawks with poor external hip rotation

I've just started trying mohawks fresh out of Adult 6 and am really struggling with turning my hips and feet out. Most of the tutorials I've seen online really focus on the turnout but my ability to do so is pretty limited. With gently bent knees and some straining I can get to roughly 90 degrees, maybe a bit more if I deepen my knee bend, but in order to make it look like the videos I start hitting the high squat range. Are there any particular mohawk techniques or exercises that have helped anyone with similar issues?

Tips for heel lift?

I’ve been skating for quite some time now and still deal with some heel lift. It’s not anything major, but I’d like there to be ideally none. At the moment, I try to tie my boots super tight, especially at the ankle. I can’t tie my laces tightly over my arch, otherwise I get a lot of arch pain. I’m also thinking about getting insoles since I still have some pain from that. To be clear, I’m pretty certain my skates aren’t too big a size for me. My toes have just enough room to wiggle, but they’re never sliding around. The thing is, my balls of my feet and toes are wide, but my ankle is skinny. I wear Jackson Mystiques.

Would getting inserts for my flat feet help? Should I tie my laces even more tightly with a lace puller instead of my fingers? Or is there something else I can use to stop my heel from lifting?

Advice on getting kitted out!

I've been skating since january and have been making do with just the soakers I got with my beginner skates at the time. I haven't been able to afford proper clothes, bag for my skates or hard guards but, with my birthday coming up, I'd like to finally get these bits together

I am currently skating in ordinary but practicalish clothes like stretchy tights but I would like to get some proper athletic leggings or similar. Are there any good brands or important things to know? I'd also like a proper jumper/fleece to wear

So far I have been making do with an ordinary bag with my skates in a smaller bag inside but I want a proper bag to keep them safe. I have to travel a couple hours to skate every week so practicality and storage space are quite important to me

Finally, I know I need some proper guards.

Is there anything I should know before these purchases? Or any particularly good brands/places to shop? (UK based)

Thank you!!

Jackson Freestyle

Recently upgraded from Mystique to Freestyle and it was... interesting to say the least (I'm working on my pre-bronze). Not sure if this is common for breaking in new skates or did I waste money 😢

  1. Freestyle felt comfortable when I sat down. However on ice, I felt a gap between the arch of my foot and the insoles, despite having Superfeet insoles to support the arch.

  2. The rocker position is much inwards. I bought the Mystique at size 7 and 10' blade which felt great in the beginning. But from the second month, I had to use toe inserts (still felt good). I do have a tendency to lean forward already and am working on it. Now I'm in Freestyle 5 wide, 9' blade which fits me better, but the rocker position is so awkward I can barely turn.

  3. The temporary mount. The skate tech isn't very attentive, I had to ask to have it baked and adjusted. I plan to go to another Proshop but meanwhile, I'm not sure how to adjust? My right side is weaker and I pronate inward, but I felt like it's a strength issue and my skates shouldn't be adjusted based on that?

Kinda worried about buying the wrong skates. Advice appreciated!

Help with one foot constantly dropping into inside edge

TLDR: Can't hold right outside edge due to weaking right foot/leg with a tendency for right inner thigh and knee to cave inwards. Looking for drills and exercises to strengthen skating on right foot.

I've been going for adult skating classes (in my 30s) for about 5 months, and I've been consistently having issues when skating on my right leg.

Skating on my left is great - stable, strong, and I can generally stay on my edges. However, when it comes to skating on my right foot, I often can't hold a one-foot glide reliably as it often feels like I'm not gripping onto the ice enough. Whenever there's a need to go onto my right outside edge for fw crossovers or fw three-turns, I tend to drop back into my right inside edge, my right inner thigh and knee also seem to have a tendency to cave inwards.

When I'm doing half swizzle pumps down the rink, I think I do a pretty good job when I'm skating on my left leg, and pumping with my right. But it feels almost impossible to do the same thing when I flip it around.

One reason could be undertraining on my right since it is the weaker side, and I would subconsciously prefer to skate on the more reliable left-side. I also did suffer a small injury a few months ago (suspected slight tear in the right meniscus) which is even more of a reason why I haven't been training on my right as much as I should.

I have brought my skates to a smaller skate shop; they've checked the alignment of my skates and said it was fine. I'm not sure if it's a pronation issue, and I don't discount the possibility.

Question: Are there any drills or exercises (either on-ice or off-ice) that I can do to strengthen skating on my right foot?

Should I Get My Skates Resharpened?

I'm a complete beginner.

I had my skates sharpened at Paragon Sports NYC 2 days ago, and I noticed that the outer edge of the blade on my right hockey skate still has a very thin flat line, similar to how it looked from the factory. The inner edge appears to be sharpened, with a sharp angle.

Should I take them back to get them sharpened again, or is this acceptable? I'm not sure if they'll charge me extra, and I don't know how to tell whether the sharpening was done properly.

learning to skate- 2 foot glide and how to push?

helloooo! i’m learning how to ice skate with goals of future figure skating, i’ve only been a couple times now but have got new skates and am ready to take it on, im struggling a bit since i don’t know/am too scared to do a 2 foot glide, ive tried it off the wall multiple times but my right foot tends to not glide while my left can do it very dominantly, i know my left foot is my dominant too and it’s also really hard to move my right forwards. any advice on this? also i feel like my pushes are pretty nonexistent, i DO bend my knees but im still just walking instead of gliding and skating and it’s really bumming me out, any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

(one last thing i major foot pain when i skate, my new skates are pretty broken in but it’s been like that everytime to the point of like me literally wanting to cry, the skates fit perfectly too, any tips on how to help it/avoid it?)

thanks in advance!!!

Skate recommendations

I was lurking around this sub because I recently got into wizard skating on rollerblades and am currently getting into the hockey season. Ive started trying things out at adult skates with my hockey skates like the 3 turn I think its called? I realized I might actuslly be ready to learn axels but hockey skates might not be ideal.

I am going to start with edge jumps because no toe pick but ive been seeing something called freestyle skates in this sub. I consider myself an advanced skater and I have about 35 years experience skating on and off the ice. Are these worth getting? Im not sure i want a figure skate because at this point I think it would feel very foreign to me.

Long story short

should I get freestyle skates to fuck around in or should I stick with my hockey skates. Ide rather not have a toe pick because i fear i will kill myself getting used to it lol.

Need fit advice for new skates.

Yesterday I bought my first set of skates ever. I went for the Bauer Colorado.
In the store they seemed to fit, although it was "snug" the guy said its fine and apparently it should be. I measured my foot and came in at 285mm which is skate size 10 (EU 45.5). As I went skating my toes started to hurt, and they still somewhat do, I wore thin sports socks. Now even tho in theory they should fit, I don't think they do, or is this somewhat normal and I/my feet just have to adjust?

Realistically, is it too late?

I'm 18 and I am a very beginner ice skater. Although I've been in lessons on and off for a year, I still feel like it's too late for me to actually start and hope to get to a decent level such as axels. I have never done sports in my life and so I'm not very athletic or flexible.
