Guns still going at K-town (10/18)

Guns kept blasting all night! Work piles are stacking up in a few key areas on Superstar, and along Great Northern around the North Ridge.

Top of the mountain is expected to stay under 40° for most of the next week, so a majority of the work piles should stick around. I imagine snowmaking will likely continue to add to their piles overnight when temps allow.

Snowmaking is online at the top of the mountain, and a little bit of natural snow is in the forecast.

Looking for ski people

Hey I’m looking for people to ski with this winter. I don’t mind soloing ski trips but would be nice to find a group to go with every now and then. I usually go back and forth between Stowe and Mt Snow but every now and then I’ll go check out another mountain in Vermont or Maine.

Got tired of juggling 6 tabs every Friday to pick where to ski in Vermont, so I built TenFlakes.

Hey r/icecoast,

Like a lot of you, every winter weekend my routine was the same: bouncing between Google Maps, NWS forecasts, resort snow reports, and pass blackout calendars trying to figure out where to drive Saturday morning.

Over the off-season, I put together TenFlakes — a free, clean tool designed specifically for planning Vermont ski trips.

What it does right now:

  • Ranks all 16 Vermont mountains side-by-side using drive times from your exact town/zip, your skiing style (groomers, steeps, powder, beginner/family), and incoming weather.
  • "Mild weather & low wind" filter: Flipped on for days when you or your crew want to avoid 0°F summit wind-holds or frostbite.
  • Weekend Pass Blackout Checker: Quick tool for Epic Local, Ikon Base, and Indy to check if this coming weekend has restrictions at specific mountains.
  • Local Travel & Warning Notes: Reminders for the Route 108 Smugglers' Notch winter closure, Stowe weekend paid parking, and Mad River Glen's snowboard ban.
  • SnoCountry & NWS Integration: Live reported trails/lifts (when resorts start reporting) alongside NWS forecasts.
  • Side-by-side mountain comparisons & ski guides (e.g., Stowe vs. Killington, Best for Families, etc.).

It’s currently in off-season planning mode showing estimated opening dates until lifts spin.

I’m a local skier building this for the community. No paywalls, no pop-ups. I’d genuinely appreciate it if you could test it from your hometown, check your mountain's ranking, and tell me:

  1. Does the ranking make sense for your ski style and drive?
  2. What features or local mountain intel am I missing?
  3. What bugs or UI quirks did you run into?

Thanks for checking it out, and pray for snow! ❄️

Top sheet ski repair

Hi - don’t have enough karma to post in r/skiing - we only ski the icecoast anyways - hope someone can help.

Skis are volkl secret 96 where there is a metal top sheet together with the plastic/nylon sheet. At the junction, there has been an impact where the metal separates from the plastic. Oddly this is the second volkl ski - also experienced on the older secret 92. On that ski we took it to ski shop and they used epoxy and clamps to get the metal back in place. Lasted 1-2 days. We did diy repair and ground off the metal layering JB Weld on the exposed area. The 92’s are now rock skis and the 96 were purchased to replace but we’re back at the same damage - something with the way my wife skiing on inside edge.

Question here - is the grind off and replace with epoxy layers suitable? It was an ugly repair.

Is there something better suited than JB to help close up the gap?

Which VT mountain?

Every year we take our two exchange students (different 2 kids each year) to Vermont for a ski trip. The past 3 years we’ve gone to Bolton Valley because we had a novice skier with us and needed something on the smaller side. But this year one of our kids is from Northern Italy where he’s a ski instructor in the Alps, and the other is from Sweden and also has extensive experience. Which mountain would be best for these guys? We will be staying in Burlington so preferably not too far away from there.

For my NYC riders

Hey all,

This is mainly for NYC boarders and skiers. I am looking into opening up a storefront in NYC, Brooklyn to be exact, that will also act as a location that host events mainly aimed at people who want to be apart of the NYC riding community. The location would act as a traditional board shop that would be equipped with brands that most are familiar with, and some specialty brands. But the concept is more tailored around being a space that can also be equipped for hosting events, and to allow riders to come together and meet one another during tailored events. Bi weekly to monthly would be the starting point for events. I would also partner with youth organizations as a big focus of the project would be to keep pushing the sport forward, by allowing outdoor access to youth with getting them equipped with organizations, gear, and transportation to the mountains.

My main question is: If you are a rider in the city, would you find this to be something you'd be interested in? Do you feel as if you'd like to connect with more people to ride on the mountains with, and would you think curated events at a local board shop would help you do so?

Thank you!

Vermont Lodging Expensive - Ski Destination

I noticed the premium lodging at Vermont ski resorts are extremely overpriced. Nice ski-in ski-out hotels go for couple thousand a night and decent hotels outside of the resort will still cost you in the high hundreds per night.

I get Vermont has some nice ski resorts but let’s be serious it doesn’t compare to the skiing out west or Europe. The resorts out west are expensive but at least you’re getting what you pay for for the most part. In Europe you can stay at a 4 star hotel ski in ski out for around 200-300 usd per night and the skiing and atmosphere is 10x better than Vermont.

So my question is for people who take ski destination trips to Vermont and stay in pricey hotels/airbnbs, what justifies it?

Any point in changing up what I have or just keep it?

Last year I took my oldest daughter out for her first real season skiing. We had gone twice when she was younger and done two lessons. Both times the instructors we absolutely awesome, so shout out to those of you who instruct in New England. Last year was the first time we went with no lessons, used the big lifts and skied full runs on green trails and were out all day. She had a blast and it's something we're looking forward to again this year.

Before we got started last season, I priced out used skis locally for myself at a few stores. But for the price of some pretty beat up sticks I was able to grab some Nordica Enforcers on clearance for sub $300. They're the 108 width.

I realize now they're probably way too big for me. I did some research and kinda landed on wider(er) being sorta the new norm since I'd last bought skis, but not enough research to realize the 108 was probably way overkill for me.

I had no real issues with them other than kinda feeling like an idiot in the lift line.

Does it make sense to just keep them and run them anyway? Is that width a real disadvantage? Realistically I'll be skiing at a kids pace for the entirety of this season. None of my friends ski or ride so I don't have anyone to do any kind of all mountain with. I could swing another clearance/ discount pair in the 350-500$ range but also, not spending the money would be good too.

Big and tall guy looking for bib snow pants - advice?

Morning ice coasters!

I’m a 300lb, 6’6” dude in need of a solid snow pant investment.

I’m used to buying cheap pants that at least have a leg vent, and at least wide enough to fit me in, if not long enough too xD

But I keep wearing through them quickly since I’m getting at least 30 days a season and/or they quickly begin not holding out water.

Plus since Im tall and don’t have a matching, zippered pant-jacket combo, I’m ultimately getting snow up a wet ass crack (sorry for the visual) all the time.

It makes it temping to find a matching combo, but my “jacket” is always changing anyway (winter coat, vest, jersey, sweater, combination of them all), so in the end… I need a waterproof bib, ideally one that has…
a) leg vents
b) belt loops … enables stuff to hang off a belt and not rely on the loop itself (snowskate leash, beer holder, etc)
c) room to move/stretch/fat-ass adaptation
d) chest/bib pocket

Anyone have experience similar to mine, and advice on a product?

My wife was finding some XXXL Burton bibs I found tempting but worried a little about the length since I don’t see any as clearly-marked Tall.

Issue #2 of the Lift Ticket Rundown is now live. There’s info on all kinds of lesser known deals and specials at places like Ski Butternut, Cranmore, Jiminy Peak plus some of the big players like Loon, Killington, and more. For those with kids in grade school, there’s details on how some of them can ski for practically free all season in NH, VT, and even UT, and CO.
