Dont even read it. Leave it as unread. "I didn't see my phone"

Nah, thats just showing you are afraid of telling them no. Respond, "I have plans and cannot make an unscheduled shift".

I mean the "boss" here isn't exactly being direct. I'd respond the same way.

But the answer isn’t direct. It doesn’t say “no”. It says good luck. But the meaning is clear.

Let’s see how long you keep your job then lol

Same boss would probably give you flack about being on your phone during work hours, but expect you to respond immediately to their message when you’re not on shift

“I’m out of town”

“I’m 6 beers in”

I disagree. I don't need to be on my phone all the time and I also don't owe anyone a response even if I read their message.

For anyone that doesn't know, on iphone you can click the name at the top of the message and turn off "send read receipts" on a per individual basis. So you can have read receipts on for your family, but off for your boss an such.

If my boss texts me, I will not answer for at least 25 minutes.  She has been conditioned for this.

If it's an emergency, call.

The magic words...

I'd love to help BUT...

  • I have plans tonight with my family/wife that we made a while back.

  • I have a test tomorrow morning that I have to study for...  I have a paper due...

Any thing along the lines that you already have a life that has priorities that supercede your job.

Any boss that pushes after that ... Find a new job.

I mean, no one should have to come up with fake excuses to say no to getting called in to work on your day off. People should be able to just say "no, it's my day off". But if you work in a country with at will employment, telling your boss comforting lies is often the best move

Really just need one magic word. “No.”

You aren’t scheduled, not your problem.

A little courtesy goes a long way with people you see on a near-daily basis. If you don’t give them the time of day why should they give it to you?

"oh darn, if you would have caught me earlier I would have but I'm drunk"

I like that one too!

No is a complete sentence

I'd love to help but not as much as I'd love not to.

Should really have a word with whoever wrote the schedule.
