💬 Discussion Isn't using Google or Alexa defeating the purpose?

I'm on the verge of switching to HA after a long time of procrastinating, but I'm confused about this. I know about the assistant option, but I keep reading articles about integration with Google or Alexa, and I just don't see the point of using HA if you need to rely on the Internet always being available as well as the obvious privacy issues.

It's possible that I'm missing something, so I'm hoping someone can clear this up for me. Thank you.

💬 Discussion Using AI to monitor their house instead of just building dashboards

TL;DR: Building an AI-powered home monitoring system that analyzes historical Home Assistant data, identifies potential equipment problems, investigates causes, and reduces unnecessary alerts. This is less about controlling my home with AI and more about using AI to understand how my home is actually operating.

Apologies on the length of this post…

I've been messing around with something for a while now and was curious if anyone else is doing anything similar.

I see a ton of really impressive Home Assistant dashboards, but I've been wondering why more people aren't using AI to actually analyze all the data we're collecting.

I've been building my own system that pulls information from HA along with a bunch of other sources. Electrical usage, HVAC, temperatures, septic, well, vehicles, appliances, etc.

Instead of just setting thresholds and getting alerts when something happens, I've been using AI to look through historical data, establish baselines, compare how things are operating, and try to identify issues I might not even know to look for.

For example, is a refrigerator running longer than it used to? Is an AC unit taking longer to cool the house? Is a pump cycling more frequently? And if something looks unusual, can AI dig into the other available data and help figure out why?

One thing I've been careful about is that just because something has operated a certain way for months doesn't necessarily mean it's operating correctly. A baseline tells you what's been happening, not necessarily what's normal or healthy for that equipment.

I'm using the OpenAI API for the actual analysis. I originally experimented with running a local model on my Mac, but ended up switching to OpenAI because I was getting much better results and the cost isn’t crazy. I'm sure that'll increase as I have it analyzing more things, but so far cost hasn't really been an issue.

The part I'm working toward now is having it proactively go through the house and look for developing problems without me having to ask. I'm also working on having AI evaluate my Pushover notifications so I'm not getting interrupted by a bunch of alerts that really don't need my attention.

It's definitely still a work in progress, but I've been pretty impressed with what it can already figure out from the data.

Anyone else doing something like this? I'm especially curious if people are using AI for actual historical analysis and monitoring rather than just voice control or generating automations.

Would be interested to hear what others have tried and what's working for them.

💬 Discussion Apple's new HomeView looks great, but will it actually be useful for Home Assistant users?

Post image
• Upvotes

Apple finally announced HomeView, and honestly the hardware looks pretty sweet

$299 for a 7-inch smart home display with Siri AI, camera feeds, and personalized controls isn't unreasonable but I'm curious how useful it'll actually be for those of us running Home Assistant. I already bridge all my HA devices through HomeBridge for me and my clients and it works great, but that's not the same as having full access to my dashboards, custom integrations, and automations.

I'd love to see Apple embrace more flexibility here especially with the mindset of the new CEO.

Would you consider replacing your current HA wall dashboard with one of these, or is the lack of customization already a dealbreaker?

🗣️ Voice & Assist Built a system to make HA Voice work with Hermes enabling voice commands

Thumbnail

So I built hermes-jarvis, which connects to your hermes instance, and uses HA voice to listen for "Hey Jarvis" wake word.

- Long running, agentic replies are spoken smartly, as soon as the brain produces them. So code blocks are not read line by line, and the response becomes shorter, the longer it takes.

- The stop word and the wake word work during long jobs, and "stop" silences the reply without cancelling the job.

- If the reply ends in a question, the device listens again by itself.

- Works with Hermes agent or anything OpenAI-compatible (Ollama, etc.), with cloud or fully local speech to text, and Piper for TTS

- Own firmware (stock plus a few changes) flashable from the browser; Docker image; small web UI with a live view

Caveats: tested on the Voice PE only. The device serves one voice client, so it can't be used with HA at the same time. No timers or HA device control.

❓ Support Random plex devices appearing.

Since I updated my Plex container, I’ve been getting some weird devices appearing in my Home Assistant Plex service. The strange thing is, they appear and then go off-line immediately and show no activity.

Poc and scan show up.

When I check my Plex container, I see no evidence of being hacked. That being said, I don’t have any evidence. I’ve not been hacked either.

Before I blow away my Plex instance, has anybody else seen this before?

❓ Support Visualizer/map for BLE device tracking that isn’t vibeslop?

I’ve tried a couple of these but they were super buggy had obvious Claude UIs.

I just want to put all my Bermuda proxies and bluetooth devices on a floorplan map and see roughly where they are. It seems like this is eminently doable, and done commercially even.

Anybody have a working solution?

💬 Discussion Small Rant :)

Prices of HA green machines are getting ridiculous now on places like ebay, up to £300 in the UK! and the worst thing is that they are selling. Who on earth is paying this kind of money for such a low powered machine?

Dont get me wrong the HA green is a great bit of kit but its not worth any more than its original selling price.

Are people getting these just because they are plug and play?

Had to vent... sick of seeing people making the price of all hardware go through the roof

🖼️ Show & Tell I got tired of jumping between 4 apps for my printers, so I built a HA app that puts everything in one Dashboard

I have a Bambu X1C and a Snapmaker U1 and was constantly switching between Bambu Handy, the Klipper web UI, and HA for the smart plugs and sensors. So I started building my own dashboard as a HA app (add-on) and it kind of grew from there.

What it does right now:

- both printers side by side with live cameras, progress, temps and what filament is loaded

- filament inventory with storage locations, the AMS shows up as its own location and spools get detected automatically

- print history with the final camera snapshot, cost per print and some stats

- maintenance reminders, smart plug auto off after a print, notifications with a camera image through the companion app

- I recently added room climate too, since my printers sit in a small room and I wanted to keep an eye on humidity and VOC

Everything runs locally, nothing goes to any cloud. The Bambu printer can stay in normal cloud mode, you don't need LAN only mode for monitoring.

It's free and open source. Would love feedback, especially from people with other printer models than mine. Someone with a P1S already confirmed the camera works, which made my day.

Check it out here:

🖼️ Show & Tell wakesmith - now a whole workflow!

Post image
0 Upvotes

I posted about this yesterday but took it further. I hope folks find it useful, I've found it very useful so far!

The first release of wakesmith as an app: a web page and a command line for training microWakeWord and openWakeWord models locally. The earlier LiveKit-based recipe stays available as [v0.1](https://github.com/HuskerMinion/wakesmith/tree/v0.1).

New

- **Web app** (`wakesmith serve`): a dashboard of your wake words, a guided new-word flow (what it's for, the phrase, real voices, train, pick and export), live training progress with time left, Help, Hardware and Data & licenses pages, and delete or cancel for wake words.
- **Hardware detection and setup:** Intel Arc (XPU), NVIDIA (CUDA, including WSL2 through `nvidia-smi`), AMD (ROCm, experimental) or CPU (each GPU build is checked with a real calculation on the card before use), with settings derived from GPU memory, cores and free RAM. Warnings for low disk and for less than about 16 GB of RAM.
- **Recording in the browser:** prompted takes, a level meter, automatic stop, speaker names, held-out takes for testing, room-sound clips. `serve --https` makes the microphone work from other devices on your LAN.
- **Mozilla Common Voice** as a real-voice source for common words: counts the takes, cuts the phrase out with forced alignment, and splits by speaker into a test set and optional training takes. `wakesmith commonvoice-download` and `commonvoice-count`.
- **Runs kept and compared:** every finished run is saved with its results and models; Compare shows them side by side at one cutoff.
- **Device-accurate scoring:** microWakeWord through ESPHome's audio front end, or the zserge front end (`wakesmith test --frontend zserge`); openWakeWord through its runtime's own feature extraction. Exports record the front end in their metadata.
- **Exports:** microWakeWord `.tflite` with its ESPHome manifest and YAML snippet; openWakeWord `.tflite` built from plain operations, so small device interpreters can run it; a LICENSE-NOTE.txt listing what that model was trained on.

Known limits

- AMD (ROCm) is experimental and untested. NVIDIA is tested on one card (RTX 5060 Ti under WSL2); plain Linux with NVIDIA isn't yet.
- Training uses the CPU: microWakeWord's TensorFlow has no Intel GPU support.
- The default data profile uses non-commercial datasets, so trained models are for personal use. An "open" profile is planned.
- Results so far come from one household; please treat them as a direction, and see the call for testers.

🧩 Custom Integration I made Kid Watch: free parental controls for Home Assistant using AdGuard Home, your TVs and Plex (beta)

I wanted one place to see what the kids are actually doing in the evening, without paying for a cloud parental-control app that sends everything to someone else's server. So I built Kid Watch: a custom integration and card for Home Assistant.

What it does

(1) Each child gets a tab: what they're on right now, screen time today against a budget, and a timeline of their evening

(2) It reads your AdGuard Home query log per device, so it knows "TikTok on Emma's iPhone" or "Roblox on the iPad"

(3) TVs too: it watches your media players (Plex, Apple TV, Samsung and so on) and shows the show, the TV and the age rating

(4) If a show is above a child's age limit (say a 15 on a 12-year-old's TV), you get a phone alert and the card pops up the TV with Pause / Turn off buttons. Optionally it stops the show by itself

(5) One-tap controls through AdGuard: pause the internet, bedtime, SafeSearch, and block TikTok / YouTube / Roblox / Snapchat etc. per child

(6) All set up in the UI (add a child, tick their devices and TVs, pick an age limit). Everything stays on your own network

What it can't do (being honest)

(1) DNS only shows which apps and sites, not the pages, searches or YouTube videos inside them

(2) Mobile data is invisible (it only sees your Wi-Fi)

(3) You need to block DoH / iCloud Private Relay, or devices can go around AdGuard

The video uses made-up kids and devices, but it's the real card. It's a beta: tested against a real AdGuard Home and HA 2026.9 in a lab, not yet in lots of real homes. Installs as a HACS custom repository:

https://github.com/spikey1965/ha-kid-watch

If you try it, I'd love to hear what works, what breaks, and what you'd want added. Issues on GitHub or comments here are both great.

🎨 Custom Theme Looking for Zooz Alternatives...

My entire house uses Zooz switches. But with the shortages at the Smartest House only getting worse, I've decided to switch to a more reliable source for Z-Wave smart switches. Zooz doesn't have the best longeviry, either, Mine seem to die after about three years.

So what's out there that isn't $75 per switch and doesn't suck?

🗣️ Voice & Assist I built a fully local, real-time AI voice assistant for Home Assistant — ~230ms response latency!

• Upvotes

I've always wanted a Jarvis-like assistant that I could actually talk to naturally, without waiting several seconds for responses or sending everything to the cloud.

So I built Ming Voice, an open-source speech-to-speech assistant that runs entirely on your GPU.

Unlike a traditional voice command system, you can have natural conversations, interrupt it mid-sentence, and ask follow-up questions while it controls your home.

It can:

Control lights, thermostats, locks, vacuums, media players, and more through Home Assistant

Understand follow-up commands like "now turn it off"

Handle multiple devices and scheduled actions

Listen continuously using a wake word

Make announcements from Home Assistant automations

Delegate complex requests to a Hermes Agent

The best part is the speed: I'm getting ~230ms median latency from the end of speech to the first response audio on my RX 7900 XTX.

No cloud AI or subscription required, and it works from your phone too.

I attached a demo showing it controlling my actual smart home.

I'd love feedback from other Home Assistant users!

🖼️ Show & Tell I built a free 3D floor plan for Home Assistant – now in the HACS store.

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I’m Torsten, the developer of NeonPlan 3D. As of this week the integration is officially part of the HACS default store, so you can now just search for “NeonPlan 3D” in HACS – no custom repository needed anymore.

For those who haven’t come across it yet: NeonPlan 3D lets you draw your floor plan directly in the browser and turns it into a 3D model of your home that is connected to Home Assistant. You see your house the way it is right now and can control it from there.

What it can do:

  • Draw rooms, walls, doors, windows, stairs and multiple floors in the built-in editor, including roofs, balconies and outdoor areas like lawns, terraces and pools
  • Place devices in the house: lights glow in their actual color and brightness, shutters move, windows and doors show whether they are open, sensors show their values
  • Tap a light, a shutter or a scene in the 3D view to switch it
  • Furniture can be linked to entities, so a TV shows that it is on, a washing machine shows its status, a wallbox or a heat pump shows its power
  • Voice control through Assist (“show the living room”) and a microphone button for wall tablets
  • A furniture library sorted by type and room, with pictures, sizes and free resizing that keeps legs and handles in shape
  • Runs on older, low-power wall tablets as well
  • Available in 16 languages, everything runs locally

You can try it in the browser without installing anything, using example data:
https://neonplan3d.mastershort.de

GitHub (code, issues, manual):
https://github.com/Mastershort/neonplan3d

The integration itself is free and open source. If you want more furniture, there are optional furniture packs and Pro add-ons (for example energy flow, cameras or live TV screens) in my shop. That is how I fund the development:
https://mastershort.de/en/neonplan3d/

If you have ideas or feature requests, there is an ideas board where you can vote, and the most requested things usually end up in one of the next releases:

🖼️ Show & Tell [Custom Card] Westworld Rehoboam card

Thumbnail
gallery
17 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my latest project with you:

The HomeAssistant Lovelace Rehoboam card.

First of all, credit where credit is due:

I did not come up with this visualization or the idea to use it as a home assistant dashboard. All credit goes to the creators of Westworld and Emil Besirevic (user ‘ebes’ on Artstation) who inspired me with his Unity visualization of the same thing.

I set out to build this card for 3 reasons

  • I think it’s super cool, and unfortunately Emil did not share code/instructions on how to set up his version
  • Even if he did, I doubt my slow-as-hell Fire Tablets & Echo Shows would’ve been able to display it in any acceptable manner
  • AI agents exist so you can build whatever you can dream up

So here’s the result of that work

github.com

A few details about it:

  • Pure JS and WebGL, no external dependencies to install, should run on many browsers
  • Fully customizable via YAML and a dashboard configurator
  • Playground with config export available here
  • Designed with devices like the Echo Show in mind. These things aren’t super powerful, so that was the design target. Running it at ~30-40 FPS at render resolution 1.0 on my Echo Show 8 Gen 1 (MediaTek MT8163) with Kiosk Satellite consumes about ~25% of CPU while the screen is on. For any weaker devices, the card has resolution and render-resolution dials that can further improve performance at the cost of visual fidelity
  • Lots of details & aspects of the animation are exposed via config options, so you can tweak it to your liking
  • Multilingual (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch available from the start). These translations are provided by Claude so mistakes are likely. Any text that actually shows up in the card can be overridden by the user, so even if the translations are crap, the card doesn’t have to be
  • Interactive: Divergence callouts and the center of the card have tap and hold actions that can be customized

What to keep in mind:

  • I’m aware this is merely an approximation of the way the original looks. This was the goal from the start. Something that looks ~80% similar, while not killing low-powered devices.
  • This project is vibe-coded in its entirety. While I do software engineering, I don’t have much experience in JS and basically none in WebGL. I hope by sharing this, some people better than me will share their improvements and maybe help approximate the actual Rehoboam UI better without slowing down low-powered devices too much. Pull Requests and Feedback encouraged and welcome
  • I’m not sure whether I’ll have time to maintain this, so please keep in mind that if home assistant ever breaks something about the APIs this card uses, the card will probably break as well.

I hope this dashboard card will be useful to someone. I certainly love the look of it on my smart-displays

Cheers

Florian

❓ Support Support for Lettuce Grow hydroponics?

I recently got a Lettuce Grow Farmstead indoor hydroponics thingy (to grow your own veggies) and it comes with a custom Wi-Fi enabled two-outlet plug that controls the water pump and lights of the hydroponics tower.

I wonder if anyone has looked into or made a Home Assistant integration work. My main use case would be to temporarily switch off the the lights when I'm watching a movie on the TV in the same room as the lights are very bright and distracting.

❓ Support Zigbee OTA keeps failing

• Upvotes

I have a pretty decent mesh of hue bulbs and inovelli switches.

71 devices all of which are routers.

Whenever I update either the inovelli or hue they fail part way through and need to restart multiple times. Even for devices with exceptional link quality.

I'm using an SLZB-MR4U and the default Z2MQTT OTA settings.

Is there something I can change so I don't have to baby these updates? I have some my helpers and an automation handling serializing the updates so only 1 goes at a time already.

🧩 Custom Integration Voice alerts for food delivery orders in Home Assistant: no account login, just iPhone notifications + Shortcuts (beta)

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I built a small open-source Home Assistant project that announces by voice when a food delivery order is accepted, when the rider is arriving, and when the order is late (30 minutes by default, configurable).

How it works: no account login, no token. The delivery app sends a notification to your iPhone, an iOS 27 Shortcuts automation ("When I receive a notification from <app>" with a text filter) calls an HA action through the Companion app, and HA speaks on your Echo (Alexa Media Player) or HomePod. If the rider is late, your phones get a notification too.

What's in the repo:
- A HACS custom integration (beta) with a config flow: speakers, optional alarm check, time window for voice, late timer, phones to alert
- Two actions: consegne.order_accepted and consegne.order_arriving
- An alternative with plain YAML scripts, for people who don't want an integration
- Guides in Italian and English

Status, honestly:
- Verified by me on real orders: Glovo (Italy) notification texts, Echo Show 5 announce, HomePod via tts.google_translate_say
- The integration itself is beta: 11 automated tests pass on HA 2026.2.3, but I have not yet tested it on a real HA install
- Deliveroo and Just Eat notification texts are NOT verified yet

Looking for beta testers, especially people with Deliveroo or Just Eat who can share the exact notification text (please blank out names and addresses). Feedback and issues welcome.

Unofficial project, not affiliated with any delivery company, Amazon, Apple or Home Assistant.

💬 Discussion Homematic IP radiator valves: real-world experience? (cast iron radiators, steady regulation, Home Assistant)

Hi all,

I'm considering Homematic IP radiator thermostats for an old stone house with cast iron radiators and an on/off condensing boiler. I previously tried Netatmo valves and wasn't happy: rooms often feel uncomfortable and the regulation felt like on/off cycles (too warm, then too cold) instead of the steady behaviour of a classic wax thermostatic head.

I'd love to hear from people actually using Homematic IP valves:

  1. Which exact model do you use (eTRV-2, Evo, Compact eTRV-C-2, other), and would you buy it again?

  2. Do you use an external room sensor or wall thermostat (e.g. HmIP-STH / WTH-2), or rely on the valve's built-in sensor? Did it make a noticeable difference?

  3. Does the regulation actually stay steady? Radiator constantly lukewarm and temperature stable at the setpoint, or do you still get hot/cold swings?

  4. Do you run them through Home Assistant + Better Thermostat (Homematic IP Cloud, or locally via a CCU/OpenCCU), or just with the Homematic IP app and Access Point?

  5. If you use Home Assistant + Better Thermostat: what real advantages did you find compared to the official app alone? Was it worth the extra setup and maintenance?

Any tips on radio range through thick walls, battery life, or noise would also be very welcome.

Thanks!

⚡ Energy Shelly under-reading retailer app by 25%

I've had a Shelly EM Gen4 installed and compared it against my elec retailer's app. It was under-reading the grid by about 25%. I realised I hadn't changed the Shelly channel setting from 50A to 120A clamp. That's been done but the difference in readings hasn't changed.

The house is only single phase.

I don't think I can do anything else in the Shelly so is the fix just a template to scale the value ?
