Updated rules for r/Hobart

Hi All,

We've updated the rules for r/Hobart after some feedback from users and discussion. Not much has changed but here is a summary of the changes:

  • Added doxxing to Rule about no illegal content;
  • Added a no personals content to the NSFW rule (to prevent people looking for hookups or dating) Includes the appropriate sites to do this on;
  • Added a no sales or promotional content rule (this is covered in Rule 1, but doesn't hurt to be able to refer to it in a separate rule);
  • Added a no requests for living assistance rule to address the cases of people asking for help on the subreddit and putting themselves in danger. Included a link to appropriate assistance websites and services.

this place has been gaining some traction in the community, for the wrong reasons! Apparently the manager is a complete A$$ and treats staff and customers like crap, and is very unprofessional. I've not seen so many people agree about a person like this. Refer to facebook for OP about it all. Feel free to add comments about it below

Any word on You Can See Everything Hobart Screenings??

Hi all,

Does anyone have any intel on whether You Can See Everything will have any screenings in Hobart? A24 are notoriously terrible distributors so I won’t be surprised if it doesn’t make it here but I thought I’d check to see if anyone has the inside word before I start planning a trip to Melbourne to see it otherwise.

Thanks!

HCC Meeting - Monday 19 October 2026

Tonight, Monday October 19th, Hobart City Council meets for the final time before the polls close.

Fittingly, the agenda includes a self-congratulatory End of Term Report, giving Councillors one last opportunity to celebrate their 'achievements' before voters deliver their own assessment.

After four years of political infighting, questionable priorities, escalating rates, and seemingly endless controversy, the council has certainly left its mark on Hobart. Whether that's something to celebrate is another question.

Don't forget to vote!

Lawyer/Solicitor Recommendations - Business Sale.

Hey there, I am selling a small business (under 50k) and am looking for a lawyer to go over a contract I have drafted to check it over and make sure all bases are covered.

It is a limited scope job, and I thought before I shop around that people on here may have recommendations for someone they have used for something similar?

Looking for someone easy to understand and reasonable cost (as reasonable as lawyers get!) Thanks.

retrieving my backpack that fell down the cliff near taroona

I had an accident yesterday where my backpack (containing passport, wallet, keys) rolled down the Alum Cliffs in Taroona, near where Glen Albyn Creek meets the sea.
I'm looking for someone with a small boat who can take me out there to retrieve it. The trip would be very short as I marked the exact location on Google map so hopefully we don't need to search alone the rocky shoreline.

I'm willing to pay $300-400 for your time and fuel.
Please DM me if you can help. Really appreciate it.🤝

Steaks where to buy them. Wagyu.

Looking for place recommendations for wagyu steaks. Even online will do. Also good quality rib eyes.

I been buying my bulk steak from neds in New town. Can't fault the quality of the Scotch fillet and the gentleman will help you pick up a good one.

Main place I can think of is Ziggy, Wursthaus, butchers (which I go to)- west Hobart butcher, vermeys butcher.

I actually want like one of those 1kg tomahawks to cook for me and mates for now but also thought an updated list will be great.

Also please state if a place is halal or kosher etc. Me and many others don't eat halal, kosher for religious reasons. Please don't turn this into one of those posts. Let's stay on topic.

Hi, I will be visiting Hobart over the Halloween weekend and staying at the movenpick in Elizabeth street, I am wondering where is the best street parking overnight for my car, (It is a rental). I don't intend to need it during the day, but just trying to see if I can avoid the $42 which movenpick want to charge

Living in Kingston Beach

From my few times visiting there, Kingston Beach looks pretty liveable. Walkable, a few shops and cafes, pub, the beach right there.

The couple of downsides I can see are:

  • it gets busy on weekends and in summer,
  • there's no convenience store and the closest supermarket is a couple of km away in Kingston

What am I not seeing? What is the commute into the city like - driving, public transport, cycling? There seems to be quite a mix of housing. What's the demographic and, I don't know, general vibe?

UTAS Hobart appartments

hey. I am hoping to get a studio in the UTAS Hobart Apartments, or if not, Hytten. I will be a second year UTAS student as I spend my first year at Jane college. I’ve already applied.

im wondering if I’m disadvantaged as I am not a new or returning resident, and is it hard to get a studio at either? secondly, is it hard to get a car park permit? I applied for one on my application.

I have a place at Jane next year just in case but super keen to leave as I need my own space. and Jane isn’t idea tbh

An open letter to Ryan Posselt. The Wannabe Mamdani, an illustration in failure.

Good afternoon Ryan

People are deeply frustrated with local delivery failures for the real bread and butter of council. Our rates sit higher than any other metropolitan area, CBD vacancies are climbing at an alarming rate. Infrastructure and maintenance are falling behind, and we sit at the precipice of demographic decline and growing irrelevance compared to the councils around us.

I'm in Mount Nelson, perennially neglected to the point where I'd honestly rather we seceded to Kingborough. Our street lighting is constantly inadequate and deficient compared to topographically similar areas in Glenorchy (I can't say your light dimming idea won much favour here). Our "footpaths", which are mostly either non-existent or bitumen spillover which is nigh indistinguishable from road, haven't been updated since the Olympic torch came through over 25 years ago.

The only substantive improvements to our area have come from private enterprise, council have done bugger all. The doctors, store, dentists, the new pharmacy, Hell even any new footpaths we might have have come about from new housing developments. That's not inherently a bad thing, but the differences between the new privately developed areas and the old council maintained parts are stark.

Forgive me, but at the start of this campaign, I envisaged putting you towards the top of my ticket. You can probably tell from my profile picture that I'm very sympathetic towards Labor. However, not only have you got into the mud with the disgusting far right pigs on our council, you've come out of it with a snout of your own.

You promised a comprehensive policy focus on housing, and yet you've spent all of your airtime this campaign away from that, and instead focusing on niche and frankly weird issues that are all CBD obsessed, to the point I wonder if you forgot the vast majority of us don't actually live there, and have communities of our own that you'd be just as responsible for as our Lord Mayor. I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if more people lived on Nelson Rd than Collins St. I know you have your policies on the big bread and butter issues, but you never champion them when you can find some mindless thought bubble to parrot instead.

And then there's the never-ending rejections and humiliations. The council right, city officials, Bridget Archer, *your own parents*! As a Labor voter I generally want someone more pragmatic and grounded than the Greens, more people focused than the Liberals, and less elitist than both. Instead, you spend a huge quantity of your time elite virtue signalling with your grand CBD objectives and your antics like reading poetry in response to the Bondi shooting, and the Socialist candidate, to his very legitimate credit, has been far, far more grounded than you.

It all feels very despondent. You were supposed to offer something very different, something hopeful. The Greens who've hitherto dominated council look tired and jaded, worn down by their ineffectual opposition to public sector cuts at the state level and by scandal both locally and Federally. The council right have become dominated by their chudded up hard right wing, same as is happening across the country.

And here you were at one point as the only alternative. Now? Congratulations, you've made it so the only realistic choices are now some old bloke who has been there forever, another old bloke who has been there forever but is a Green, and Louise Bloomfield, a leftover remnant of the moderate and pragmatic centre right.

I'm viscerally disappointed in you; the other Labor candidates have been fantastic in my opinion, but you having the highest profile has gone a long way to ruining things. I know you'll be unfortunately reelected; your seat really should go to Wallace or Bari, but name recognition trumps all. Next time, please think on your mistakes from this time, stay above the constant petty spats, and bring a program that focuses on where people live, rather than just creating more amenities and boondoggles to be enjoyed by people who don't live here!

Next time, please take a good hard look at yourself and consider whether you really have lived up to your idol, Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani, unlike you, is laser focused on local issues. Potholes, rents, budget management, housing supply. That's what he's focused on, with the occasional foray into government run supermarkets and condemning (rightly) Netanyahu. All politicians have an ego, but the good ones go into bat for those they claim to represent, and in that respect, even Louise Elliot does a far better job than you, it's just that she goes into bat for the landlord class.

Your constituency isn't supposed to be the well to do old luvvies and former hippies with million dollar plus paid off houses. It's supposed to be workers and the young struggling to get a foothold to climb up and improve their lives, and the older people who didn't win the property lottery, the same as Mamdani. They can't afford rent, they're buried in negative equity on an overpriced house, groceries and bills creep ever upward, and infrastructure fails around them as a pervasive miasma of dealing blankets the city. This campaign, in a vain attempt to get attention for yourself, you've let all of them, all of us, down.

Next time, do better.

Regards, a disgusted, disheartened voter.

HTF is a COVER BAND charging $122 a ticket?

Many great original Australian and even international bands have run through the Odeon over the years for $60-90. I find this just offensive and blood boiling to the core. WTAF? How can this band sleep at night?
