Title: My contribution to Kestra was completed and the issue is closed! ๐ŸŽ‰

Hey everyone! ๐Ÿ‘‹

I'm excited to share a milestone in my open-source journey. I contributed to Kestra, an open-source orchestration platform, by working on issue #18143, related to the Flow Editor's split horizontal and split vertical functionality.

The issue is now closed, and QA has been completed! โœ…

This experience helped me learn more about contributing to a real-world codebase, working with maintainers, and improving my open-source development skills.

Thanks to the Kestra team for reviewing and testing the fix!

๐Ÿ”— Issue: https://github.com/kestra-io/kestra/issues/18143

I'm looking forward to contributing more to open source. ๐Ÿš€

Concerns about judging transparency at a college Hacktoberfest event โ€” Best Use of Gemma 4 & Best Open Source Project

Post image
1 Upvotes

Our college community recently conducted a Hacktoberfest event, and I have concerns about two award outcomes that deserve clarification from the organizers.

  • Best Use of Gemma 4: Based on my understanding of the winning project's implementation, I have concerns that Gemma 4 may not have been used as required by the category.
  • Best Open Source Project: The winning project's GitHub repository reportedly became private shortly after the results were announced, raising questions about compliance with the submission and open-source requirements.

I recognize that these observations alone do not prove misconduct. However, hackathons depend on transparent judging, clear eligibility criteria, and fair competition for every participant.

I'd appreciate input from the wider hackathon and open-source community, including anyone familiar with MLH/Hacktoberfest judging guidelines. What is the appropriate way to request an independent review of these outcomes?

I'm seeking clarification and accountability, not harassment or personal attacks. The goal should be to ensure that awards reflect the published criteria and that every participant is treated fairly.

fzfx - A fast, local fuzzy + semantic search CLI for shell commands

Post image
5 Upvotes

I participated in a local Hack Day at my college, and my project was fzfx.

The idea was simple. Tools like fzf are truly fast, but they work only when you remember the exact syntax. What if you forget the complete syntax but remember its functions? Regular fuzzy logic can't search that.

So I combined fuzzy logic with semantic searching. I chose fastembed, which runs an ONNX runtime of its own. I selected the AllMiniLML6V2 model to embed the list of commands into the model. Then, the query would be matched with the embeddings, and the scores for cosine similarities of every command would be returned. (Please don't tell me to go into extreme details of this implementation within fastembed. Its my first time working with anything remotely close to AI; I had never even heard of ONNX before)

The fuzzy-matcher crate did the fuzzy search part, and returned the scores. fzfx combines both these scores with this formula to calculate the final score:

score = (alpha * vector_score) + ((1 - alpha) * fuzzy_score)

The current value of alpha is 0.7. Some commands are appended with some additional keywords for simpler understanding by the embedding model, like 'remove delete files' for rm. It also ignores sudo in commands starting with it, although plans are to improve this behavior.

The results are definitely not always-correct. There's more tuning and customization left to do. So, I'm certainly not claiming it can replace your current tools or workflow.

However, on the brighter side, it does have some pretty neat features:

  • Model and embeddings cache after first run, so same commands take negligible time (~729ns) on cache hits
  • -c/--copy to copy the selected command, or -x/--exec to execute it directly
  • -q/--query to provide the query string in the command, otherwise it will ask when running
  • -C/--clear-cache to remove all embeddings cache, and --clear-all to remove both embeddings and model cache files
  • Script and agent friendly with -r/--raw mode which only outputs the top-scored command to stdout
  • -k/--top-k to specify the number of matches to show (default = 10)

To see more details, visit the repository, and drop a star if you like it ๐Ÿ‘€

PS: Got to know that bincode crate had stopped maintaining. Learnt it the hard way. Will replace it with a different crate in the next versions. PPS: I won at the Hack Day and got an Arduino UNO Q, lesgooo ๐ŸŽ‰

BOOTH, a lightweight checkpoint layer for AI. I am looking for Hacktoberfest contributors

Iโ€™m building BOOTH, a lightweight checkpoint layer for LLM outputs.

The idea is simple: donโ€™t automatically trust every LLM response. Check it first.

BOOTH includes check_with_evidence(), which lets you compare an LLM answer against evidence your RAG pipeline has already retrieved.

The project is at v0.5.2 and is:

  • Python
  • Zero runtime dependencies
  • Provider-agnostic
  • Sync + async
  • MIT licensed

I have a few open issues for Hacktoberfest, including provider examples, documentation improvements, and structured-output parsing.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Issues: https://github.com/Vedantgitbot/booth/issues
๐Ÿ”— Repo: https://github.com/Vedantgitbot/booth

Iโ€™d love to have contributors take a look, especially anyone interested in Python, RAG, or LLM reliability.

Whether youโ€™re making your first contribution or already experienced with open source, youโ€™re welcome.

Kicking off Hacktoberfest 2026 by contributing to Kestra! #KestraHacktober

Just submitted my first PR for Kestra Hacktoberfest 2026! ๐ŸŽ‰

I worked on adding unit test coverage for the useThemeCycle Vue composable in Kestra Core, ensuring keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+Shift+L) cycle themes properly and clean up listeners on unmount.

Looking forward to making more open-source contributions this month! #KestraHacktober #Hacktoberfest #OpenSource

LibreDB Studio (web-based SQL IDE) has beginner-friendly issues open, mostly docs and translations

I maintain LibreDB Studio, a web SQL IDE. We keep a stocked set of good first issue tickets and I write each one with the file paths, the repro, and the acceptance criteria spelled out, so nobody has to reverse-engineer the codebase to make a first PR.

A few that are unassigned right now:

- Proofreading the Japanese and Chinese READMEs. No native speaker has read either one. No code needed.

- Adding a Russian README. The drift guard test that checks it already exists, so you get instant feedback.

- A real bug: two database providers report a size of 0 when the size is actually unknown.

- Packaging for nixpkgs or the AUR, if you want to learn distro packaging.

Stack is Next.js, TypeScript and Bun. One thing to know up front: CI enforces 100% line coverage, so a code change needs its test in the same PR. I review quickly and I will walk you through the test if that part is new to you.

You do not have to pay for the T-shirt, beware of fishing

I had no idea, but apparently a lot of people think weโ€™re supposed to pay for the T-shirt.
I have seen many comments saying they got an email asking them to pay.

Iโ€™m not sure what those emails are, but just a reminder: you dont have to pay a dime to receive the T-shirt.
So be careful with any weird emails asking for payment, only trust the official ones.

Until next year, have fun

It's been three months since I started working on my project, Atoll

The day I received the PR Acceptance mail was one of the happiest days in the last six months of my life, in between all the struggles and hardships

Heartfelt thanks to the community for recognizing my project and honouring me with the swag, I really can't express how overwhelmed I am๐Ÿ˜ญ

Will definitely work harder next year!
