Hey everyone!

I've been working on Sanket, an open-source GNOME Shell extension inspired by the GNOME OS design mockups.

It brings a floating notification island, compact Quick Settings, an enhanced calendar, world clocks, and animated weather to GNOME Shell.

I've included screenshots and animations in the README. I'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions!

Extensions Live wallpaper on GNOME 50/51 with multi-monitor, clickable desktop icons & Conky on top 🎬

4 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I just released version 1.3.0 of Gnome Live Wallpaper, my extension for animated video/GIF wallpapers on GNOME, powered by mpv.

GNOME 50 broke a few things under the hood, so this release fixes playback on GNOME 50 and 51 and adds some of your most requested features:

  • Multi-monitor playback – wallpapers show on all connected monitors, adapted to each display's resolution and scaling (including fractional scaling like 125% / 150%)
  • Clickable desktop icons – mouse input passes through the wallpaper, so DING icons and right-click work as usual
  • Conky on top – your Conky widgets stay visible over the live wallpaper
  • Stays in the background – the wallpaper can no longer be dragged or take focus
  • GNOME 51 support

Thanks to everyone who gave feedback on my first post – the right-click/desktop issue is fixed now!

Next up: bringing these features to GNOME 45–49 as well.

You only need mpv and ffmpeg installed.

Feedback and bug reports are very welcome – especially from multi-monitor and fractional scaling setups!

If you enjoy it, a ⭐ on GitHub or a review on the GNOME Extensions page would mean a lot. Thanks! 🙂

Question Can I embed a JS molecular viewer engine (Mol*) inside a GTK app?

2 Upvotes

One of my gripes in my work is that the molecular viewer I've been using (PyMol and ChimeraX) for basic inspection of structures (nothing analyses, I use other tools for this) does not fit within GNOME. It looks batshit in terms of UI. So I've been thinking of building a protein viewer (just viewer, no other functionalities) GTK app. RCSB and other online viewer uses Mol* as their renderer / engine for the protein structure, but it was written in JS. Would it be possible to embed a JS molecular viewer engine / renderer inside a GTK app? If so, how? Maybe some of you can provide me a project that does similar thing so I can use it as an example and framework for the app I am planning.

Additionally, is Python or Rust better for GTK app? My main expertise is in Python, but I can learn Rust since I've been interested at it since 2022 but never found a purpose to learn it.

Thanks for your opinions

Question Discord PTT possible?

2 Upvotes

Hello,
Is it possible to use Discord PTT when the Window is not focused? I know it used to not be possible before, has this been changed/fixed? GNOME 50

Here's a Toggle Mute script which works without invoking an annoying sound which some headsets do when their microphone get muted. It sets the microphone sound to 0 rather than muting it. This should work with other apps as well.

#!/usr/bin/env bash

# ==============================================================================
# SCRIPT: Universal System Mic Mute Toggle with Audio Feedback
# ==============================================================================

# 1. State & Sound Files
STATE_FILE="${XDG_RUNTIME_DIR}/mic_baseline_vol"
SOUND_MUTE="${HOME}/.local/share/sounds/discord/mute.mp3"
SOUND_UNMUTE="${HOME}/.local/share/sounds/discord/unmute.mp3"

# 2. Get active mic volume percentage (e.g., 0, 10, 70, 100)
CURRENT_VOL=$(wpctl get-volume @ | awk '{print int($2 * 100)}')

# 3. Read saved baseline or default to 100%
if [ -f "$STATE_FILE" ]; then
    BASELINE=$(cat "$STATE_FILE")
else
    BASELINE=100
fi

# Baseline threshold logic (10% minimum threshold)
if [ "$CURRENT_VOL" -ge 10 ]; then
    BASELINE="$CURRENT_VOL"
    echo "$BASELINE" > "$STATE_FILE"
elif [ "$BASELINE" -lt 10 ]; then
    BASELINE=10
    echo "$BASELINE" > "$STATE_FILE"
fi

# 4. Toggle Volume & Play Audio Feedback
if [ "$CURRENT_VOL" -gt 0 ]; then
    # Active -> Mute system audio completely (0%)
    wpctl set-volume @ 0%

    # Play mute confirmation sound
    if [ -f "$SOUND_MUTE" ]; then
        pw-play "$SOUND_MUTE" &
    fi
else
    # Muted -> Restore saved baseline volume
    wpctl set-volume u/DEFAULT_AUDIO_SOURCE@ "${BASELINE}%"

    # Play unmute confirmation sound
    if [ -f "$SOUND_UNMUTE" ]; then
        pw-play "$SOUND_UNMUTE" &
    fi
fi

exit 0

A similar solution could probably be made for PTT if there's a daemon running in the background.

Question How do I fix my tiling in gnome

1 Upvotes

There is this sort of way gnome behaves which I want to change. Here it goes-
Whenever I wanna use split screen I just do Super+Left/Right arrow. Both of the halved windows get aligned after I select the second window that I want in my split view. I have another instance of my browser that is running on split screen (I keep the terminal window on right and switch between nautilus and my browser on the right). Whenever I alt+tab to open my browser and then I want to execute some command in my terminal and I click on it, my browser goes away and my nautilus comes up.
Is there any way I can just alt tab and the new window automatically goes into split screen with my terminal.

LLM Assisted I made a shader wallpaper app for GNOME (and Kitty)

128 Upvotes

I’ve been working on Wallshader and thought some of you might enjoy it.

You pick a shader, play around with the colors and settings, and use it as your wallpaper. You can leave it animated or grab a frame as a still image. There are presets to start with, and you can save your own too.

It works with Kitty as well, so you can put still or animated shaders behind your terminal. Both desktop and terminal animations keep running after you close the app.

The UI is GTK 4/libadwaita, and the effects come from Paper Shaders. Animated desktop wallpapers need GNOME 50 on Wayland; still wallpapers work on older versions too.

It’s open source, with downloads and setup instructions here: github.com/stonega/wallshader

Curious to hear what you think, especially if you try it on a different setup.

Question Contributor Atlas: Reason for high number of bug reporters in 2006/2007?

Post image
34 Upvotes

GNOME Contributor Atlas shows a very high number for bug reporters in 2006 and 2007. What is the story behind this exceptional number? Was there an anonymous reporting tool, where every bug report had its own unique user or where there really that many people reporting bugs?

Is the drop afterwards related to the popularity of Ubuntu? And the fact that most bug reports landed in Ubuntus bug tracker instead of GNOMEs?

Edit: Evolution and Files (nautilus) each have more than 10k contributors in 2007.

Opinion Glean: A Proposal for a Default GNOME Clipboard Manager

Thumbnail
gallery
235 Upvotes

GNOME still doesn't ship with any kind of clipboard manager. This is a serious shortcoming, as pretty much every modern OS, be it mobile or desktop, offers this functionality. Even Windows!

So I think we should start discussing what an ideal clipboard manager for GNOME would look like and which features it should offer. A well-designed clipboard manager can make everyday work easier for almost any user.

First, let's summarize some basic requirements:

  • Easily accessible from anywhere with a single click or keyboard shortcut.
  • It should be easy to enable and disable.
  • It should integrate naturally into the GNOME workflow.
  • It should manage the primary selection clipboard (when enabled).
  • It should handle passwords securely.
  • Images must be supported.
  • It should support file operations, including copying and pasting files.
  • A keyboard shortcut (e.g. Super+V) should open the clipboard history in a mode where selecting an entry pastes it directly into the active application.

My proposal for the UI:

I imagine a Quick Settings pill with an additional clipboard icon to the left of the dropdown arrow, if the feature is enabled. Clicking the clipboard icon would not only open Quick Settings but also expand the clipboard section.

It would show only the five most recent entries, along with a simple search field. A button at the bottom would open the complete clipboard history in a separate Shell dialog:

Some nice extras could include:

  • If Tesseract is available, offer an option to extract text from an image in the clipboard and copy the result back to the clipboard.
  • Recognize likely passwords, mask them in the history, and automatically remove them after a certain period. (Most likely by supporting clipboard sensitivity metadata and allowing applications to mark entries).
  • Search through older clipboard entries without having to scroll through the entire history.

What do you think?

LLM Assisted Grid-desktop update

No new widgets this time, but lots of polish:

Full Libadwaita: The entire setup now exclusively uses Libadwaita.

Refined Typography & Readability: Adjusted font sizing across the "Quotes", "RSS Feed", and "Today History" widgets for a much cleaner, consistent look on the desktop.

Layout Improvements: Fixed text overlapping issues by optimizing scroll areas where needed (e.g. History), and stripped down the RSS widget to clean headlines that open directly on click.

Grid Customization: Last but not least, the desktop grid size is now fully adjustable.

Thank you for the feedback!

Question I need help

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with GNOME on Fedora, and I'd really appreciate some help fixing it without reinstalling my system or losing any personal data.

System and goal

* OS: Fedora Linux * Desktop environment: GNOME * Display protocol I want to use: Wayland * Display manager: GDM

What happened

My system was booting normally until I attempted to install X11 session components using:

sudo dnf install gnome-session-xsession

After this, my system stopped booting into the graphical desktop. Instead, it gets stuck on a black screen with a single **non-blinking underscore cursor**. The screen becomes completely unresponsive, and I have to reboot.

I originally suspected an X11-related issue, but I want to keep using Wayland.

What I've tried

  1. Booting into text mode by adding the following kernel parameter in GRUB:

    systemd.unit=multi-user.targetThis works, and I can log into a TTY.

  2. Checking installed packages and GNOME session files. The following components were present:

    * `gdm` * `gnome-shell` * `gnome-session` * GNOME and Wayland session files

  3. Reinstalling the following packages:

sudo dnf reinstall gdm gnome-shell gnome-session xorg-x11-server-Xwayland

  1. Testing GNOME Shell directly from the TTY:

gnome-shell --wayland

**This successfully launched the GNOME desktop.** This makes me think that at least part of the graphics stack and GNOME installation is working.

  1. Checking GDM's logs. The previous boot showed repeated errors along the lines of:

    GdmDisplay: Session never registered, failing GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of display failures reached. Giving up.

  2. Checking GDM's configuration and restoring the graphical boot target. GDM is enabled, but the system still freezes at the non-blinking underscore during graphical startup.

Current situation

* I can boot into a TTY using `systemd.unit=multi-user.target`. * GNOME Shell previously launched successfully when run manually with Wayland. * GDM repeatedly fails to register its display session. * Starting GDM manually causes the same black screen with a non-blinking underscore, forcing me to reboot. * I want to restore normal automatic GNOME login using Wayland. * I want to preserve my existing installation, files, and configuration wherever possible.

Is there a safe way to restore the normal GNOME Wayland login without reinstalling Fedora?

I'm happy to provide command output and additional system details. I'd especially appreciate a systematic troubleshooting approach rather than a full reinstall.

Thanks

Fluff Final Look for Adwair Icon Theme

Thanks for all the feedback on Adwair! I’ve spent some more time working on the theme, mostly refining existing icons and making everything feel more consistent.

At this point, I’m happy with how the app icons and device icons turned out. They’re now pretty much how I wanted them to look from the beginning.

There’s still some work left to do on mimetypes, but it’s not a priority for now. Other than that, I don’t have any major changes planned, so I thought I’d share the current look of the theme.

The project is still available here: Adwair

Fluff A Wave of GNOME E-Mail Clients

73 Upvotes

Lately, I’ve noticed the emergence of a large number of email apps written in the GTK4/libadwaita style for GNOME-based desktops. I became curious about their differences, aside from minor variations in the user interface.

I asked Google to compare these clients. Here’s what I got.

Some details may only be clear to technically savvy users. I was advised that Letter is the safest option (in terms of interacting with Yahoo Mail). The closest alternative is Postcard. In my subjective opinion, Postcard and Hylki are the most visually appealing.

It’s also funny that only the developers of Postcard and Hylki took screenshots of their apps that most fully reflect the GNOME philosophy—without window minimize and maximize buttons.

LLM Assisted I created Tablet Center to add Wacom pan/scroll on GNOME Wayland

4 Upvotes

Hi, I created Tablet Center because I wanted pan/scroll with my Wacom on GNOME Wayland, similar to how it works on macOS.

You hold a pen button and drag the tip across the tablet to scroll in any direction, while the cursor stays in place. You can adjust the speed and direction.

I also added pen button settings, pressure adjustment, monitor mapping, ExpressKeys and on-screen menus.

It requires GNOME 48 or later, Wayland and an x86_64 PC. I have tested it with my Intuos S CTL-4100 and would like to know how it works with other Wacom models.

It's open source:
https://github.com/wfpaisa/tablet

If you try it, let me know how it goes. Feedback and bug reports are welcome.

Question Any way to remove the toolbar?

Post image
0 Upvotes

So this is a file manager called Loaf which I found on reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/hyprland/comments/1x8qsra/comment/phn2wqe/?context=3 . This is originally meant for hyprland i believe, but i wanted it on my GNOME desktop, as im very satisfied on how it looks, but there is this bar thing at the top, with the name and 'x' on the top. Is there any way to remove this?
