Welcome to the next challenge in this new series of challenges on r/geocaching. For the introduction to this series, see this post.
Here is challenge 26-08:
Geocaches must be found between October 1 and October 31, 2026 of your local timezone.
All cache finds must be logged online to participate in this challenge.
For one challenge point (CP), find an earthcache on Earthcache Day (October 9-11).
For a second challenge point (CP), find a second earthcache in the month of October.
Bonus Challenge: HIDE an earthcache. We have not hidden any caches for these challenges, and I didn't want to upset the way we had been doing them, so I'm adding a bonus challenge. What the prize(s) might be will depend on how many entries we get. This is just for fun, and will not be included in the overall challenge. It is a bonus challenge.
Additional rules:
All earthcache finds must be active. Archived and disabled caches do not count.

HOW TO RECORD YOUR PARTICIPATION
To record and receive credit for your accomplishment, you must post a top level comment on this thread by October 1st in the following format:
[Geocaching name]If you do not want to use your real GC name, you can use your reddit name, but will not be eligible for prizes if your finds cannot be verified.
[Link to log]The easiest way to do this is to pull up the cache page ongeocaching.comand then click "view log." Then click "share log." Copy that URL and post it here.
If you are going for the second challenge point, you will need to post both GC codes and find URLs. The post will look like this:
This is a relaunch of sorts from challenges that happened on this sub 10 years ago that were run by u/GCbot. This relaunch has been approved by the mods.
Since we are a sub dedicated to geocaching, this will hopefully be a fun way to get members geocaching. Each challenge will last three weeks, and will vary in difficulty. If you choose to participate, you will need to complete the challenge, and then share the information from your log, GC code, and your geocaching name in the comments on that challenge. More information on how to participate will be provided on the first challenge, which will be posted a week from today.
A couple of examples of what a challenge might look like: Find a puzzle cache. Find 5 different cache types. Find a lonely cache (one that has not been found in 6+ months).
All geocache finds will have to happen during the challenge period. No previous finds will count.
I’m still working out the logistics, but there will most likely be eight challenges per series. Participants will accrue points for each completed challenge, and whoever has the most points at the end of the series will win a prize, most likely a trackable. If you would like to donate prizes so we can have more winners, comment below.
If you have some ideas for challenges, please post them below.
Found these (deer?) vertebrae during a search for a forested cache and noticed the spinal cord opening was bison tube-sized. Brought then home, sanitized them and after a couple minutes of filing, it was snug as a bug.
Posting the picture because the other day I saw someone posting on here asking why any Geocache hiders would ever use the “premium only” option when setting up a hide.
Most of my caches are premium only but the few which aren’t are constantly getting taken or destroyed and having to be replaced. And then in the middle of the night some got found by tweens who had just set up geocache profiles that day. Will have to go out and check these today but assuming they won’t have been put back properly (if at all). Think I’m now going to set all my caches to premium only to solve the headaches. Do you have a lot more issues with your non premium caches?
I want to create a series of 6 high difficulty caches (3-5 D rating) with a bonus cache attached to the series. The bonus cache is of around 2 D rating as a hide itself, but what rating should it get given you need to find the rest of the series as a prerequisite?
I was wondering if purchasing premium for Geocaching is worth it. I just started geocaching and I’m really into it, but I’ve already gotten through all the cashes near me that aren’t premium.
I am 164 days into my current streak (yay!) and have begun weighing the benefits of how long to continue. There is a challenge cache near me which requires that your longest streak be longer than your longest slump, so I need at least 327 days for that. At that point, I'm obviously going to keep going until at least 366 days so I have a full year. In my reading about various challenge caches, I saw that there are plenty of requirements for 365/366 days, some 500 days, and at least one for 1095 days (GC2YVG8).
Is anyone aware of any challenges that require you to have more than a 3 year streak? If I manage to make it that long, I want to make sure I fulfill everything I possibly can.
I wanted to share my recent experience with CloudCone to warn the community before anyone else falls for their deceptive practices.
I recently ordered an instance advertised explicitly as a US-located VPS.
When the service was provisioned, I discovered that the assigned IP address is an Anycast/broadcast subnet routed directly through Australia:
I opened a ticket to request a refund or an IP replacement with a genuine US-routed address. Here is CloudCone support's canned response:
Any network admin knows this is pure nonsense:
CloudCone has degraded into taking customer money for misadvertised hardware/networking and hiding behind fake technical excuses to deny refunds.
I am initiating a payment chargeback with my financial provider today. Consider this a warning: stay away from CloudCone if you actually care about IP routing and honest customer service.
I have been caching for 4 years and I have finally hit 420. My next goal is to hit 6,969. If you are wondering how I have gotten so little in four years it is because of my 781 day slump...
I don't understand how to do multi caches. One I'm working on has A-1590 posted as a clue at the first stage. How do I find the coordinates to the second stage? I thought it would be to subtract 1590 from the North and West coordinates of waypoint A but the results do not seem correct (too far away).
I know it may seem obvious to some. I just really want to understand! I keep trying multi caches at parks near me and so far I struggle to find the second stages.
If anyone can suggest how to solve this specific one to help me on my journey or give any advice I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance and sorry if this question is dumb/ not allowed.
Why comparing numbers to others is meaningless, another reason that I feel the more “experienced” you get, the more you just start making sh*t up and playing by your own rules.
I was listening to a podcast where one of the hosts was making the argument, an “unwritten rule”, where if you have a buddy on FaceTime while geocaching, that they can also claim the cache because “they are there”. Just sign the log for them and it counts.
It’s a level of bad faith behavior that I’ve ever heard someone actually say out loud. From “experienced” players, mind you.
Why are we even trying to redefine the most basic requirement? If we can invent exceptions to the fundamental rule whenever we feel like it, what does following the rules even mean anymore?
Between GoogleEarth being phased out, and my general desire to de-google my life, I need to find a new mapping program that will accept my .kmz files. I've spend nearly 2 decades compiling data points on GE and I can't find a decent replacement. If there's an obvious answer or thread I've missed, thank you for pointing me in the right direction!
Designed and built this cache with my stepson (hes 10). Nothing to different from things I have seen before in other places, but our immediate area is in need of more fun caches that are a slight departur from the steadfast ammo cans, and this was a way to get him outside and maybe interested in a tiny that I've enjoyed for a long time. Made from pvc board to eliminate rotting. Gate latch activated by inserting a key card/gift card into the slot to unlock the front. I plan on sanding the front and repainting to keep it plain and inconspicuous. At most, ill paint a geocache logo on it to identify it.
Containers are a used "Tang" powder vessel, and a pill bottle that I plan on cleaning up for log sheet and swag.
Hello. Ive always heard about and watched YouTube videos of geocaching. I seem to understand the concept. Pretty straight forward. But what platform do I use? I think last time I looked its an app i had to pay for?
Today I arrived at a cache where the PETling was put into a tube between two branches.
After I had signed the log book, I wanted to return it, but now there was a mouse sitting on top of the tube. It almost had a look on its tiny little face like it was challenging me lol. Then it disappeared into the tube and I couldn’t put the PETling in again or I would’ve crushed it. So I waited A LONG time. It even came out and looked at me again only to disappear into the tube again. So I gave up and put the container next to the little mouse‘s new home.
Hello! I completed an adventure lab, but could not figure out how to get the correct coordinates for the bonus cache. Any tips on how to get the correct coordinates would be apprecaied! I contacted the cache owner and they claim there is no bonus for the AL.
