Announcement A note on scammers, impersonators, and public blacklists

Hey everyone,

I want to address a recent post I removed by u/NotSUPERita about creating a list of trusted artists and scammers, as well as the broader issue of bad actors on r/gamedevclassifieds.

First, I want to apologize to u/NotSUPERita. I understand why you were trying to help, and I do not think the idea came from a bad place. Scammers and impersonators are a real problem here, and it makes sense that people want better ways to protect themselves and others.

That said, I do not think a public or semi-public user-run blacklist is the right solution.

Any single person’s list of “good” and “bad” experiences is subjective. Even with good intentions, lists like that can be abused, misused, or based on misunderstandings. A false accusation could seriously harm an innocent artist, developer, or freelancer’s reputation and business. Once someone is publicly labeled a scammer, that damage is hard to undo.

This applies to moderators too. Even I am subject to bias, incomplete information, and my own interpretation of events. I cannot be judge, jury, and executioner over someone’s professional reputation, and I do not think anyone else should be put in that position either. That is the line I am trying to be careful with.

I know scammers are a problem, and I am aware that this subreddit has been affected by bad actors, impersonators, and people misrepresenting themselves or their work. But I have not yet found a solution that addresses those issues without also creating a serious risk of innocent people getting caught in the mix.

For now, the best advice is still to do your due diligence before working with someone:

  • Verify that their portfolio actually belongs to them
  • Ask for links to established accounts or websites
  • Check whether their email, Discord, ArtStation, GitHub, itch, LinkedIn, or other profiles line up
  • Be cautious with new accounts, vague portfolios, stolen-looking portfolios, or people who avoid verification
  • Use contracts, milestones, and payment methods that offer some protection
  • Do not rely only on someone’s Reddit username or a single message thread

I know that is not a perfect answer. It is a frustrating situation, and I understand why people want something stronger. But asking people to do their homework before hiring or accepting work is better than creating a system where someone’s business can be damaged because they were falsely added to a list.

If there is a better way to handle this that protects people from scammers without turning into public reputation policing or false callouts, I am open to hearing it. Any solution needs to be fair, evidence-based, and careful about the harm it could cause.

Edit: I forgot to add one more important point: any solution also cannot require a heavy amount of moderator time.

Running this job board is not a job. No one on the mod team has the time, or realistically should be expected to have the time, to manually verify users, assign trusted labels, maintain reputation lists, or act as an ongoing approval system for freelancers and clients.

That kind of system would create a lot of work, and it would also create a false sense of safety. Even with moderation, users would still need to verify who they are working with and make their own judgment before hiring, accepting work, or sending payment.

Community-Wide Alert: Do not engage with P1 GAMES (Formerly P1 VIRTUAL CIVILIZATION)

I'm truly getting tired of this nonsense u/RedEagle_MGN

Changing your organizations name doesn't stop people from reaching out to me with horror stories every few months.

What they want you to sign:

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THESE PEOPLE, no matter what they call themselves. They exploit the inexperienced and naive, convincing you to sign away your rights to everything you create. Don’t fall for their lies. You do not need to join a volunteer group or give up ownership of your work to gain skills in the game industry. Learning on your own is far better than what P1 offers. If you want a real education, seek out accredited programs and courses instead.

Their latest tactic is using LinkedIn ads to lure victims. I’m unsure what it will take to stop this con artist, but I’ll do my part to be a thorn in their side. My goal is to protect people in this community from their schemes.

Spread the word, be safe.

PAID - 3D Modeler | Animation [PAID] Looking for a 3D Modeler for a Low-Poly Fantasy RPG

I'm looking to hire a 3D modeler for my RPG project in Unreal Engine 5.

Work needed:

Base Character

  • 1 low-poly stylized character with a plain shirt, pants, boots, and hair.
  • 3 hair variations.

Bronze Armor Set

  • 1 chestplate and pauldron set.
  • 1 variation of the chestplate and pauldrons.
  • 1 set of platelegs.
  • 1 variation of the platelegs.
  • 1 set of plate boots
  • 1 set of plate gauntlets
  • 2 helmet variations.

The models should have a classic MMORPG look with a slightly more modern, stylized low-poly aesthetic.

The assets are intended for Unreal Engine 5, so experience creating game-ready models and modular armor is preferred. Rigging and compatibility with the UE5 mannequin can also be discussed.

Budget: $700 to $1,000 USD.

Please share your portfolio, estimated cost, and timeline if interested. Thanks!

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [PAID] Character (Knight) Sprite for a 32x32 Pixel Art JRPG Roguelite, like Final Fantasy

Thank you to the artists who reached out last time and helped me with updating my tile sets!

I will only be responding to people who comment on this post, because last time I got so many people in my DMs selling AI art and I already lost money on some of them.

I am looking for an artist to help with making the sprite work in my game space, with initial sketches, south facing sprite, then we move on to idle and move animations if possible.

The sprite will probably end up being about 22x50 or around there. Maybe similar style to Sea of Stars sprites with more rounded features.

I am happy to work closely with you on this!

(Potentially long-term partner for other character sprites)

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [PAID] Looking for a cute and cozy isometric artist for a "sticker scene" style game

Please DM me instead of leaving a comment.

Hi All,

I am working on a new cute and cozy game in the vain of the Sticker Scene style books, and I am looking for an artist that can help not only make the actual art, but help develop the style and look of the game.

I've already built a prototype that I am happy with, but it's using my own questionable art. So I'd like to take it to the next level and see if it's viable as an actual game.

Here is the book I'm referencing as I build the game. Not the style specifically, but the general layout, isometric view, the density of the stickers, and the amount of stickers and interactions. Little stories etc.

https://a.co/d/0ftJM09D (There are many out there obviously.)

So here is what I am looking for:

-An artist that can draw polished cute and cozy isometric scenes. Preferably with an interesting take on what cozy means

-A dense number of stickers that fit perfectly into those scenes (I can explain how the production art needs to be delivered)

-Some level of animating would be preferred as well but not mandatory.

-Absolutely no AI. I want real art and you might be asked to prove it's not AI.

-A big bonus will be someone that has made similar things before.

This is a paid commission that I would love to turn into a LOT of paid commissions or even a partnership. But first let's get one scene made and see how fun it is.

If you are interested, please send me a DM along any relevant portfolio pieces, a little bit about yourself, and your rates.

Thanks!

PAID - Musician [PAID] Looking for a few songs for game!

Hey everyone! I'm an indie game developer working on a Tetris-like roguelike, and I'm looking for someone to work with on the music for my game. I'm looking for at least two songs, possibly more, but if you'd rather just work on one, that's totally fine too! I'm hoping for electronic music with a similar feel to Tetris, but without being too retro-sounding. I'm also working with a pretty small budget, and I don't need an exclusive license, so I'm open to figuring something out that works for both of us. As an indie dev myself, I'd love to give other indie creators a chance to do what they love and get their work out there! If you're interested, feel free to reach out! I'd love to hear any questions you have, and portfolios or examples of music you've worked on would be awesome.

I'm working in GameMaker and can us MP3, OGG or WAV, I'm also not working on a tight time schedule or anything!

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [PAID] 2D top-down artist for a turn-based nation sim: city progression sets, military units + animations, trains and bridges (paid, quote your rate)

Hi all, I’m Robert from Circa Games, a two-person indie studio. We’re building NationBuilder ‘27, a turn-based nation-building sim set in the real world of 2026. You found a nation from scratch and govern it as the state across 75 years and four eras. The Steam page goes live at the end of this year; first playtest in February 2027.

The map is a flat top-down hex map with a realistic terrain surface and a dark, serious modern UI. No tilt, no isometric. I’m looking for an artist to produce the top-down sprite assets that sit on that map. Modern-day setting that matches our map design, grounded rather than cartoony.

Style references:

These are my roughs/placeholders. Don't laugh.
These are my roughs/placeholders. Don't laugh.

Scope

  1. Settlement progression art. Four tiers, each with its own district set: Settlement > Town > City > Metropolis. The idea is that a settlement visibly grows through these stages, so the four tiers need to read as one continuous place getting bigger, not four unrelated sprites. Roughly 3 district types per tier ([examples: residential, industrial, port, government, etc.]), estimated 12 pieces total.
  2. Military assets. Top-down unit sprites ([list: tanks, artillery, drones, fighters, bombers, missile launchers, air defense, etc.]), each with idle/move animation, plus a small set of explosion and impact effects. Estimated 17 units, 4 effects.
  3. Infrastructure. Bridges (road and rail, 2 variants) and trains (3 types), with looping movement animations for the trains.

Icons and all other UI are handled in-house, so this is purely the on-map art.

Technical

  • Engine: Electron + React (web stack).
  • Deliverables as PNG sprite sheets with frame data (JSON or similar), plus layered source files (PSD/Krita/Aseprite, whatever you work in).
  • Export static assets at 2x the target on-map size so they survive zoom. I’ll supply the hex dimensions, a map screenshot at working zoom, and the existing palette.
  • Animations as frame sequences: 12 fps for everything except explosions, and 24 fps for explosions.

Budget and terms

I’m posting mainly to understand who does this kind of work and what it costs, so please quote your rate (per asset, per set, or a project estimate) rather than me guessing. Happy to start with a paid test piece (one district tier or one unit) before committing to the full set.

Timeline: first batch (settlement tiers) wanted by 2/1/26, the rest by 4/1/26. Flexible if the fit is right.

To apply

Comment or DM with:

  • Portfolio, ideally with top-down or strategy-game work
  • Your rate and rough estimate for the scope above
  • Availability over the next 7 months

Thanks for reading. Our community is at r/NationBuilderGame if you want to see what the game looks like.

FOR HIRE - 3D Modeler | Animation Looking for a horror character 3D artist (realism) [PAID]

Post image
20 Upvotes

I'm looking to commission a realistic 3D character artist to create humanoid horror characters for my upcoming game.

I'm aiming for something inspired by the disturbing character designs seen in games like Outlast, but pushed further toward the more extreme and unsettling aesthetic of Silent Hill: Townfall. Ideally, something that falls somewhere between the two.

No rigging or animation is required, only the 3D character models.

I'm looking for an artist who would be available to collaborate starting in early 2027.

If you're interested, feel free to reach out with your portfolio and commission rates!

The uploaded picture is an early environment test because seeing the game itself to get the vibe makes it easier to explain.

PAID - 3D Modeler | Animation [Hiring] Looking for a 3D artist for early 2000s to 2010 style characters

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a 3D artist to create one or more character models in an early-to-late 2000s / early 2010s style, similar to the look of Dragon Age: Origins. The project is a 3D game made in Unity.

Ideally, the characters should have facial expressions, so the models need to be able to convey emotion.

This is open to everyone: professionals, students, and passionate hobbyists are all welcome. If you're interested, please share your portfolio and your rates (or your budget expectations, if you're a student or doing this for a passion project).

I really like getting to know the people I work with, so feel free to tell me a bit about yourself and your background in your reply. I always appreciate the work and creativity of artists, and I'm grateful to anyone who takes the time to reach out.

Thanks, and looking forward to hearing from you!

PORTFOLIO [Unpaid Collaboration] Looking for artists interested in building a small productivity app together!

Hey everyone!

I'm a student and indie developer working on a small passion project, and I'd love to collaborate with artists who might be interested in bringing it to life!

A little about the project:

It's a simple social focus app designed for students. Think of it as studying together with your friends, but without the distractions.

You start a focus timer, take breaks whenever needed (which don't count toward your focus time), and your friends get notified when you start and finish studying. Once you're done, they can send you little messages of encouragement called kudos.

The goal is to make studying feel a little less lonely while keeping the experience productive and distraction-free.

Why I'm looking for artists:

Although the app will primarily focus on productivity, I'd love to give it a little personality through artwork, charming characters, and thoughtfully designed UI elements.

I'm not aiming for something overly decorative or distracting. The idea is to create a clean, functional interface with subtle cute details that make the app feel welcoming and enjoyable to use.

I'm looking for artists who'd enjoy contributing to the app's visual identity, including buttons, icons, characters, illustrations, and other UI elements.

You don't need professional experience! Beginners, hobbyists, and anyone who simply enjoys creating art are welcome. You don't need to know anything about app development either. We can figure things out together!

A few important things:

  • This is a completely unpaid, volunteer-based passion project.
  • Development will take time since I'm working on it independently while also balancing my studies.
  • There are no strict deadlines or expectations of professional-level work.
  • You'll receive credit for your contributions, and we'll agree on how your artwork can be used before starting.

I'd love for this to be a genuine collaboration where we can exchange ideas, experiment, and create something we're proud of.

If you're interested, feel free to comment or DM me! I'd love to see your artwork and hear your ideas.

Thanks for reading!
