Fun fact: Swearing when in pain increases your tolerance by 33%, but only if you don't do it daily

In Keele University ice-water trials, people repeating a swear word endured acute pain 33% longer than those repeating neutral words.

Profanity originates subcortically in the basal ganglia, triggering stress-induced hypoalgesia that dampens spinal pain gates. However, daily habitual swearers get little to no relief—the brain requires the emotional taboo shock to fire the analgesic response.

Fun fact: If you consistently wake up 2 minutes before your alarm, your brain is doing it on purpose to protect you from shock

• Upvotes

Your brain's central clock (the suprachiasmatic nucleus) hates the sudden cardiovascular jolt caused by an alarm clock.

When you maintain a consistent routine, your internal circadian timer predicts your schedule. About an hour before your expected wake time, it triggers the "Cortisol Awakening Response" (CAR)—gradually elevating core body temperature and blood pressure so you awaken naturally right before the alarm sounds.

Fun fact: Swearing when you hurt yourself increases your pain tolerance by roughly 33%, but only if you don't swear habitually

In Keele University cold-pressor trials, participants repeating an expletive while holding their hands in near-freezing ice water lasted roughly 33% longer and reported significantly less pain compared to repeating neutral words.

Neurolinguistically, profanity bypasses standard cortical grammar centers (Broca's area) and detonates from subcortical motor circuits in the basal ganglia, triggering "stress-induced hypoalgesia" that blunts pain signals at the spinal cord.

The catch: people who swear daily in everyday conversation get almost zero analgesic benefit—the brain requires the emotional taboo shock to fire the descending pain shield.

Fun fact: Stone Phallus From the Upper Palaeolithic Raises Questions About Prehistoric Sexuality

Post image
4 Upvotes

One famous prehistoric phallic object comes from Hohle Fels Cave in Germany and dates to approximately 28,000 years ago. Made from stone and shaped like a penis, it is often described in popular media as the world's oldest dildo. However, its precise purpose is unknown and it may have had symbolic, ritual or practical uses, and its shape alone cannot establish that it was used for sexual stimulation.

No such inscription ever existed. Sensationalist journalists fabricated the curse after financial backer Lord Carnarvon died from an infected mosquito bite four months after the 1922 discovery. Scientific studies later showed that people who visited the excavation did not have a higher risk of early death

Fun fact: Hiccups are literally an evolutionary leftover from when our ancestors had gills 300 million years ago.

Hiccups aren't a random glitch; they’re the exact primitive reflex ancient tadpoles used to push water through their gills without letting it into their lungs.

Our brainstem never deleted the circuit, so whenever the phrenic nerve gets irritated, your body basically tries to breathe like an ancient amphibian.

Found this evolutionary breakdown hilarious: https://www.oddlyclear.com/why-do-we-hiccup/

Fun fact: Around 25% of people sneeze when stepping into bright sunlight, and it's an inherited glitch called ACHOO syndrome

It’s caused by optical nerve signals accidentally "bleeding" into the adjacent trigeminal nerve that controls nasal reflexes. Our brains basically confuse bright light with something tickling the nose.

Found the neurological explanation behind the reflex here:

Fun fact! Did you know all apples grown came from one tree example example: granny Smith 1864 that same tree is the same tree now all over. Grafting is the only way. Click below learn more!

First off this group requires Fun Fact in title I thought this would be a more amusing way of saying it.👇

Lend me thine ear, for I have a fact to reveal.

Did you know that if you or anyone has an any type of apple on earth, and plants the seeds from it they will never get the same apple. Yup, it's always going to be different and very high chance that it's will be worse than the seeds u used from the apple.. Imagine planting and waiting so long for it to give apples and its not good.

So, people use grafting to get apple is the only way to get the same apple all the time.

Here is the fun part. So I'll mention 2 types common apples; The Honeycrisp (1960 Minnesota), and Granny Smith (1868 Australia) both came from seedlings. And from that seedling to all the honeycrisp and a granny Smith apples came from that same tree by grafting the original one.

Grafting has been around Estimated 3000 years and archeological evidence was found 1000 years ago.
