Software Submission Bytescape: a free (MIT) treemap disk space analyzer for macOS, Windows and Linux

• Upvotes

Bytescape is a free software (MIT) disk space analyzer for macOS, Windows and Linux. It scans a folder or a whole drive, draws it as a treemap, and lets you move the big stuff to Trash without leaving the app. It runs fully locally: no accounts, no telemetry, and nothing about your files leaves your machine.

  • Treemap and simple views, with sizes that update live while it scans
  • Sizes are space on disk, and on macOS a scan of / counts firmlinked folders once
  • Cleanup only pre-selects things that rebuild themselves (old node_modules, git-ignored build output, Xcode/Gradle/npm caches). Duplicates (checked byte for byte), old archives and logs are listed for review. App data, hidden folders and cloud-synced folders are never suggested
  • Move to Trash with a 6 second undo
  • Optional read-only MCP endpoint for AI agents (metadata only, never file contents)

Software Submission I built an offline, encrypted alternative to WAMR/Notisave for recovering deleted messages (no internet permission, no ads)

Apps like WAMR, Notisave, and Auto RDM are useful for recovering deleted messages, but there's a privacy problem I couldn't ignore.

To work, they need notification access, which means they can read everything: bank OTPs, 2FA codes, private chats, emails. Most of them also request the INTERNET permission, so your notification data is one network call away from a third-party server.

So I built MsgVault to fix that.

What's different:

- No internet permission at all. The manifest doesn't declare android.permission.INTERNET, so Android's sandbox stops the app from sending data over the network. You can verify this in App Info.

- Encrypted storage. Messages are stored in an AES-256 SQLCipher database, with the key tied to the Android Hardware KeyStore.

- No ads, no trackers, no paywalls. No AdMob, AppLovin, or analytics SDKs. Lightweight background service.

- Instagram Reel recovery. When someone unsends a Reel, other apps just show "Shared a reel". MsgVault extracts the Reel shortcode so you can open the exact Reel in Instagram with one tap.

- Media recovery for modern Android (10-15). It captures the image from the notification itself, streams MediaStore data into the vault, and watches for late downloads for up to 30 seconds.

- In-app lock. Biometric/PIN lock plus FLAG_SECURE (blocks screenshots and blurs the recents preview).

Limitations:

- Like any notification-based app, it can only recover what shows up in a notification. Messages deleted before they arrive, or while notifications are muted/blocked, can't be recovered.

- No internet permission means no cloud backup or sync, by design.

I'd love feedback, especially on media capture and what features you'd want next. Happy to answer any questions about how it works.

Anyone can open a PR. That used to be open source’s superpower. Now it’s becoming its biggest headache.

Low-quality AI-generated PRs are flooding projects, and volunteer maintainers are paying the price.

Here are a few practical ways to keep AI slop under control.
