Just a heads up to all CFAA registered techs. Got an email from the CFAA this morning warning that Jackie Jones, the lady who handles all things technician related at the head office had her email hacked.

Proud Enthusiast Need help ID’ing flush mount

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi all! This is my former elementary schools FACP, a newer Simplex 4006. The school was built in 1982, and I am assuming that the flush mount is original to the OG panel that was here. I’d like to know if any of you would be able to tell me which panel that the flush mount would’ve went with? Only hints I have so far are a simplex 4207/8 era annunciatior in the room over and all the pulls are 4251-30s w/ break glass plates. I’m guessing it wasn’t one of those panels though as the mount is wider than it is tall, kind of mimicking the shape of a 2001. Notification appliances were replaced at some point with SpectrAlert Classics. No clue what they were originally. Any help is help!

Discussion How much does working in FA vary based on state?

I’ve lived in Texas my whole life, always worked in the FA industry and want to continue doing so. I love my job, and no matter what company I’ve worked for, all my coworkers/bosses have had a “we might get mad at each other, but we’re family” mindset.

Thing is, I’d really like to move somewhere northwest (like Washington or Oregon), but part of me wonders how different the industry is up there.

So for those who’ve worked in multiple states, would you say the culture, codes, etc. vary a lot based on where you are? Or is it pretty much the same across USA?

Hi I hope everyone’s weekend is going good. Has anyone seen an old Autocall Autocommand 1 or 2 in the field. I can barely find any information on the old original Autocall panels. Have a nice day.

Just wondering if anyone knows how to get the smokes to come in quicker? They take 2-3 mins to come in once tested. I am not familiar with siemans panels or equipment. But the guys who manage the building said there is a way to change that. Just wondering if anyone can help me out with some information. Thanks!!

Discussion Finding Intermittent Ground Faults?

Do you guys have any tricks for finding intermittent ground faults besides the usual stuff (splitting circuit in half, metering to ground, that sort of thing) I have one that I can't find for the life of me at a large project with a Notifier panel.

It is on a SLC loop (this place has 9 loops) with approximately 250 devices on the loop. The ground fault comes in for 1 second and then clears immediately, returning a couple seconds later or 45 minutes later.

Customer’s complaining about a faint static noise coming from the speaker device. You have to actually get on a ladder and place your ear directly on the device to hear it. Anyone have an idea what’s causing this and/or how to fix it??

Sorry for the blurry photo. Was inspecting a building, and I could not remove these oldies from their bases to short them to save my life.

I believe it’s an Edwards of sorts?

New Installation Question for the design nerds

Post image
10 Upvotes

Got a project Im bidding that if I close I’ll also be doing the drawings on. There’s an area in the building that has a vaulted ceiling that runs down then levels out. See the attached pic. The room is <900sf. Do I treat the level ceilings as separate rooms even though they will fall within the 15’ measurements from the detector at the peak? Im leaning towards yes. There’s no AHJ so I can’t bounce this off them. TIA!

Discussion Low Profile Ratcheting Screwdriver Suggestions

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good low profile, preferably ratcheting, screwdriver? I just lost this one and it was alright, but you pretty much had to use two hands to use it, which isn't always possible on the terribly located duct detectors I need one for. I previously had this one, but it would switch directions too easily, which was annoying.

Discussion Elevator shunt trip

I have been in the industry for a long time. But recently the requirements for elevator shunt trips and devices allowed in hoist ways have been changing.

We have always used pit heats for shunt trip, but now I am getting mixed messaging from inspectors. Some say the pit must activate the shunt trip and some say it must not activate the shunt trip. I am losing it here! I have read up in NFPA 72, NFPA 101 & IBC. I cannot find anything that states 1 or the other. I do not have access to ASME 17.1. Anyone have an answer using any of the codes?
