Identifying and Authenticating Your Fender Guitar

Few guitar brands are as iconic and revered as Fender. For collectors, enthusiasts, and musicians alike, one of the key elements in understanding and appreciating a Fender guitar is knowing its authenticity, model, and age. Fortunately, there are a lot of good resources to assist you in that endeavor, albeit with some caveats.

Official Fender Serial Number Lookup: An Authoritative Resource?

Fender's official serial number lookup tool (https://serialnumberlookup.fender.com/lookup/) is the primary reference point for deciphering the origins of a Fender guitar. However, it's essential to approach this resource with a critical eye. While it offers valuable insights, there are notable gaps in the records, and discrepancies may arise. Guitars with known provenance occasionally deviate from the database, listing differences in paint and components. Nonetheless, it remains a fundamental starting point for identifying Fender instruments.

Supplementary Serial Number Model Information

In addition to Fender's official resource, several other reliable sources offer further insights into decoding serial numbers and understanding Fender guitar models.

Websites like Superior Music (https://www.superiormusic.com/page201.htm),

Strat Central (https://www.strat-central.com/external/datingfender.htm),

True Vintage Guitar (https://truevintageguitar.com/blogs/tvg-blog/fender-serial-numbers),

Reverb (https://reverb.com/news/how-to-date-a-fender),

and Andy Baxter Bass (https://www.andybaxterbass.com/blogs/news/fender-serial-number-guide) provide valuable guides and articles on the subject. These resources offer a comprehensive overview, filling in the gaps left by Fender's official database.

Exploring Stratocaster and Telecaster Models and Specifications

For those specifically interested in Fender Stratocasters, resources like Fuzzfaced (https://www.fuzzfaced.net/fender-stratocaster-models.html) offer detailed examinations of various models and their specifications. From vintage classics to modern iterations, understanding the evolution of the Stratocaster can deepen one's appreciation for these iconic guitars.

Likewise, Fender Telecasters have undergone significant evolution over the years. Fuzzfaced's exploration of Telecaster parts (https://www.fuzzfaced.net/telecaster-parts.html) sheds light on the changes in design and construction that have shaped this beloved instrument.

Original Fender Stratocaster Wiring Diagrams

For those interested in the technical aspects of Fender guitars, original wiring diagrams provide invaluable insight into their inner workings and can help to provide those final critical details in authenticating or dating your guitar.

Websites like Guitar Electronics (https://guitarelectronics.com/original-fender-stratocaster-wiring-diagrams/) show the various wiring schemes and components used in Fender Stratocasters over time.

General Discussion Fender Layoffs coming

Saw some news that Fender submitted a warn notice that they plan to layoff 533 employees from the Corona site. Feel bad for those affected, and wondering how much is overall economy-driven vs how much is self-inflicted from the bad publicity of the past year’s litigation efforts.

New Guitar Day! NGD - Player II Precision Bass

I recently got a tone master pro and an FR-12 so I didn’t have to lug the big expensive box of glass tube amp, cabinet, and pedalboard to a friend’s place once a week and I saw that it had bass presets and whatnot. I was like, “How convenient! I don’t want to buy a bass amp, but I’ve always wanted to learn bass.” Unfortunately, I was one bass short of being able to learn bass. No more - this is my Player II Modified Precision Bass. It looks so cool and I’m looking forward to becoming the world’s shittiest bassist.

I was torn between the Precision Bass and a Mustang PJ but this yellow was too sharp.

Another used “what happened to this guitar’s finish?” situation.

Is this a terrible home relic job? Or did someone put the strat too close to a furnace? Anyway, it’s at a Guitar Center in Pasadena Texas.

Questions and Advice Is there supposed to be protective film?

Thumbnail

I just got a fender 75th anniversary American professional telecaster cabronita from a retailer. The ice blue one. And I noticed some scratches(picture 1 and 2) and even a little dent (picture 3) on the backplate, that white area at the back. And the screw might be a little loose(picture 4)? Is there supposed to be protective film or something? Are these scratches and the dent normal?

Thanks in advance!

update: thanks for all the replies! I doubted if this was a floor model at first but it came with a strong paint smell. If it was a floor model, wouldn’t the smell already be gone?

update again: I took the screws out as u/havelostcount suggested in the comment and it turned out the backplate was indeed on backwards, and there is a protective film on the other side. Is this a factory mistake or what happened…

Hi everyone, I was designing guitars on the Fender Mod Shop the other day and, well, these are what I came up with. But now I’m not sure which one to buy... I play pretty much every genre of music, but often funk and funk-rock-style stuff... which one would be best suited for that? Thx for your help <3

General Discussion Tonemaster Twin Deluxe Reverb

About two weeks ago I bought this amp. Let me say from the beginning that I love tube amps, have played them all my career, and own about 30.

I purchased this amp for a few reasons, one of them being how light the amp is. I am getting older and just can’t lug around 50-85 pound amps anymore. This thing is forgivingly light. It’s easy to get from the truck to the stage. My back thanks me.

How does it sound? In a word, fantastic. Does it completely match the sound of a tube Twin? No, but the difference is so small it’s negligible. Cleans are pristine, the digital reverb sounds good, and the trem/vibrato sounds excellent. It sounds great at 1 watt, it sounds great at the full 200 watts.

It plays nice with pedals. Overdrives and fuzz sound just fine. Modulations sound great. I run a compressor at the start of my chain and it sweetens up everything nicely.

My gigging guitars are a Gibson ‘61 standard SG and a Fender American Special Strat. Sometimes a Yamaha Revstar.

If you need a good, loud amp that can do both the stage and the bedroom with ease, try one out.
