A couple of times now, I have seen people filling their vehicle with gas, while the car is still running. Is this safe? To me this is super dangerous but maybe I am wrong? Very curious.

I am voting today and have clear choices across the ballot with the exception of DDSB trustees. I have found paragraphs from each, but to be honest, none of them really stand out. I'd like to make an informed choice - is there any other info out there?
If it helps, I want more support for teachers, more support for students with needs and am sick of the cuts from the Ford government. I am not interested in candidates that are too far left or too far right...

Hi all! I’ve just moved to Pickering, and I’m looking for informal knitting groups and knit nights. I’m an experienced knitter and pretty chill, and I love Stich n Bitch sessions! Does anyone know of anything?

Recently moved to Ajax and I am looking for daycare options that don’t have thousands of families on their waitlists. We were looking for a Montessori but looks like those all have waitlists too. Feeling stuck.
Interested in toddler programs for Summer/September 2027.
EDIT: Thank you everyone for the suggestions! Will look into all of them. Appreciate the advice.

Hey everyone,
My partner and I kept ending up at the same coffee shop every Saturday, so I started building short local loops around Durham just to get us out of the house. A few spots that kept landing on those routes:
Camp X / Intrepid Park and the Lakeview Waterfront Trail (Whitby/Oshawa border). In 1941 this was a top-secret WWII spy training school. The buildings were later bulldozed. Walk past the monument through the trees and it opens onto a bluff and pebble beach along Lake Ontario.
Thickson Point / Darlington Bluffs. Easy to miss from the 401, and a good lookout over the lake.
Bean & Basket Cafe, Ajax. Order the maple latte, iced if it’s warm out — it’s the drink regulars keep naming, and it’s not overly sweet.
I turned the same idea into an app called Clu Trips: you pick walking or driving, a budget, and a few vibes, and it gives you a 3-stop loop where each place stays hidden until you arrive. The first trip or two are free and don’t need a card. If you try one around Durham, I’d like to know whether the clues feel fair, and I’m collecting hidden gems so the routes don’t skip them.

Hello, a bit of a strange request. We got this catalogue the last 2 years, but it looks like we aren't getting it this year. My mom received one but she's closer to Ottawa.
My daughter wants to look through to select her toys.
So if anyone has one they're looking to part with, please let me know. Thank you!

I'm in my late 30s and feel like I have a lot going for me, but I am unable to be happy and need help. Really struggling with my mental health and dreading the upcoming winter when it always gets worse.
I have tried a couple of therapists over the years and none have really worked for me. I am open to trying out others, but I have to be realistic about cost as well. Then again, it's an investment into myself and my family so it is worth it. I am a busy dad to a 4 year-old and don't get enough time or energy to go work out, as much as I'd like to.
Does anyone have a therapist they'd recommend? Or at least know where to start looking? Previously, I just worked with someone through my work benefits and then also through the Gestalt institute. I am open to both virtual and in-person.

Hi everyone, new to Brooklin and looking for a plumber to take out an older laundry room basin with taps and add a newer cleaner version with taps. The old one is a base plastic laundry tub with copper fittings.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx

My full response which this group edited and posted as my response when it wasn't. Candidiates should also check theirs, here is my full reply before they changed it.
Good evening Harpreet
Thank you for reaching out with this important question regarding the role of generative AI and LLMs in our public education system.
As you are aware rapid advances in technology present both opportunities and serious risks that school board governance must address with caution, safeguards, and clear ethical boundaries.
I take a cautious, regulated, and human first stance on AI in our schools. While AI is here and will advance at unseen speeds over the next decade AI tools can assist educators with routine admin tasks, or serve as supplemental learning aids under strict supervision, technology must never be allowed to replace our foundational learning, critical thinking or human interaction in the classroom.
Below are my key principles regarding AI in the Durham District School Board
AI must never become a shortcut that undermines fundamental literacy, numeracy and independent critical thinking skills. Work submitted by students must be a representation of their own original thought, research and analysis.
Over reliance on automated tools risks cognitive offloading and weakening of basic problem solving abilities and I fully believe that teacher led instruction and traditional assessment methods must remain paramount.
Generative AI models are prone to hallucinations and to perpetuate societal and racial biases inherent in training datasets, and can present unverified information as fact.
Students must be taught digital literacy and learning how to question, verify and evaluate AI generated outputs rather than accepting them passively.
Student exposure to digital tools must be age appropriate, balanced with mental health awareness, and monitored to avoid negative impacts on student well being. Under no circumstances should personal identifiable information of our students or our staff be inputted into unauthorized or open source AI models.
I also support strict adherence to the DDSB’s Technology approval process and AI guidelines ensuring that only board approved & vetted tools complying with privacy legislation are utilized. AI should only augment administrative efficiency under human oversight and never be allowed to make autonomous decisions regarding student assessments, discipline, or resource allocation.
School boards must remain mindful of the broader social and environmental impacts of technology infrastructure, including data center expansion concerns raised by other local municipalities.
Responsible digital use involves teaching our students not only how technology works, but also the real world ethical, environmental and social implications of its use.
Thank you for maintaining this election tracker and for bringing these critical technology governance issues to the public conversation.
Warm regards
Jim Van Allen
Candidate for School Board Trustee, Oshawa (DDSB)
