Question How much harder is college percussion than highschool percussion

I’m a high school senior that just swapped to percussion for my last year (I was playing sousaphone.) I’ve only really played mallet percussion and bass drum, with a small amount of quads and snare just so I could get the basics.

I’m still debating whether or not I want to keep doing percussion for college marching band or go back to lowbrass, because there are auditions (though I heard they’re not hard) and I also don’t want to play bass drum for all of college due to not being as good on snare or quads. I can play our high schools cadence and show music on snare and quads, and but im not sure how much harder college music is. Any tips are also appreciated!

To be tagged... What snare drum do I have and what could it be worth?

Parents cleaning out garage, and gave me a snare drum my sibling got from high school marching band days. No one wants it, and if i'm honest with myself, I'm not going to learn/use it any time soon. Instruments in my day were always worth something, so i figure i might as well sell it if it's worth it.

How can i figure out what 'model' it is, and for those that would know, what would be the most you figured anyone would actually pay for this?

Any help is appreciated.

Hey all! I’m looking into getting my own marching snare drum aside from the one I currently have. I was wondering if anyone has one for sale of the following two for reasonable prices. I’m a high school teen looking to expand my playing past it. I’ve attached photos of the two I’m mainly looking at. Hopefully 14x12!

Discussion Pearl QC gone down?

Hey all, this is mainly a discussion and I wanted to get some other people’s opinions on this.

Last year, my school bought us a new Drumline: A set of Pearl Championship Maple drums. These included 6 snares, and 5 basses. Since then, we have had numerous issues with these drums, especially with their durability. We have had two snare throwoffs break, hardware rusting out, and carrier mounts fail.

Now, before I get a million comments saying how this is probably not a reflection of the drums, and is a reflection of the drumline. We take very good care of these drums. If it rains, we leave them out to dry, and wipe them off. Before every game, I will personally tune every single drum. We also ordered another snare for this season early this year, it was originally supposed to be delivered in August, but still isn’t here. Our directors are both very displeased with the performance of our drums.

Has anyone had any similar experiences? We are borrowing a late 90s ffx for the snare that doesnt have a new drum, and that drum feels significantly beefier and durable. Is something happening with pearl? I’m not a big Pearl guy, but our drumline director is a big fan of Pearl. Should we have looked at other brands, such as mapex or Yamaha? Or maybe even Ludwig and Dynasty?

This mainly a discussion post, and I want to get some feedback from some people who know more than I do. Also, I know how to tune drums, I work on vintage marching snare drums/drums in general as a hobby.

Question Private Lessons

Hi everyone, I have been asked by some people to do lessons. I am 18 and my marching experience is limited to high school, but I have picked up a teaching job at a fairly competitive high school in my state. I believe I can teach fine but I don’t know where to start with lesson plans. Also what prices should I start charging at? I want to use the money from lessons for tour fees and my musical endeavors. But I don’t want to charge an unfair price. Looking for any tips and advice I can get.

Question Bracket for attaching spock drum to front drums? Yamaha Field Corps tenors

Post image
5 Upvotes

I picked my son up an older set of Yamaha Field Corps tenors with a stand and carrier. He bought a new carrier off a bandmate, but the spock drum mount is in the way since it is attached to the tenor frame. His setup is exactly like this pic. We want to mount the spock to the front drums, but I'm not finding a bracket for this. Everything I've come across is no longer available.

Does anyone know where I can find the bracket we need to move the spock?

Question Does anyone have a marching snare cover that fits a 13x11?

Hi. I have a Yamaha 13x11 marching snare drum that I bought from Guitar Center not too long ago and I may bring it outside occasionally so I want a cover for it.

I have looked up the cover for my exact model but it was sold out.

Does anyone happen to have a cover for my exact model (SNC13) or anything similar? Thanks in advance!

Discussion Equipment Advice

Hey guys!

My director recently approached me about some equipment for next year, and I wanted your advice.

Currently, we use Pearl's CarbonCore FFX drums (currently around six years old, got during Covid). We use Evans hybrid heads with the bottom MX5's. Our tenors use the Evans TCX heads, and basses use Remo PowerMax's (all drums use white heads, besides tenors, which are clear, besides the two spocks).

I'm kind of thinking of recommending the following:

  1. Snares: Remo Black Max and Clear Ambassador and maybe utilizing a sound projector on each drum (scoop)

  2. Tenors: Remo Clear Pinstripes

  3. Basses: Remo ebony PowerMax's 2

Any advice, thoughts, comments? I want our snares to have a higher/wetter snare sound.

One of the bass drummers at the school owns a crap ton of these. Never seen em before, they have plain Vic branding, so that’s all I know.
They’re quite hefty tho and they sound pretty nice without being to chunky in the hand.
They also look fairly new, 0 dents and don’t have much of any darkening on the from use or gripping.

Question Do marching snares explode when they get wet????

Dude, I heard a long time ago that marching snares can explode when they get wet. Since then I’ve always believed it because I swore I heard about it online and from some upperclassman when I first joined hs band. I brought it up and my grandpa who’s a musician called me crazy and I was like “no they really do explode” but when I looked it up for proof there’s nothing about them exploding. Was this just some sort of lie all along 😭

Question Parade soon, must rest!

Hello all, just here to ask if there's any tips about physical health for parades.

I have a parade on Friday, and I march tenors. I am above average strength for people my age, and haven't had problems before, but this last rehearsal, I got a killer knot in my back. What can I do to properly heal and rest for parade day?

Thanks for the read.

Question Should I audition for bass drum in our winter program to hopefully get better at marching in time while playing?

I want to try snare or tenors my junior or senior year for our winter indoor program, and I think the bass drum would be a good starting point. I play marimba for marching band and usually for indoor. Should I audition or nah? I'm in freshman year for context and have been playing marimba/mallet percussion for 2 seasons and 1 indoor now.

Video Looking for advice/comments on my lot tune transcription

I got this idea from a video of rhythm x 2019 playing this lot tune, so I decided to transcribe it and add my own personal effects such as harmonization, xylo part, etc.

I am not a drumset player so any advice in writing drumset parts on musescore in any regards would be really appreciated!

- Xylo part might also be unplayable, I need to check that out…

To be tagged... Hey, so I found my kid some quads. He is in middle school. I found a simple SPLs but they are a surprise. I wanted to know what kind of sticks are specific for that kit. I have never played them. So I have no clue. He has snare, bell, 5A, 7A, but I know he needs millets. What tip am I looking for?
