Lost the Hunger Games
I royally messed up and scored nothing for the hunger games. Normally I would not be worried because the non-host hotels constantly open up spots throughout the year at a DC rate.
This year I panicked because there are too many things going on in Atlanta that weekend. The downtown hotels are on crack if they think I'm going to pay $800/night.
I figured my best solution would be to book a hotel directly across from the MARTA and take the train there and back. I settled on a hotel right across from the medical center (perimeter center). Apparently there's a walkway that connects to Marta from the hotel. It fully refundable until the day before. It was also only $135/night.
I don't do cosplay. I don't stay out past 10 pm. The hotel is Hyatt House Atlanta/Perimeter Center. Has anyone chosen to stay in this area before? I go to DC alone and I needed a safe quick walk to my hotel at night. It has $15/day parking. I know it takes about 25 minutes via Marta to Peachtree Center. This isn't a big deal for me.
I'd like to hear thoughts from people who have stayed outside of downtown and any issues they didn't anticipate.
It's my first time not getting a hotel within walking distance.

Made a mistake booking a non-refundable DragonCon hotel room. Is there any way to transfer or salvage it?
Hi all,
My emotions are running a little high right now and this is my first post in this subreddit and I’m at work so I apologize for any typos or mistakes here. I made a big, stupid mistake last week on the 15th during the hunger games for the overflow hotels and I was hoping I could get some help to find a solution. In my rush to secure a room, I didn’t do my due diligence and read the policy on cancellations. I just assumed that I wouldn’t be charged upfront and if I had to cancel, I could simply cancel but I was wrong in my case. I booked a room with the Hyatt Centric Midtown and their policy is no refunds and I can’t even transfer the room over to someone else. I’m aware of Facebook group where I can trade with someone else who needs a room but now I’m worried because they said I can’t change my name on the room. Is there like a workaround for this? I asked a friend if she and her husband want it so I was thinking maybe I just go with them and check in with them and then leave? This is like my second time ever booking a hotel room and my second Dragoncon so I’m really clueless about a lot of things if that wasn’t obvious… I just really don’t want to live with the fact that I wasted so much money and can’t get it back… so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Any advice to cheap out on valet parking?
$70 a night +tip just to have someone else park your car is ridiculous and we all know it. I'm tried of feeling like I'm being milked for every penny by these hotels and am looking for suggestions/parking garages where we could keep our car for much less per day.

Aloft Hotel screw up
UPDATE: Turns out there's was something they could do about it because I now have a reservation at the Aloft again. It seems like this was a Marriott software problem, and the local staff at the Aloft are working really hard to make it right for people, so kudos to them.
Edit 2: typo Original post below.
I called to book at Aloft and they said the local hotel staff wouldn't be doing bookings on the phone. They also said that their website was having issues. Rooms never showed up for me on the website, so I called Marriott corporate booking, and got a room. Problem was they couldn't get Wednesday, Thursday, or Monday nights, so I could only get 3 nights. I took it hoping I could add Thursday to it. I talked to a staff member at Aloft who said their system would refresh Friday and I'd be able to see if a Thursday was available. All good.
Then I get an email that because I'm not booked for the 4 night minimum they are canceling my room unless I email back by 5 pm on Friday (tomorrow) what night i want to add. No problem, I email I want Thursday. But it turns out that despite saying in email I had until tomorrow, they have already canceled my room and resold it. I called, and they tell me they did this to over 180 people, and can't do anything to fix it. Great work.

The Connally Hotel Downtown Atlanta
I was just trying to get a room this morning, first time participating in the Hotel Hunger Games. I fortunately managed to get a room at the Connally Hotel because it beats not having something or driving four hours total with a to and from trip from Atlanta. For those who had this hotel before, how exactly do you travel from there to the main five hotels? Because if I tried walking that (Google says a 21 minute walk), my feet would be obliterated before I got there. I see the hotel is located adjacent to the Five Points Marta Station.
Any tips or suggestions on how to get there without exhausting myself before getting there? Anything I need to know about the MARTA?
Thank y'all in advance!

Did they change the start time today to 9am? I swear I checked yesterday and it said 10am.
Everything sells out within two minutes and I was already an hour late.....

Okay what overflow hotels are ACTUALLY sold out bc of early bookings?
FB has been all over the place with which overflows are sold out and which ones just haven't opened bookings yet. I am aware people are just probably fear mongering to scare people away from their 'coveted' hotels but like what ones actually aren't gonna be open until the 15th and what ones are just plain lies

Thinking of making 2027 my first
So, after going to a few different cons over the last few years, I've finally stumbled upon dragoncon. How i didn't know about it until now, who knows. Saw that the most recent one ended not long ago and seeing as I have time to plan and save, Im thinking of attending for the first time next year. Before then, I just want to know as much about the con as possible. DO's and Don'ts, what to expect, etc. bombard me with info, i do not mind

Plan D advice
Ok, so my husband and I have gone to 2 dragon cons, and been lucky enough to get a room through the hunger games.
We had no luck with the first two rounds, and with only one left…
I’m asking for suggestions if we don’t get one of these rooms.
We’re coming from out of state, so…any and all suggestions appreciated.

Dragon Con Thoughts: #1
youtu.beWe asked our friend Jessi, "When does it feel like Dragon Con has really started?" and this was her answer. I filmed this as an experiment this year and I really like how it turned out! Going to try and get a number of people next year to participate!

If you got a room at the Marriott, double check your payment information on the reservation
I was checking my reservation information for the Marriott, because I didn't see the deposit hit my account yet, and saw that the payment section of the confirmation said "other payment" instead of the credit card info that I entered when I reserved the room. There were no details of what "other payment" meant so I updated it with the CC information that I put in originally. Not sure if this is an actual issue but I thought it was something that other people may need to double check on their reservations, just in case.

Marriott question
I managed to get a room during the hunger games it’s my first time attending dragon con and I couldn’t book the room from Tuesday to Tuesday, it said sold out and would only let me book from Thursday to Tuesday. I would like to check in early and meet up with some friends attending.
Anyone know if I can book a rack room rate at the hotel for Tuesday and Wednesday or Tuesday to Thursday and then use the other room I got at the hunger games. Or
Can I call and get the other days added to my reservation, I see the dates available online?
Anyone got experience with this and can help thanks!

Skipped Hunger Games - Any Downside?
2027 will be my first Dragon Con. After reading up on the hotel lottery, I was ready to play the game. Then, Tuesday morning, I remembered that I hated this nonsense both times I went to GenCon. I did some digging, found a room for my son and me at the Hyatt Centric Midtown and simply booked that. The rate was fine, seemingly on par with the official Con hotel rates, and it was booked directly through the hotel, not a third party.
So, what am I going to miss from booking a place 10 minutes by train as opposed to joining the Games and maybe getting a Con hotel?

Call us Lucky, three of use camped at an Air B and B this past DragonCon, not bad. In truth, I prefer the Hotels scene. The Lyft situation was costly in my view. , How many people did we have this past DragonCon, 75K maybe? Getting a decent Hotel Room at today's prices is a hope and a dream

Shame on the off-site hotels.
I don’t want to talk about hunger games because my neighborhood got a power outage TWO MINUTES before queue began. I want to talk about the fact that I stayed at this hotel for Dragoncon in 2022 and my entire week was less than $1,250. This hotel is near the aquarium and the shuttle stop is directly outside but this hotel is nowhere near worth this price.
And no I don’t care that “they can do what they want.” It’s just simply infuriating. Atlanta is a destination for everything from large sporting events to world tours. The hotels are NOT hurting there. So to whoever approves of these price gauging tactics, I hope the other side of your pillow is never cold, every jar of pickles you buy cannot be opened, and the rest of your week is LOVELY.
