Discussion [Megathread] The Next Season of Doctor Who: Fancasts, Speculation, and Where We Go Next

Let's have a fresh megathread to discuss and speculate about the future of Doctor Who. Place your ideas, fancasts, wish lists, and other hot takes in here:

  • Fancasts: Who is your top pick for the Doctor and their companions and their foes? Do you want unknown actors or established names? Old returning villains and monsters or new ones, and who would play them?
  • Production and crew: Have you noticed someone working on another show that would make a good addition to the team? New directors, writers, cinematographers? New showrunner? Old showrunner? No showrunner? What production/media company would you like distributing it?
  • Plot suggestions: What do you want to see happen after Billie Piper's appearance? Longer theories should probably go into their own separate text posts.

A few quick housekeeping reminders: Standard sub rules still apply. We all know casting and showrunner debates get intensely heated. Please help out by keeping things civil. Instead of engaging with someone being hostile, report them.

Also, no or little leaks discussions. If you're bringing up leaked set photos or anything else, please remember to use spoiler tags.

Standalone posts about fancasts will be removed and redirected here. A fresh megathread will be posted every weekend.

Let's hear what you've got.

Discussion I hate how Battlefield made UNIT great and perfect for the 80s, 90s and beyond and then RTD1 picks that up and gives some post 9/11 themes to make another great era for UNIT only for it to go downhill in the Moffat Era and then on the floor by Chibnall and RTD2.

Battlefield brought UNIT back to the centre stage and made them a proper military worldwide organisation. RTD1 took that and mostly kept it but made it darker by adding post 9/11 themes and attitudes to UNIT. We could've easily gone back to Battlefield era type UNIT in Moffat's run but instead it's fanservice, Kate is scientist with no military background in charge of the science division but is commanding soldiers, Big Finish fixed this by adding a Miliary guy with Vikram Shindi. The whole thing was mess but it wasn't that bad, but i was annoyed at their absence in Series 10, they were going be the Monk Trilogy but Jemma (Kate's actress) was on Holby, so that didn't happen but they could have done what RTD1 did with a military character of week kind of thing but in fairness Moffat was dealing with his mum slowing dying in front of him during the first drafts for the Pyramid episode so this can't be help of course and he has my upmost respect along with Peter Harness for taking on such a difficult task.

Onto to the Chibnall Era, i hate that the timeline has been screwed up even more but to give some fairness to Chibs, it's very clear that was meant to Torchwood but we all know that didn't happen. Power Of Doctor i will give some leaway as it was Covid and is just picking from Moffat. Though of course the UNIT thing closing was dumb as it's a worldwide organisation.

Finally RTD2, by now it's just fanservice and praising the Doctor and old companion fan club, a former shell of what use it to be and is all gloss with no bite. In the Giggle Ibrahim is part of Squad Five but by Series 14 he's along side Kate and his role is never really clear and on top of that there are two Colonels in the Series 14 finale, showing there's no sense of Hirchary anymore, Kate is charge now of mostly miliary organisation with a silly title. Then in the Spin Off Pierce randomly turns up as head of Genva, aka UNIT Central marking a first in Doctor Who histroy but nothing is ever done with him and the Unifrom is very messy and inaccrate, in fact it's all over the place in RTD2. Even worse in Unleashed they say UNIT's first Episode is Web of Fear which is wrong, sadly i can't double check as the 1st series is missing.

I hope UNIT gets fixed soon because i hate that we are here now, RTD1 and Battlefield and even the EU pre RTD1 layed out some great groundwork only for it to be ruined later on.

Discussion The first Welsh Doctor

• Upvotes

Despite the show being based in Cardiff for the last two decades, we’ve not had a Welshman* take the TARDIS keys… who would be your pick for the first Welsh Doctor?

I think Iwan Rheon is a fantastic actor with great range, and could be a very interesting Doctor

Edit - *or Welshwoman

I just heard about New Pathways. Is it good? How about the other series set after 8's adventures with Lucy Miller? What's a good series to start with?

Question Does anyone know who might have made this?

I've had this for about 7 or 8 years. I inherited it from my uncle. Back in the 80s onwards he was friends with John Nathan Turner and his partner. After his partner died this, and a few other personal items (and cash!), came to my uncle in his will. I'm sorry, I can't remember his partner's name.

As I was the nearest thing to a Dr Who fan in the family my uncle wanted me to have it. It's been on my wall for years now but I have no idea who might have done this? There is a signature but not much help but I'm thinking it may have been someone involved in the production?

I've been thinking about it because we found out after his death my uncle had a rather colourful life! We are still finding out more even now.

Anyway, just sharing this here, if it breaks any rules please feel free to delete. I just don't have any other Whovians to show it to!

Question Thirteen's Title Sequence - Actor Names

It's been bugging me, so I thought I'd ask, see if anyone knew.

I'm watching Thirteen's run for the first time, and I've noticed they keep switching up the actor names in the title sequence, but can't figure out why. The first two stay the same, always Jodie Whittaker first, Bradley Walsh second, I figure because Whittaker plays the Doctor and Walsh is the most well known actor of the four. Makes sense the Doctor would be listed first, also makes sense they'd put the most well known actor for the companions second, though I note they didn't do that in Twelve's run, with Matt Lucas being the most well known actor playing a companion. I figure that's more because Bill was the official companion, not Nardole.

But the other two? They keep switching them around in the titles. At first, I thought it was based on which character gets the most focus, but half the time it's an equal focus, either because everyone's getting an equal focus, or because it's more centred on the Doctor or Graham. That does seem to be part of it, like the ep set in India was about Yaz's nan's past, so the ep was more focused on her, and her actor's name is third in the list that episode, not fourth. But they seem to swap the names around every episode, regardless of whether one of them has focus above the other one.

Did they just deliberately work the focused episodes so that it would work with switching them around every episode? Or was there another reason for the constant switching? Because I don't remember them ever switching actor names around when they've had more than one companion in the past.

Discussion Imagine the horror of being the Original Dalek Emperor during his final day.

Bro, imagine being permanently stationary, unable to move, unable to fight, your life being completely in the hands of your guards; imagine the sheer horror of having no capacity to escape whatsoever. Even the frailest human can be picked up or use a mobility aid. The Dalek Emperor had none of that. The Emperor acted all-powerful, only to be so defenseless and scared during his final moments. I would say the closest version of that experience irl would be sleep paralysis.

Arts/Crafts PSA: give your Lego Twelfth Doctor a proper head of hair!

The hair Lego chose for Twelve does not do him justice! The great Peter Capaldi has luxuriant silver curls, not this dreadful widow’s peak!

So I swapped mine out for piece 23186, which I purchased on Lego’s website. Looks much more accurate, in my humble opinion. If only they made a Lego figure of him in his burgundy coat!

Cosplay A look inspired by the 11th Doctor

I usually cosplay as the 10th Doctor, but we have finished his episodes again (for this watchthrough). And Matt Smith is pretty dang awesome in his own right. So, I have been sourcing some 'fits (as the youngsters say). Thrifting, eBay, DePop, and the like. Got a few more green coats coming (and a purple one). Trying to stay mindful of cost. I have a couple of suit jackets/blazers that are just okay. Somewhere I have the officially licensed one, as well. But, it's not my favorite as I found the quality to be lacking. So, I'm keeping an eye out for an upgrade there, as well. I'm not going for screen accurate or anything. One could spend a fortune chasing that dream. But, like with all of my cosplays, I aim for budget-friendly and recognizable. My philosophy on cosplay is to remember the PLAY part of it! If you're not having fun, it feels like work. And work you're not getting paid for, at that.

Discussion The next era of Doctor Who should be darker.

I think Doctor Who would work better as a horror/mystery series for the most part, I know it often has been considered a family show or just a show straight up for kids, and I know it’s probably not good for the brand but I think if they really wanna spice up the next era of Doctor Who, make it a show for adults . But not a kin to something like Torchwood, I don’t wanna stupid episode about sex gas but I want mature stories and for a chance for the series to be able to tell literally any kind of story, and for the character to go on literally any kind of adventure, this video by YouTuber Verdana basically sums up a lot of my thoughts of the show, but I really just want the next era to go all out on the weird and wacky but also dark and serious side of Doctor Who, finding good balance between the two would be the perfect sci-fi show. https://youtu.be/P__Dr4vf9ms?is=TTDbU09r410Iqi2P

Edit: I feel like a lot of people aren’t bothering to read my post

This is the old Toys R Us exclusive that was released back in... I want to say 2016?

The second it was announced, I knew I had to have it, but I wouldn't get my hands on it until last year - Almost ten years later. Those childhood (Adolescent/Teenage in my case😅) dreams never go away.

However, out of the box, the colour of the TARDIS is much brighter and it has that plastic sheen to it. It isn't ugly, but it does look a lot like a toy.

So, I painted up the whole box, added a bit of weathering and just tried to make it look a little closer to the screen. I'm still looking for some good chrome paint for the handles and key-hole.

It was worth it, I think. It looks rather magical now😊 Even feels like wood to the touch.

John Hurt obviously can’t be replaced, no denying that.

But if the War Doctor were to ever appear on our screens again (and if the budget allowed it), I genuinely think that Gary Oldman would do well to keep the spirit of the character alive.

Discussion Random Thoughts While Watching Doctor Who "Gridlock"

I'm re-watching Doctor Who for the umpteenth time. I got to the episode called Gridlock. The Cassini (not sisters) said they were amongst the first on the motorway and that was 23 years ago. It got me thinking. If one were to get on the motorway, alone, and die, would the car just stop, stopping everyone behind them, or do you think it would automatically move along? People are in the driver’s seats. Or, if you were with other passengers, and met your demise, would they just keep traveling with you, Weekends at Bernie's style or just push you out of the car?
Side note, could you imagine being stuck with someone and realizing you want to break up but you can't because where would you or the other person/people go?
Anyone else think about stuff like that?

And the rules are that they have to play it properly, so the Daleks can't just win by exterminating everyone else in the first five minutes

Sadly another missing episode/animation so I can't say I think that much of it.. not one I think about a lot. This is seen as a bit of a 'feminist' episode
Not that missing episodes can't be great, there's many I love :)

But I still just wanted to see what other people think about it
