So far I do enjoy this alternate universe. A lot of work has clearly gone into reworking the universe and the role of the factions.
There are two things that bother me though and I’d really like to ask you guys what you think:
- Veronica Roth seems to be trying to justify the rewrite through the narration. I know that’s the whole point of an alternate universe, but sometimes it’s not subtle at all, and it takes me out of the story.
- Related to my first point: we often have characters explaining their choices to make them fit into this rewritten version, but we don’t really understand those choices.
For example, the fact that Tris chooses her family makes no sense to me whatsoever. We haven’t seen her being particularly attached to them in the first place. And to come back to my first point, when Susan questions her about her choice, Tris says that she made it because her family is important to her, and still is. I don’t know, it feels off to me and comes out of nowhere. Sure, she felt betrayed by Caleb’s choice to join the “enemy,” but she herself came to question the legitimacy of her own faction after seeing the news from Erudites. The necessity of the plot and the rewriting seems to be more important than the characters themselves and it’s really been bothering me.
The scene where she asks not to be called Tris seemed quite off to me as well, and also comes out of nowhere. At least in the first book, she was still quite shaken after being the first jumper, so when Four asked her what her name was, her hesitation seemed justified. But here, Evelyn asks her, and Tris immediately gets defensive without us really understanding why.
Am I the only one or did I definitely grow up out of the genre and thinking too much about it? I’d really like to know your opinion! 😊
