Discussion Disc golf mold history and the “old Discmania was better” debate, what’s the lore?
I’ve been playing disc golf for about a year now, and one thing I keep seeing is people talking about how old Discmania discs from the Innova days were better than what’s available today.
It got me curious about how much discs have actually changed over the years. Are there certain molds that fly noticeably differently now compared to older runs, even though they have the same name and advertised flight numbers? Or is some of it nostalgia, plastic differences, and run-to-run variation?
It also got me thinking about how personal preferences change over time. When I first started playing, my brother told me his favorite disc was a Star TeeRex and said that once I got better, I should get one. Eventually, I did, but honestly, I didn’t love it as much as I expected to. 😂 Maybe it was my skill level, maybe it was the particular run, or maybe it just wasn’t for me.
That got me wondering how much of the hype around certain older discs comes down to the actual flight versus the memories and experiences people associate with them.
I’d love to hear about other manufacturers and molds, too! Whether it’s old Discmania, Innova, Discraft, MVP/Axiom, or anyone else.
What are some interesting examples of discs that have changed over time? Are there older runs that people still hunt for because they fly differently or are just that good? And are there molds you grew to appreciate only after your game improved?
I’m relatively new to the sport, so I’d love to hear the history, stories, and general disc golf lore from people who’ve been around longer. Give me some rabbit holes to go down!
