Question Anyone successfully escaped California tax residency as a digital nomad using South Dakota?
I've read up on the South Dakota domicile requirements and am considering making an in-person trip around December 28 to spend a couple nights there, get my driver's license, and complete the residency affidavit.
I've already cut most of my ties to California and spent less than 30 days there this year, but I didn't formally establish a new domicile. I work as a 1099 contractor with no California clients.
I've accepted that I'll be paying CA taxes for 2026, but I want to make sure I'm no longer a California tax resident for 2027.
I know California can be aggressive about challenging residency changes, so I'm curious if any digital nomads have done this successfully in the last few years. Have you been audited or run into any issues with the CA FTB? Anything you wish you'd done differently?
Especially interested in people traveling internationally rather than moving to another state full-time.
