Moderator post ⚠️🚨 The subreddit's creep problem and why the current Reddit algorithm puts women at risk by design.

Post image
58 Upvotes

This is a rant triggered by the fact that I'm sick and tired of perverts in the sub, and I hate that no matter how much I try to keep this community safe, Reddit itself enables this behaviour and doesn't seem to be doing anything about it.

Keeping this sub free of creeps is a daily battle. The standard disgusting pervy comments, weird flirty remarks, and the daily assortment of freaks who post AI-generated gooner bait (or worse, catfish with pictures of actual women). Y'all won't believe how much filth this sub actually gets, because most of it gets removed by the mods or our filters before anyone gets to see it, and they get banned on sight. (None of it stops them from DMing you btw, but more on that later.)

I knew that for some reason, Reddit had been showing this community to pervs... A lot. So I believed that if I consistently kept the creeps out (by removing their content and banning their accounts), the algorithm would realize this is just a wedding planning community and would stop recommending it to people who're here primarily for porn. It has been almost a year of me doing that, and there has been no reduction in the incoming creep traffic.

Then I came across this post by a moderator of a different sub, and the discussion gave me a whole new perspective on what may actually be happening.

NSFW consumers make up a huge population of the Reddit userbase. But Reddit can't put ads in NSFW subreddits, and NSFW posts can't be put in the main feed where ads are shown. So Reddit has to show them SFW communities adjacent to their interests.

There are countless NSFW/fetish communities built around sexualizing south asian women, wives, brides, weddings, sarees, lehengas etc. So Reddit already has a huge number of people using those words to look for sexual content. (It also doesn't help that "desi" is a particularly cursed keyword on Reddit. Go search "desi" and filter by communities. You'll have to scroll for quite a while before you find an actual non-porn sub about South Asian people.)

So the algorithm sees a community with the word "desi" in its name, with a large volume of women's fashion posts, and users who overlap with communities interested in sexualized versions of those exact subjects. It then decides that these communities are related enough to actively recommend our posts to those people. Reddit can take your completely ordinary not-at-all sexual pictures and put them in front of people who are specifically looking for women to sexualize.

And this isn't happening to just this sub. If you've been active in any sub where women often post their pictures, you'll know how common and widespread the issue is. "RIP DMs" is a ubiquitous comment under posts where a woman posts her picture .

And then there are DMs.

This is one of the most cursed features of Reddit. A community ban only stops accounts from posting & commenting. Even the ban message explicitly states:

"You can still view and subscribe to the community..."

So even after they are banned, they can still browse the subreddit, see your pictures, save them, misuse them, and potentially send you whatever disgusting shit they want. That is an absolutely insane oversight and completely defeats the purpose of the ban when it comes to protecting people from these accounts.

I hate that I have to say this. I hate that after doing everything I can to keep this subreddit safe, I still have to tell the women here that they have to take steps to protect themselves because we are powerless against the algorithm and who it chooses to show your images to.

So ladies, please be mindful about sharing your pictures anywhere on Reddit. We will keep doing everything we can to keep this sub clean, but there are limits to what moderators can control.

  1. As much as possible, please avoid posting pictures that prominently show your body, especially if you don't need to for the purpose of the post. Consider cropping or covering parts of the image that don't need to be visible. (You shouldn't have to do this, but the way Reddit is, you cannot assume your pictures will only be shown to the audience you intended.)

  2. If you're posting your pictures, please consider shutting DMs off for a while. (Again, you shouldn't have to do this, but unfortunately basic decency is too much to expect from people whose brains have been completely rotted by porn.)

  3. If you do get pervy DMs, report them for Spam -> "Unsolicited DMs", (or "Harassment" for the particularly graphic ones). If they are DMing you, chances are they are DMing many other women too. If enough of them report it, Reddit suspends the sender's ability to DM.

Based on the comments under the mod post linked above, Admins have responded and are looking into the issue. But until then, please take care of your safety on this site.

Bridal fashion advice Need advice - How should I style my peach reception outfit

Post image

I’ve never worn makeup in my life and want to keep my bridal look elegant but comfortable.

How would you style this outfit? Please suggest jewellery, makeup, hairstyle and reception decor.

Also, what should my groom wear? Ivory or a navy-blue suit?

I’m worried my outfit might look too light or washed out in outdoor photographs.

Would love your suggestions! 🥹💕

Rant/Vent ⚡ I feel broken inside coz my family has ruined my surprise proposal

Here’s what happened
I’m 28F. My high school sweetheart 28M (we’ve been together for 12+ years) and even moved in together a couple of years ago. He bought a ring to propose to me and talked to my parents that he wanted to propose and my parents behaved normally with him and said yes.

The next day I was on a call with my mom and she asked me about the ring and I said what ring. And she said he bought the ring and are we gonna get engaged on our own now, will this make us happy. I said you mean he wants to propose to me, Ofc it’d make me happy, we’ve been together for so long. And she said so you’re gonna get engaged on your own so you might do a court wedding as well without any family and break your relation with everyone in the family. And I said why are you making such a big deal out of this. I asked her what according to her is an “engagement”. She said both the families come together and the couples exchange a ring, he can propose to you but why is the ring necessary. And I was like wdym that’s how it’s supposed to be done and our families could come together anyway later and celebrate. She said what’s even the point of doing it later if you’re gonna get engaged on your own.

I am so upset with this. I left all the family WhatsApp groups, blocked both my parents. Mind you my mom even knows about us moving in together. Both our families approve of our relationship. My parents have always been very supportive and sweet to my boyfriend and nobody ever had an issue. And now I can’t believe they’ve ruined something so beautiful for me by doing this. At this point I’m so heartbroken and I’ve been crying and I feel like I can never feel any happiness again.

Wedding rituals/traditions Non religious ceremony

Hi! Need help designing my wedding ceremony.

For context: my fiance and I have been together for 9 years and are from different religions and states in India. Our parents are supportive but mine still do have some traditional expectations of what weddings look like.

We have decided to do a medium sized wedding in Bali next year and do cultural but not religious events - so doing haldi/mehndi and sangeet.

For the ceremony, we will do varmala and exchange ring/ chain but skip the pheras etc. the concern is that just this will be too short for the ceremony, so I would like some ideas to make this feel like a proper ceremony while avoiding any specific religious aspects. We are not super keen on very personal vows in public but could be open to something short and sweet? And maybe the families could be involved in some way- blessings or reading something ? We can also have an emcee perhaps?

We also don’t love being centre of attention or dancing so my fiancé is nervous about doing a baarat.
We’re also being told to do a first dance but again this isn’t really our vibe. Any suggestions to adapt these to make it more lowley but also keep the fun vibes?

Any suggestions welcome!

Vendor/Store Search (No Self-Promo) Any recs for legit IG shops that ship overseas?

Hi everyone! 👋 Summer 2027 bride here, US-based and unable to make it out to India for irl wedding shopping. Searching for leads on online/Instagram shops that can recreate Mahima Mahajan-style lehengas, anarkalis for under $1k/₹1L.

Hesitant to buy directly from MM after reading reviews that mention service and quality issues. Even besides that their pricing just doesn’t add up for printed fabric with minimal embroidery imo, though the designs are stunning in photos. I’ve reached out to Kultham Fashion, Moorni Designs, Luxmi’s Mahilpur and a few others so far, but their feedback seems pretty mixed.

Thanks in advance!

(While I’m here, recs on best places to find Kanchipuram tissue silk sarees would also be greatly appreciated 🙏)

Bridal fashion advice Is this lehenga too traditional/old-fashioned for a 2027 wedding? Need honest opinions!

I saw a lehenga very similar to this while bridal shopping and was almost ready to finalise it, but now I am having second thoughts.

I am considering red or fuchsia pink in color for my daytime wedding.

Please be honest, I am so confused 😩

Wedding rituals/traditions Auspicious Times for Indian Wedding

We are trying to plan a desi wedding in the US, where venues and vendors often book out far in advance. Unfortunately, the Hindu calendar doesn't release each year until ~November. My and my fiancee's parents are pretty rigid on wanting the wedding to happen on auspicious date and time. Does anyone have advice on how to navigate booking a venue/vendors 1-2 years ahead of time when dates can't be absolutely solidified beforehand?

Bridal fashion advice Why are Delhi/Gurgaon MUAs charging ₹30k EACH for Haldi and Mehendi?!

I've been reaching out to MUAs, and so many are quoting ₹30k per function for Haldi and Mehendi. That's ₹60k for just two events!! 😭

I get paying a premium for wedding day makeup, but this feels excessive, especially when I just want a simple, fresh, glowy look.

**Looking for good MUA recommendations in Delhi/Gurgaon under ₹15k per function**, preferably including hair and makeup.

Please share any recommendations or Instagram handles! Also, is ₹15k an unrealistic budget these two days? 🥲

Budgets/Expenses Honeymoon destination confusion

Hello, so my fiancé and I are getting married in late november and would like to go for our honeymoon/travelling in christmas/new year week.

I am thinking as this is peak travelling season we should go somewhere nearby and maybe travel internationally later when the flight rates and hotel rates would be normal. We are from agra.

I was thinking Rajasthan for december and maybe Bali or vietnam for the international trip.

Manali I don't want to go as I have motion sickness and as it's kind of near agra we can go anytime. Meghalaya he wanted to go but I think the flight prices make it expensive if we want to travel internationally soon. Same for Andamans.

Would like your opinions and thoughts on this and whether Rajathan is good?

Bridal fashion advice Help me choose an engagement ring! I’m so confused between these options 😭

Hi everyone!
I’m looking to buy an engagement ring and I’m really confused between a few options. I’ve been going back and forth and would love some honest opinions from people who know more about rings or have gone through this process themselves.
I want something that looks elegant, timeless, and classy — something I’ll love wearing every day for years to come, rather than something that just looks trendy right now.
I’m sharing the options I’m considering. Please tell me which one you would pick and why! I’d especially appreciate opinions on which one looks the most beautiful, timeless, and flattering on the hand.
Also, if you have any suggestions regarding the setting, stone shape, or anything else I should consider before making the purchase, please let me know.
I’m clearly overthinking this, so help a girl out! 😂💍
Thank you! ❤️

Miscellaneous Food expected at a Haldi or Milni?

NRI couple having a mixed Haldi combined with Milni in Chandigarh. What’s the usual food expectation? Going to be at a rented venue outdoor lawn.

I’m getting quotes for 2500 a plate 💀 feels excessive.

Please help me not get ripped off 😭 want to know what’s the usual food expectation here and add a personal taste touch if possible in some areas.

Also would it be very random to do a Thai menu?

Recommendations for yummy food vendors is also appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Bridal fashion advice Is this realistic?

Hi everyone!

I'm getting married in August 2028 and I'm currently looking into options for my civil wedding outfit!

I'm based in europe, but I have Indian roots (Tamil), and I'd really love to incorporate that part of my heritage into my civil wedding look.

I already have a beautiful ivory/white saree with teal and gold detailing, and instead of wearing it traditionally, I'm dreaming of transforming it into a modern Indo-Western outfit.

I'm thinking of a tailored, wide-leg jumpsuit or pantsuit with a long, sleeveless jacket/coat, incorporating the original saree fabric and zari borders. Something elegant, contemporary and bridal, while still keeping those traditional Indian elements.

I've attached some inspiration pictures (pink) and a rough AI-generated concept to show what I have in mind! (Teal)

I'm mainly looking for recommendations in Chennai.

A few questions:

Has anyone had a saree repurposed into a jumpsuit, pantsuit or similar Indo-Western outfit?

Do you know any reliable tailors or designers in Chennai who take on custom projects using fabric provided by the client?

What kind of budget should I realistically expect for something like this?

How many fittings would typically be needed, especially if I'm travelling from abroad?

I'd especially love to hear about personal experiences, recommendations or even pictures of similar outfits!

Thank you so much in advance! 🥰

Trying to find a nikkah outfit (preferably desi style lehenga /anarkali) but need it in a very short timeframe (3 weeks). If any US based stores can get this done — it would take one headache off my hands.

Wedding rituals/traditions Future MIL not giving me family jewelry on wedding day

Hi friends!
I need some advice.

I’m a Mexican American woman marrying a Punjabi Hindu man. I was told by him when we got engaged that I’m set to be gifted the family jewelry from his mother on our wedding day.

I’ve been so excited for this as his dad’s mother has already passed and having her jewelry would be such an honor!

We’ve been engaged for over a year and our wedding is in 5 months. For context, his mother immigrated to America 6 years ago and has a green card. The jewelry is in a safe deposit box in India. Yesterday, she tells him she’s not going to India to retrieve the jewelry any time soon. That they’ll just buy me new jewelry.

I’m shocked and upset about this because:

  1. They come from money so I know a flight to India would not be an issue

  2. She knew a whole 6 months PRIOR to our engagement that we’d be getting engaged. Which means she’s had almost 2 years to plan to get the jewelry.

  3. I feel like she believes she can deny me this because I’m not Indian.

I don’t want to sound like a brat by being upset by new jewelry. I’ll accept anything they gift me with gratitude.
However, I feel sad that I won’t experience this tradition because it is something so meaningful.

I guess what I’m asking for is validation. Am I overreacting? How would you feel if this was happening to you? What should I do moving forward?

Wedding rituals/traditions Intercultural wedding ceremony .

I’m reaching out to the wider community for advice and help regarding an inter cultural / cross border Indian wedding ceremony.
We are looking for an English speaking priest who understands that one half of the family does not speak an Indian language. The requirements are for a liberal priest who is willing to listen and modify ( not cut corners) the rituals so that everyone can enjoy the wedding.

The ceremony should be Hindu and leaning towards Tamil traditions if possible.

Friends have talked about an Arya samaj or Hare Krishna priest.
Does anyone have suggestions? Anyone have a similar ceremony and has any recommendations?

Thanks in advance. 🙏🏼

Miscellaneous Need Chandni Chowk shopping guide

Hi guys, need some advice on Chandni Chowk bridal lehenga shopping.

I went to cc last week for the first time and got overwhelmed for obvious reasons.

I had seen other reddit posts suggesting to bargain a lot there.. Like upto 40-50%. But I couldn't do so in the shops I visited. It was hard to get even 10% off for a 40-60k lehenga. Do I need to enhance my bargaining skills? I visited shops like Maharani collection and Sindoor sarees. Any idea how much can I bargain on a 40-60k lehenga?

Could you suggest some other good shops for red bridal lehengas in CC (my budget is around 40k).

One more thing, while coming out from Maharani collection, a broker insisted me to visit his shop which was at a random hidden place nearby, 3 stories up. There they had lehengas starting from 7-8k (looked cheap ofcourse) but they showed some decent handwork pieces under 40k after I told them that my budget is around 30-40k. Should I consider such shops or are those a scam? Because the shop owner was ready to give a 30-40% discount and said that he needs 2 months to customize the piece. I really can't mess this up because if he scams me after 2 months (like delivering a cheaper/machine work piece), I won't be having enough time to look for something else again as my wedding is in February 27. Please give your opinions or tell about your experiences if any, of such shops in CC.

Thanks and love! 💗
