Moderator post ⚠️🚨 The subreddit's creep problem and why the current Reddit algorithm puts women at risk by design.

Post image
60 Upvotes

This is a rant triggered by the fact that I'm sick and tired of perverts in the sub, and I hate that no matter how much I try to keep this community safe, Reddit itself enables this behaviour and doesn't seem to be doing anything about it.

Keeping this sub free of creeps is a daily battle. The standard disgusting pervy comments, weird flirty remarks, and the daily assortment of freaks who post AI-generated gooner bait (or worse, catfish with pictures of actual women). Y'all won't believe how much filth this sub actually gets, because most of it gets removed by the mods or our filters before anyone gets to see it, and they get banned on sight. (None of it stops them from DMing you btw, but more on that later.)

I knew that for some reason, Reddit had been showing this community to pervs... A lot. So I believed that if I consistently kept the creeps out (by removing their content and banning their accounts), the algorithm would realize this is just a wedding planning community and would stop recommending it to people who're here primarily for porn. It has been almost a year of me doing that, and there has been no reduction in the incoming creep traffic.

Then I came across this post by a moderator of a different sub, and the discussion gave me a whole new perspective on what may actually be happening.

NSFW consumers make up a huge population of the Reddit userbase. But Reddit can't put ads in NSFW subreddits, and NSFW posts can't be put in the main feed where ads are shown. So Reddit has to show them SFW communities adjacent to their interests.

There are countless NSFW/fetish communities built around sexualizing south asian women, wives, brides, weddings, sarees, lehengas etc. So Reddit already has a huge number of people using those words to look for sexual content. (It also doesn't help that "desi" is a particularly cursed keyword on Reddit. Go search "desi" and filter by communities. You'll have to scroll for quite a while before you find an actual non-porn sub about South Asian people.)

So the algorithm sees a community with the word "desi" in its name, with a large volume of women's fashion posts, and users who overlap with communities interested in sexualized versions of those exact subjects. It then decides that these communities are related enough to actively recommend our posts to those people. Reddit can take your completely ordinary not-at-all sexual pictures and put them in front of people who are specifically looking for women to sexualize.

And this isn't happening to just this sub. If you've been active in any sub where women often post their pictures, you'll know how common and widespread the issue is. "RIP DMs" is a ubiquitous comment under posts where a woman posts her picture .

And then there are DMs.

This is one of the most cursed features of Reddit. A community ban only stops accounts from posting & commenting. Even the ban message explicitly states:

"You can still view and subscribe to the community..."

So even after they are banned, they can still browse the subreddit, see your pictures, save them, misuse them, and potentially send you whatever disgusting shit they want. That is an absolutely insane oversight and completely defeats the purpose of the ban when it comes to protecting people from these accounts.

I hate that I have to say this. I hate that after doing everything I can to keep this subreddit safe, I still have to tell the women here that they have to take steps to protect themselves because we are powerless against the algorithm and who it chooses to show your images to.

So ladies, please be mindful about sharing your pictures anywhere on Reddit. We will keep doing everything we can to keep this sub clean, but there are limits to what moderators can control.

  1. As much as possible, please avoid posting pictures that prominently show your body, especially if you don't need to for the purpose of the post. Consider cropping or covering parts of the image that don't need to be visible. (You shouldn't have to do this, but the way Reddit is, you cannot assume your pictures will only be shown to the audience you intended.)

  2. If you're posting your pictures, please consider shutting DMs off for a while. (Again, you shouldn't have to do this, but unfortunately basic decency is too much to expect from people whose brains have been completely rotted by porn.)

  3. If you do get pervy DMs, report them for Spam -> "Unsolicited DMs", (or "Harassment" for the particularly graphic ones). If they are DMing you, chances are they are DMing many other women too. If enough of them report it, Reddit suspends the sender's ability to DM.

Based on the comments under the mod post linked above, Admins have responded and are looking into the issue. But until then, please take care of your safety on this site.

Bridal fashion advice 2027 bride, help me decide my sangeet and haldi outfits!! 🥹

Hiii, I need some help!! 🥹

I'm a 2027 NRI bride and currently trying to figure out my wedding outfits, particularly for my sangeet and haldi! I am not doing a mehendi, so it's just Haldi + dinner, and then Sangeet on 2 separate nights.

For my sangeet, I wanted something a little different from the usual head-to-toe sequins/mirror work/cut dana sparkly lehengas. Something a bit hatke, maybe garba vibes – traditional but still modern, colourful, interesting and bridal enough!

I'm vegan, so I'm specifically looking for outfits with no silk or other animal-derived materials.

I really liked the idea of an ikat/patola-inspired lehenga with mirror work, or alternatively a heavily embellished mirror-work Ajrakh lehenga on modal fabric (something along the lines of Nitya Bajaj).

I've attached two AI-generated designs of what I had in mind, but my biggest concern is that if I get something custom-made, it might look completely different in real life 😭 Especially when it comes to finding or weaving custom fabric pattern in a vegan fabric... (eg viscose, cupro etc)

My alternative is the sage green Anita Dongre skirt set (also pictured). I actually tried this on in person and really liked it! It's comfortable, lightweight and I could dance easily in it, but I'm unsure whether it's quite giving sangeet/bridal vibes?

My sangeet will be indoors, in the evening, and I plan to dance A LOT, so I want something that looks special but is also practical.

Now here's my other dilemma...

I was originally considering wearing the Anita Dongre outfit after my sunset haldi, changing into it for the last 30 minutes or so of daylight and then wearing it for a relaxed dinner.

But it definitely feels more like a daytime outfit, and my actual haldi is going to be messy, so I don't want to risk ruining something that expensive during the ceremony!

Would love your thoughts!!

  • Do you think the ikat/Ajrakh designs could work as sangeet outfits, or am I taking too much of a risk getting something like this custom-made?
  • Is the Anita Dongre outfit sangeet-worthy, or is it better suited to my post-haldi dinner?
  • Any recommendations for designers or small businesses that could execute something like these designs beautifully in vegan fabrics?

I'm probably overthinking all of this, but I'd really love some opinions! ❤️

Bridal fashion advice Haldi Carnival Outfit

Hi guys! 💕
I’m super confused about my Haldi Carnival outfit and could really use some honest opinions and suggestions!
Just to give you a little background, the colour palette for the carnival is pink and tangerine, and I wanted to wear something that would stand out. So, I decided to go with a lime green sharara with a corset.
However, the colour has turned out to be a little brighter than I had imagined, and now I’m second-guessing whether the shade and the work actually look good together.
With very little time left, I’m trying to decide whether I should stick with this outfit or start looking for something else.
The outfit is currently being refitted to my measurements, so please excuse the fit in the pictures!

I’d genuinely appreciate your honest feedback on the colour, the work.

Thank you so much in advance for your help! :))

Bridal fashion advice Malay-SL Bridal

Im Malay-Sri Lankan in California. This is the dress I got and it is getting custom made.

There aren’t any bridal Malay nor Sri Lankan clothing stores close to me that I’m aware of. Is there a way to make this lehenga more Malay/sri Lankan?

I’m thinking I can do a saree drape. And get the top longer like a baju kurung?

Wedding guest fashion advice Help! First time Desi wedding guest!

Hi! My boyfriend (29M) and I (28F) are going to Hyderabad for his best friend’s wedding in early December. We are both from the U.S. and this is our first Desi wedding. He is in the wedding party and I am attending as a guest. We were both invited to Mehndi, Sangeet, and the wedding ceremony & reception, so I will need 3 outfits! I don’t know what he’s wearing for the actual ceremony, but he did purchase his outfits for Mehndi and Sangeet (the last two photos). My budget is between $80-$150 per event, and these are all chosen from Etsy. I have no idea what’s appropriate for which event, so any help is welcome!

Groom fashion advice Roka Outfit Suggestions - 1 Week left 😭

Post image
4 Upvotes

My roka ceremony is next week, and I’m struggling to finalize my outfit.

As a brown-skinned guy, I feel that white and lighter colours don’t suit my skin tone very well. Wearing black is also not allowed in our family.

I’d really appreciate it if someone could suggest outfit ideas, preferably with links or images for ideas. I’m open to getting an outfit custom-tailored as well. I’m based in a city around 4 hours from Delhi, so I can travel if needed.

I have a knock-knee condition, so I prefer to avoid fitted trousers. Relaxed-fit Korean-style trousers are very welcome, and I’m also open to kurtas or other styles.

My fiancée will be wearing a lehenga, but its colour hasn’t been decided yet.

Looking forward to your suggestions! 🙏

Wedding guest fashion advice First Indian wedding - please help!!

Hi all!

I am attending my first Indian wedding at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota. My boyfriend is a groomsman, therefore we are invited to Mehndi, Vidhi (Haldi), Sangeet, the ceremony, and the reception.

I am super stressed about outfits! I really want to embrace the culture and be appropriate at each event. I also want to make sure I’m not over doing it since I am a +1.

We were given dress code for Sangeet (Indian attire optional), the ceremony (Indian attire required - no red, light or pastel colors preferred), and reception (optional). No specific dress codes for Mehndi or Vidhi

I have attached photos of what I have picked out so far. From left to right, it’s what I would wear for Mehndi (pink) Vidhi (yellow), Sangeet (burgundy), Ceremony (icy blue), reception (floral dress). The last is a backup I’d wear to Sangeet if burgundy doesn’t work out.

One specific question I have is whether the burgundy would be an appropriate color if it said no red to the ceremony.

I’d really appreciate any advice or feedback, especially on whether these outfits are appropriate for each event and if anything seems too casual, too formal, or over the top.

Venue/Decor Estate wedding in California

Has anyone had any estate wedding in California? Preferably Southern California near Palm Springs or Orange County?

My questions are-
1) we have a tight budget if $50k. The guest count around 40ish people for wedding ceremonies and 80-100 for Reception. Will estate weddings be any cheaper for the wedding compared to booking a banquet hall?

2) is the 50k budget realistic? We do not want to spend a fortune on it. But would like to have a realistic answer.

3) we do not have any family here to help us. I am just worried of the transportation and the logistics of how to get people in one place. Will the estate be better in that respect?

4) i have been talking to few planner and they have quoted $8000-8500. Is that a reasonable amount? Will spending 8k out of out our budget be worth it?

5) will any other location within the SoCal be comparatively cheaper than the others?

Thanks!

Wedding guest fashion advice Welcome Lunch Attire?

Here's another one for my favorite corner of the internet...

Non-desi headed to India for a wedding (bride is American) at a resort near Mussoorie in December. There is a welcome lunch at the resort the day of the big cocktail party. What should I wear for this event? It is not specifically addressed on the website like all the other events.

Note: I am 60 year old female. I am trying to keep my luggage light (it is already filled with the rest of the wedding outfits and clothes for trekking in Bhutan before we get to India.)

Thank you all!

Vendor/store search (Self-Promo OK) where can i get a custom bridal saree blouse designed in the NYC/NJ area?

open to any other vendors in north america if yall know anyone good! im a designer myself (architectural tho lol) and i already have pretty saree options lined up online but i'm really picky about blouse designs, if i'm anyways paying for my wedding the saree is up to the manufacturer but the blouse is the only opportunity really for something to be done the way i want and well I Want It the way I Want... my telugu is only colloquial and i don't have enough vocabulary to communicate this the way i want and i never had to learn hindi so i'm trying to find an english speaking vendor that offers custom blouse design that i can also talk it over with (And that I can be #STRICT with.)

Wedding guest fashion advice Jewellery suggestions needed

I AM NOT THE BRIDE

This is the lehenga I’ll be wearing for my brother in law’s baraat, that is in India after which I’ll change into a simple saree. I fell in love with the colour (it’s more orange in person) but was hesitant because I didn’t want to look too bridal.
The bride will be wearing a saree for the varmala and wedding, as she isn’t comfortable in a lehenga. I showed her mine, and she said she loved it (I hope she meant it 😭).
However, after I bought it, some family members made comments that made me wonder if it was too heavy or over-the-top. Now I’m second-guessing myself!
Please suggest jewellery that would complement it without making it look more bridal. And honestly, is this lehenga too much for the groom’s sister in law to wear at the baraat, or am I overthinkingj it? 🥹❤️

I am not able to add the picture of the lehnga so will add in comments

Bought it in mumbai 6.5k

Miscellaneous Is there a place to sell unworn wedding lengha?

Hello - I called off my wedding about a year ago, but the main bridal lengha was already made. I paid about $4000 for it, and I don’t want it to go to waste. Is there a place or a website that I can resell it on that anyone knows about? It is completely unworn.. I didn’t even try it on when it came in.

Wedding guest fashion advice Mehndi party guest - no red

My husband is a groomsman so we got invited to the pre-wedding event/party which is a Mehndi get-together. Since the mehndi party dress code is “Indian attire, no red” i completely understand to not wear red to this pre-wedding event/party. (I have a green outfit.)

That being said, my question is, would it be appropriate to wear a burgundy dress to the wedding itself?* *The wedding invite only said “formal attire”. I would ask the bride, but i really don’t want to bother her bc i feel like i’ve asked her a lot of other questions already (mostly about bringing our toddler…)

• Event type - wedding (formal attire)
• Location - vineyard in Northern California
• Budget - $$
• Preferences - burgundy ??
• Relationship to the couple (if wedding guest) - friends

TIA

Edit: i asked the bride before i got most of the responses on here (saying to avoid burgundy) and she replied to say the “no red” dress code is exclusively for the mendhi party, and not the wedding, and clarified that burgundy would be fine. Maybe i should have mentioned that only the groom is Desi, not the bride.
