What have you learned about managing debt in 2025 that could actually help people in 2026?

I think a lot of people are entering 2026 carrying financial pressure from the last couple of years, and shared experience might be more useful than another article telling us to “budget better.” :)

Need some financial advice I’m not sure how to proceed with my situation I also feel like I’m behind my peers

For context I’m 21 years old and I currently live at home with my dad

Now I’m well aware of how dumb it might have been to dig myself into this hole but that’s not what I’m I’m here for, I’d like some advice on what the best ways to go about this would be

I currently own a 2016 Honda civic financed 10k remaining 277 a month @ 10% interest

4 credit cards

1 bofa 350

2 capital one 1000 0% interest until February

3 chase 1900 0% interest until December 2027

4 citi. 800 0% interest until December 2027

I was very dumb and had received a refund back a year ago from school and decided to use that on a 1999 Lexus ls400 with 156k miles for 5900$ and I also invested 3000$ in preventative maintenance

The car has been good to me besides the power steering not working and a few electrical issues with some of the inside controls

I have a offer tomorrow to sell it for 4750 which is obviously a huge loss for me and I really do enjoy the car but the smart in me thinks that it could be potentially a big money pit

In my checkings account I have 40k and after I sold it I would be at 44750 but with all my debt

I don’t pay many bills thankfully only my insurance right now which is 244 and then of course all the credit cards etc

I only make 1900 a month from my little fast food job

What would you guys do in my situation sell the Lexus and pay off all my debt or keep the lexus and continue to slowly pay things off as well as put money away for unexpected car repairs

Debt Advice

Hi,

Due to life’s circumstances I find myself in a bit of debt. I started budgeting earlier this year and want some feedback on my strategy with the goal to pay the debt off as fast as I can. I am seeking advice regarding how I can manage my debt better while achieving this. I have the following debt:

Cap 1 CC: $6023 @ 9.99% APR until Nov. 3rd (Unsure what % after but likely 23%-25%)

Chase CC: $4888 @ 0% APR until Feb 2027

Car Loan: $14.5k @ 6.98%

I am currently putting $1k/month at the Cap1 card and $60/month at the Chase Card (min payment: $41). I am putting $320/month at the car loan (min payment $281).

Monthly Net. Income: $4550

Monthly Expenses:
Rent: $1570
Car Insurance: $145
Utilities: $100-$130
Phone: $43
Subscriptions: $55
Fun money: $100-$200
Savings $200 in HYSA
Groceries: $160-$200
Gas: $200-250

I am currently contributing to a 401K currently but don’t take advantage of the full employer match since right now I am trying to pay off the CC debt as fast I can.

I started staying extremely disciplined with my money since March where the CC balance was close to $18k in total. I have brought it down to $11k while building a smaller $1000 savings buffer which honestly has been so clutch over the last couple months for unexpected expenses.

With my promotional rate on the Cap1 card coming to an end on Nov 3rd I seek some advice regarding what my next step should be to keep the momentum going:

If I don’t get an APR reduction for the cap 1 card, should I apply for a personal loan for just Cap1 or for both CCs together to keep interest rate low? My credit score ranges 655 on Creditwise, 650 on MyFico, 701 on Experian.

Appreciate any advice or suggestions!

I need help

okay, so I live in Germany and I have had bad luck ith cars so now I'm 20k in debt. now the thing is that i talked to my bank and it's different than in America so I can't pay of 30€ here and 50 there. I can only make extra payments if they're like two months of monthly payments so around 450 a month. now are there any tips to save up that kind of money regularly? I wanna pay it off faster but I have a difficult time saving up 900€ every so often. it would be way easier if I could make micro payments but that's not possible.

Would you get a 401(k) loan?

So my husband and I are separated but still living together because we need to pay off about $23k in consumer debt before we can collectively afford for him to move out.

Currently, I have a 401(k) loan that is almost paid off and I will have the ability to get another one in November, I am estimating I might be able to gat a loan of about $9k. Some of our debts are either high interest, or they will begin to accrue interest soon because they’re currently on a promotional balance. So I’m trying to find out whether it makes sense for me to get another 401(k) loan to pay some of this off before that happens, or if it makes more sense to keep the money in my 401(k).

Here are all our debts, approximated:
$8700 - his car loan (16% interest, $290 a month)
$4400 - my car loan (0% interest, $210 a month)
$700 - his CC1 (28% interest, $25 a month)
*$2000 - his CC2 (0% until February, $25 a month)
$500 - my CC1 (28% interest, $25 a month)
*$3000 - my CC2 (0% until September, $28 a month)
*$3700 - personal loan (35% interest, $135 a month)

I’m picturing a few different scenarios here
1- I can pay off the three debts that are asterisked. This saves us about $200 per month in monthly payments but saves/protect us from a lot of interest in the future.

2- we can pay off just his car loan and potentially the two smaller credit cards “CC1” which would save us about $340 per month in monthly payments. Then we’d have more money to contribute towards the credit cards that are currently on promotional interest but it doesn’t help with the high interest personal loan.

3- I don’t take out the 401(k) loan at all because even though it’s basically zero interest, it’s still more/different debt.

4- Another option??

Does anyone else send the extra payment the day they get paid instead of waiting

i used to hold onto extra money until the due date because in my head it felt safer sitting in checking. like what if something came up and i needed it.

problem is credit card interest is not waiting for the due date, its ticking every day on the balance. so holding $200 for two extra weeks just meant paying interest on that $200 for two more weeks for no real reason.

now if i know its extra i just send it that day. not the minimum, thats still on autopay, i mean the extra chunk. smaller balance sooner, less interest, and honestly i am less tempted to spend it on dumb stuff when its already gone.

curious if other people do it this way or if i am overthinking a couple bucks

Need help with tiny house decision

I need your help with my decision. Is it wise to buy a tiny house that will help lower my monthly cost or have it at about the same costs? I live in a hcol area. My dream is to leave usa permenantly after I retire in 20-30 years. Right now housing is my issue. Living in buildings after leaving my family home has been a nightmare but I dont have the option of moving back since my family has moved away. So my dream is to buy a house and live in it until I retire but as a single person who does not want marriage or children, it is extremely difficult to compete in my market with my income. I have the opprtunity to buy an actual house but it is literally 450sq ft and it is a foreclosure having a diffucult time selling. If I get this property , my biggest fear is having to sell it when the time comes. I know I can make it pretty and attractive but will someone else want to live in such a small place as I dont mind considering I would do anything not to share walls. Anyhow what are your thoughts? Thank you in advance!

Debt / Settlements / Summons

This is just a rant since I have no one close to say it to for any support.
I’m a 26F

Over the course of 2025/2026,
I had 3 credit cards I used. Kohls, Citibank (Balance Transfer) and Capital One Quick Silver. Unfortunately out of loss of income and having to find another job, and all going into collections but I am proudly to say. I have about $3000 in debt cleared up between Kohls and Citibank cleared via settlements.

I recently got summoned for a lawsuit on me from capital one of the balance of being 7.2K. Mainly from interest and fees. I am working with a debt relief company to try to break down smaller payments, and to go to court. We just Filed a response, and got my first court date. Now we wait and hopefully come with an agreement, or maybe even better. It is effecting my new job a bit, due to me having to leave early and miss days to file the responses, and having to show up for court..

I am nervous, anxious and this is the first time ever having to go to court. I know this is the best since I can “begin” my life without feeling like a boulder is on my shoulder but this all has me stressed. I know also I have a long recovery on building my credit back up, but hopefully it all goes up from here.

Just wanted to vent.
Thanks for listening guys.

National debt relief/Gitmeid/safeguard law group

Question. I was with national debt relief for about two years and I got out of the program over six months ago and I never received a bill for any fees that I owed. Online portal shows that I owe fees. They only say pending. Do I still owe these? It does not say that in my contract specifically but I find it more weird that I haven’t been sent a bill or receive any calls about what I owe.

How did yall get rid of 25K debt with 60K salary?

I want to lock in and pay off my debt.
That means no eating out (maybe one a month I will)
No subscriptions
No buying clothes for now

Im 25K in debt & I only make 60K before tax. It’s horrible but I am a big spender. I want to lock in as much as possible and pay off majority of this debt.

Do you have any other advice?

Multiple hardship programs at once…

Hello all,

Long story short, I have $15k in CC debt spread across three cards.

I’m considering contacting each creditor (Chase, Discover and AMEX) and asking about hardship programs to reduce my monthly payment and interest rate as well.

My question, is it smart to apply for multiple programs at the same time or should I apply one card at a time?

I have a plan in place for next year or two that will allow me to tackle a good amount of it in 12-24 months, granted that I’m eligible to get on a program.

I’m hoping I can go this route instead of a DMP to avoid closing the account, although I am aware that creditors sometime only offer that option.

It seems like my mortgage will never end

I have $40,000 left on my mortgage for my rental property. It has an ARM and the rate is at 8% right now. It is the last of my current debt, before I go into massive debt on a primary residence as I’m renting right now. I’m also behind on saving for retirement. Day to day, week to week, month to month it seems like the progress is moving at a snail’s pace. I feel like maybe I’ll be able to rest when I’m dead at this point.

Help with debt

Long story short, my wife and I have always paid our credit cards off in full at the end of each month, regardless of our statement balance. Unfortunately, after years of fertility, we went through IVF and had to pay out of pocket…

I am in a predicament. I have 1 CC with a balance of ~7000 (statement balance). I have paid the minimum balance due to ensure no late payments at the very least.

I also have my ‘regular’ CC that I use for everyday purchases. A statement balance of ~800 is due 11/1, but my current balance is much higher.

Instead of paying the current balance at the end of the month like I normally do, should I just pay the ~800 statement balance and put the rest towards the ~7000 statement balance? I should be able to pay off ~4000 of the ~7000 going this route.

Paying off CC debt with HYSA?

I’m 26 and trying to figure out the smartest way to tackle my credit card debt.
Here’s my situation:
Credit card debt: Around $4,000
HYSA: Around $4,000
Checking: Projected to have $4,000–$5,000 left after all my bills are paid at the end of the month.
I’m tired of paying interest on my credit cards and want to get this debt taken care of without completely draining my savings.
My original plan was to take $1,500 from checking and another $1,500 from my HYSA, putting $3,000 toward the debt. That would leave me with around $1,000 in credit card debt while still keeping a decent cash cushion.
Would you approach this differently? Would you pay the entire $4,000 off immediately, or keep more money in savings and pay the remaining balance over time?
I’m trying to make the best financial decision while still having an emergency fund. Any advice would be appreciated!

Paid Off My $2,800 Worth of CC Debt!

A small win, but a win nonetheless!

I know $2,800 isn't the biggest debt, but it was weighing on me a lot before I paid it off. I amassed most of it during my senior year in college (I'm a recent college grad); I didn't want to miss out on grad week activities, but I also wasn't making money to pay for it. So, naturally, I put most of it on my credit card.

After I graduated, I got my first real job, and I was able to pay it off within the first two months of me working there. I decided to buckle down and cut my expenses as much as possible, and I put nothing else on my credit card besides car insurance. While being that strict and frugal wasn't fun, being debt-free makes it more than worth it. I used to scroll this sub looking for stories specifically like mine, so I figured that my story may help someone else like me.

Reasonable pace to clear debt

I have about 24k on a personal loan that I want to clear significantly earlier than the bank expects.

After mortgage/ mandatory bills, 300 committed for food, 150 on gas, and 250 for hobbies, I have a little more than 3k per month on average for saving/debt.

Is attacking the loan with 2500 a month too aggressive to be reasonable? I have little savings atm so maybe 2000, saving 1k, and getting it done in about a year?

I'm typically on top of my finances, but this last year has been hectic. I just want to see if there's something I'm not calculating for, or if I'm over thinking and being too passive.

Thanks!

Credit Card debt

I've 3 credit cards I'm sick of. Maybe $20 k in all in debt. Thinking of not paying one of them and then re negotiating a plan payback, cause ultimately I want to get rid of all credit card debt. Any tips or shortcuts to credit card debt other than bankruptcy. Thanks in advance.
