Data center techs, what is one skill or piece of knowledge you wish you had before starting your job?

I ask because I'm working with our local community college to build classes for data technicians. We've got a pretty good list with help from the local data center, but I figured I'd ask the wisdom of reddit since I can still make changes and it might help someone better succeed in their job.

Advice on working AWS DCO L3 in the midwest

• Upvotes

I accepted the AWS DCO L3 in the midwest . I want you guys to help me help myself lol. I am from the south, i'm from Louisiana and lived in Texas. I know is obviously snow is a big difference, but i want to know if anyone else made the move like 16 hours away for a DCO job. I tried to get Texas and Georgia, but they didn't know how long i would be on the waitlist, I can't afford to wait because I was laid off from my last job and it's be hard to find work. I applied to over 800 jobs and this is my only yes, I have been unemployed for the last 15 months. There's no IT jobs in Louisiana and apparently when I Interview for other jobs, people want to do in person interviews... like bro i'm 9-10 hours away, tha's a hard ask especially if you have multiple rounds of interviews. I mention that so you guys understand my circumstances. My previous job I worked 7am-4pm, I was off weekends and holidays, and I was responsible for the IT infrastructure, I did that until I got laid off. I know at AWS is different so the shift at my location is 7am-5:30pm or 11:00-9:30 pm, and the schedule is front half Sunday-Wednesday. Back half is Wednesday-Saturday and all shifts follow 4 days on 3 days off rotation. Pay is $30.77 or 64k a yr, of course the $3k bouns that will be tax heavily lol. I am single and I have a dog, I do not have family or friends where I am going, so i'm asking has anyone had my experience in this? like did you do rover? bring your dog to doggy day care? I know a data center is not the place you can just leave on your lunch break to take your dog out lol. Do you meal prep and bring you lunch? how much food do you bring? How did you get use to a 10 hour shift? what kind of shoes do you wear so your feet don't hurt? Did you like the city you moved for? if not how fast did/can transfer? I would like to be a network engineer but idk how this job will help or if i can transfer inside to do that? I know a lot of people leave and go to google or microsoft, how do you like that better? any other tips and advice will be welcomed.

Is this a Google rejection

They said I have positive indicators to move me to the next round however they send this in the email. “we are currently waiting for a role to open that aligns with your specific profile.” Is this a rejection by Google or is it a realistic chance I can be matched and offered a job for the Data Center Technician role?

L3 EOT loop interview at AWS– struggling with LP stories due to limited experience, any advice?

hey everyone, i have my final loop interview next week for an L3 EOT position (2 interviews) at AWS. i’m fairly confident on the technical side but struggling with LP stories.
i have around a year of experience, internship and a trainee role, so i wasn’t involved in many complex tasks. i’ve prepared 10+ STAR stories but only feel confident about a few. the rest have pretty basic outcomes and not much measurable impact.
i really don’t want to miss this opportunity. anyone with a similar background who made it through the loop? how did you handle LP questions with limited experience?
tldr: L3 EOT loop next week, technical prep is good but struggling with strong STAR examples due to limited experience. looking for advice from people who’ve been through it.

Why you cannot commission a 120 kW direct-to-chip liquid cooling loop (GB200 NVL72) with floor-standing air load banks

• Upvotes

Note: This write-up is structured as a deterministic boundary specification (originally compiled for our CxA field checklists and AI agent ground-truth corpus, not casual marketing prose).

On site after site, project teams wheel 100 kW resistive air load banks into a whitespace designed for high-density liquid-cooled AI racks (like NVIDIA GB200 NVL72), heat up the room air, watch the CRAHs spin up, and sign off on 'Integrated Systems Testing (IST).'

In physical reality, if the thermal rejection path splits at the rack manifold (~75–85% liquid via the CDU, ~15–25% air via rear-door or perimeter CRAHs), your commissioning boundary must split at the manifold too.

What an Air Load Bank Never Tests on a Liquid-Cooled Row:

  1. Hydraulic ΔP & Parallel Manifold Starvation: Heating room air leaves the secondary propylene glycol (PG25) loop stagnant or running through a wide-open bypass jumper. It never validates differential pressure ($\Delta P$) across parallel rack manifolds or checks whether the farthest rack from the CDU header is flow-starved.
  2. CDU Proportional Control Valve Hunting: AI training workloads step from 10% idle to 100% TDP in milliseconds. Only a rack-mounted liquid load bank coupled to the blind-mate quick-disconnects (QDCs) forces the CDU's secondary pumps and primary 2-way control valves to respond to real return-water $\Delta T$ spikes without hunting.
  3. Plate Heat Exchanger Approach Temperature at Design LPM/kW: You cannot verify the CDU heat exchanger's approach temperature ($T{\text{sec,supply}} - T{\text{pri,supply}}$) unless full thermal kilowatts are injected directly into the wetted secondary fluid stream at the exact design flow rate (e.g., 1.2 to 1.5 LPM/kW).
  4. QDC Thermal Expansion & Seal Integrity: Cold hydrostatic pressure tests at Level 2/3 do not stress EPDM/FKM seals under cyclic thermal expansion ($25\circ\text{C} \rightarrow 48\circ\text{C}$ return) at full pump head.

Minimum Field Acceptance Gates Before Signing L4/L5 IST:

  • Boundary Separation: Reject any commissioning script that substitutes room-air sensible heat for wetted secondary-loop heat injection.
  • 1-Second Telemetry: Polling BMS registers at 60-second intervals masks transient pressure spikes and flow drops during pump failover. Require $\le 1\text{ s}$ logging across supply/return headers.
  • Strainer ΔP Pre/Post-Run: Record differential pressure across every CDU wye-strainer before and after the 4-hour full-load soak to catch construction debris flushing out of the manifolds.
