Updated PSA - I found a crow on the ground, what do I do?

This was my first time making a flow chart so please be kind.

It is important that we as a community work together to provide a safe space to share in our love of corvids, and it is equally important that we educate members of the community new and old to help protect our feathered friends; with that being said, u/teyuna reached out to me pleading that changes be made to the previously pinned PSA, with their help/feedback I was able to create the flow chart below, I hope that this is an adequate and more encompassing pinned post.

I appreciate this community more than I am capable of expressing, thank you for making this the best damn sub on reddit. ;)

General questions Rural vs urban crows

Post image

I’m from a large urban city where crows were not terribly shy and feeding them was relatively easy if you were dedicated to it.

I now live in a very rural farming community town and the crows want absolutely nothing to do with humans. There are dozens in the air and at the tops of the 70 foot trees all around us but they stay far, far away from our house. It makes me happy that they are totally self sufficient and food is in abundance for them. I love watching their antics and listening to their calls. Like a crazy person I carry peanuts in all my pockets just in case an opportunity presents itself to feed them. So far I’ve befriended blue jays and chipmunks. No crows.

Should I accept that I will not have crow friends out here?

blue jay picture for attention since I don’t have any crow pics. 😢

Photography/Art [OC] I Could hang with bro all day

I ended up with 8 beach ravens.

I took a walk with a quart sized ziplock full of peanuts and was down to a handful when I had to call it quits to save some for the crows that come to me on the next block over.

The ravens seem aloof for now when they fly overhead. My crows are trained to come when I whistle. The Ravens haven’t made the connection yet and need to see me put peanuts out before they will come down from their perch.

This guy will get 5-6ft from me. Such a handsome gent.

Seeking advice/help What is the crow saying?

I started feeding/giving water to just one crow, beginning of August. I first noticed it was laying down, wings and beak spread wide open during the hot summer months. I felt bad and I started off by giving it water. It then started drinking it, bathing itself and then it tried flying away. But it came coming back. So I did the same, gave it water and then slowly started introducing fruits, peanuts, and walnuts.
For 2 1/2 months now, it started coming back, every day at the same time. Along with brining its friends! Sometimes in groups of 2-10+.
I have been making sure to leave fresh water, and now walnuts every day. Sometimes multiple times a day as my routine changed and they start to “call” me outside my window.
I have noticed that they follow me everywhere as well. Whether it was at work or to simply go to the store. Sometimes in a “murder” or alone, waiting for me as I walk outside from building to building.
As of late I have been staying home and I noticed that they have been waiting for me in some trees and they started to “call” me.
I went outside and started doing the call I do every time I try to get their attention. And also started talking to them as I do each time as well.
The last time I did this, the crow looked like it was dancing, up and down all the while tilting its head side to side.
But this time it started talking to me?
What is it saying?

My crow friends flying close to me now.

I have been feeding the crows in the park, raw unsalted peanuts, for about a couple of months now. They see me coming and they swoop in front of my vision and land on powerlines. When I see one, I say, “Hello Crow Friend!” without looking them in the eye, and set down two peanuts at a time (I have determined they cannot hold three in their mouth at once) about 10 feet apart from each other, so that they don’t fight over them. I keep walking after I drop the peanuts and don’t look back, but I hear them swoop down and sometimes some cawing.
I have been out of town for about a month and I was not sure if they would still be at the park. They flew to me right away when they saw me! This time, they got really close to me after they ate their peanuts. I could hear them with their soft, powerful wing flaps right next to my head. It was so special! I love them so much!

Storytime! Amazing crow event!!!

Post image

Im so damn ecstatic. It is surreal what just happened to me, so ofc I have to rant about it!!

So, Ive been feeding the crows for a while, taking a walk down to the water and placing out peanuts. Each and every morning, the previous days peanuts are gone. Yesterday there was a crow in the tree I have to pass under to gett o my feeding spot. And as I walked underneeth the tree, the crow scilently flew into some other trees.

I continued walking and was ASTOUNDED when I saw a crow sitting on my feeding rock, with a peanut inits mouth. It obvoiusly left as soon as I got close. But I do sing as I walk and there was no way it didnt know I was on my way.

And the fact that the tree crow didnt warn its friend makes me so happy. They obviously dont see me as a threat (theyve watched me put out food a billion times) and are getting more comftrable near me...

So after yesterdays win! You cannot imagine my happines over seeing 7 crows sitting in the trees above my feedingspot. Ive max seen 5 at the same time in all the time ivebeen doing this! So I grabbed ahandfull of peanuts, and went down to the feeding rock. Once I put down the nuts and whistled (as i usually do to let them know the food has been placed)

THE COOLES MOST EPIC THING THATS EVER HAPPENED TO ME HAPPENED

Out of the forest came 20-30 CROWS, They flew so close and low and flew past me out over the water and then back onto a few trees further away. It was literally a scene from a movie. Ive never seen anything like it.

I dont know what this means? they were so quiet and usually crows makesounds if they feel threatened. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!?!?!

I do think they recognizeme since I always wearmy bright pink pj hoodie when I goto feed them... What do u think this means????

Was this an initiation or just a coincidense? I usually see 1-2 crows in the tree, Ive been feeding them 1-2 peanuts a day. I know its them who eat it cuz the magpies in my area cant carry them, and there is tw crowshit left on the stones.

These are WILD hooded crows btw, the ones in central town are way more brave, minelive in theforest and are very wary of everything.

AAAAAH IM GOING CRAZY IT WAS SO COOL

Crows are my favourite creature ever, theyre the coolest and i love them if that wasnt obvoius

Dark beak and legs, so leucism rather than albinism I think. The others didn't seem bothered by it at all

What is this little (big) fella doing?

Sorry for the awful quality, I took this through the kitchen window.

I and my mom both feed the crows pretty much daily, and this fella likes to do whatever this is accompanied by the clicking of its beak.

(This video was taken after giving them food)

Seeking advice/help Found a crow that can't fly (UK based) help please

Post image
274 Upvotes

*update* Took it to a Medivet and they just called me saying that they've put the bird to sleep because it was emaciated and too far gone. Said it seemed like it hadn't eaten for days. I feel terrible now because maybe I should have kept it at home and tried to nurse it to health.

Hi! I found a crow today that I think needs help. My young dog found it, and usually crows fly away immediately as soon as she gets anywhere near...this one didn't. It hopped away and when it tried to fly it would tilt to one side and only manage a small hop and glide.

The park keepers said that it came to them yesterday and went inside their office, but they couldn't catch it.

It was quite reluctant on me getting it, but once I had it it didn't struggle.

It has some feathers picked out from behind its neck and it looks to be quite skinny and possibly young?

I have it in a cardboard box with holes and some water, in my bathroom in the dark because I thought it was quite stressed after getting caught, but I'm pretty certain that it needs help.

Will be calling some rescues now, but what else can I do? Did I do the right thing or did I take a bird that doesn't need help and should put it back? Any advice would be much appreciated!
