Mod Post Regarding Instagram / Petco animal neglect posts

Hi all, this is something that I didn't really want to discuss, but after the last 24 hours, I think it's finally time to address this. As of now, under Rule 7 (no spam or low effort posts), any posts that showcase screenshots from social media showing animal abuse, or pictures taken from inside pet stores (chain or not), will be removed as they offer absolutely no productive discussion value, and only exist to fuel hatred.

Instagram posts that show neglect of crested geckos (or other animals) have no place on this forum under any circumstance. The posts are always showing animals in distress, getting hurt or being intentionally antagonized for views. People come to this forum to get away from those sorts of things, not to be subjected further to it, and ultimately, our forum is for educating on proper and advanced husbandry and to help others out.

The mod team has seen especially in the last 24 hours that people are willing to condemn entire ethnic groups for how they keep animals a certain way. At the end of the day, that's racism, and myself and my team are not prepared to let this happen under our watch. Please understand that different countries have different cultures, and that includes husbandry practices for lots of different types of animals - you may not understand why or appreciate this, but encouraging mobs to mass report profiles and posting xenophobic comments is not what this community stands for. Please be better.

If you find disturbing content online, please do not post it here, report it to the relevant people on the platform it came from. The same goes for animals that are photographed in petstores like Petco, PetSmart, PetsAtHome, wherever. Unfortunately, this type of care is something that we know occurs, but we also know this is something that is out of our control. Talk to store managers, send reports to social media teams, but please do not bring it here where people are trying to avoid animal abuse.

If you have a genuine concern for an animal in distress, please report it to the appropriate authority if possible, and give as much detail as you can.

Any questions, please send myself or the modmail a message.

Cheers.

Remember to protect your cresties from ants!

During ant seasons when ants are all over your house eating all your food they also love your crested gecko’s food. Ants can swarm your gecko, biting them, stinging them, or walking all over them. They can cause severe stress to your gecko and can even kill fully grown crested geckos.

The best way i’ve found to protect my gecko is to put a layer of 100% pure petroleum jelly on the bottom rim of the tank or legs of the table holding his tank, anything touching walls or the floor that would be an access point for ants to get to the tank.

My son recently turned 6. I wanted him be able to have a cool creature to care for (for me to care for lol).

Did lots of research and settled on a crested. I found an awesome terrarium (recently discovered terranium is not a word?). It was a month before his birthday and that thing is was so large there was no point in trying to hide it so he got it about a month early. Did a bio enclosure, isopods and springtails, planted real plants, the whole nine yards.

We got our gecko, he named him Gambit from a Marvel Character. Into the terrarium he went. Kept an eye on him the first day, was impressed how quickly he disappeared. He was so, so small. A day or 2 goes by, I’m changing food out daily, misting, can’t find him, start to panic, remove everything, put it back, but a camera, nothing. There’s no way he got out, I’m the only one with access to open the door. 2 weeks go by, I feel like a terrible crested parent. I search the house just in case and nothing.

I get a new gecko. A small, temporary enclosure because this one, we shall call Gambit 2, is also so small. I hand feed, we bond, my son is in love and none the wiser, then one day I’m showering and he starts screaming “Gambits on the floor!” And he’s crying so I’m sure he’s a goner. But how did he get out of that tiny enclosure? I rush in, sure enough there he is on the floor and to my surprise he’s alive. I take him back to tiny enclosure to inspect the lid and lo and behold, there is Gambit 2, sitting on a vine practically waving at me. I have found Gambit 1 and he’s alive!

I frantically find a container, set it up and tell my son that he must have come in from outside. I have two geckos! He says to me. My lies are catching up with me. My son then renames the original Gambit 1 to Rogue (Marvel, iykyk) and it melts my heart. I guess we will figure this out and he will just have two. But then I start thinking about having two enclosures of the same size and do we have the space. Ultimately I discover my best friend’s daughter would want him and has done some outstanding research. I watch him for a few weeks to make sure he’s going to be ok after being out for 2 weeks and then off he goes and is now thriving.

He must have gotten out when I freaked out and took out all the decorations looking for him.

But as you can see we are huge marvel fans and
My 6 year old is currently in a contest for the Stan Lee Foundation’s Super Kid. If he wins and get his own character in a comic maybe I can convince them of adding a gecko 😜

Thanks for listening to my story! We are learning but getting there! I’ve taken a lot of advice from you all.

Hi! This is clover, he’s 6 months old and extremely picky. I’m making this post as he has been getting fuller, but his ribs are slightly showing and I’m wondering how concerning it looks? I’ve tried sooo many flavors and he’s hated every one of them, refuses to eat it from the bowl and sometimes even off my finger, he will eat crickets it’s just the flavours he hates.

the good news is the one I tried today he seemed to like!! He still won’t eat it on his own, but he didn’t run away from the food and actually seemed to enjoy it!! He actually TURNED his head towards the food other than away !!!

He’s been pooping once a day or once every other day, is very active and loving, and loves his enclosure I’m just wondering how he looks body wise?

Gecko whistling when breathing

Post image

I was handling my crested gecko when after a few minutes when it was silent I was able to hear a really really really tiny whistling sound after every breath she made. Like how a person would when breathing through their nose with a cold occasionally just only 100x quieter. She seems to be acting as she ever has I've noticed no differences.

Is this of any concerns? Or should I just monitor her over a couple days

hi this is my first crested, ive had her for almost 3 years now. we just recently moved and i have a new a job so i personally havent seen her a lot for a couple weeks. my boyfriend has fed her a dubia since then and shes been eating her crestie mix like normal. Well tonight she was finally out while I was awake and i took her out to look her over and say hi and noticed the spots on her nose. She’s never had anything like it before and, correct me if im wrong, it doesnt look like typical mouth rot? she did just recently start to root down in the soil and underneath a piece of cork bark I have down there. i tried to wipe off the dark spot w a q-tip with no change and it doesnt seem to hurt her. Her humidity stays consistently around 40-50 and i will mist in the morning and at night. does anyone have any wisdom or reassurance to offer? very anxious pet mother here.

We rescued this cute girl from Facebook marketplace today. She had no lights or heat mats and very little moisture. She’s only 8 grams! We are working on her little quarantine enclosure right now.
Does this look like tail rot?

First Time Bioactive Setup - Thoughts?

Hi! This is my first time setting up a bioactive environment for my gecko. Id love to hear people's thoughts! Any criticism, ideas, or recommendations are welcome.

It is an 18×18×36in tank

I also added about 20 isopods in there and gave them some time before i introduced him to his new tank but its been weeks and im scared he has eaten them 😮‍💨 he likes to explore the ground often. i never see them anymore and I tried checking under some wood I had for them and the last few times I haven't seen anyone down there. Im hoping they are maybe borrowed somewhere? But I put a slice of strawberry out and so far just springtails have gone for it. Maybe I should do a carrot slice instead?

I've been adding more clutter little by little though. When I first got him in there he only really was sticking to the glass walls. But he's been liking that top corner a lot lately.

Ps: not sure how I feel about that big moss vine just yet. I set it up last night but i had rinsed it down and it also got wet from spraying and it kind of stinks 🫤 i may not keep it.

She jumped into the tank and landed like this. You wouldn’t believe me if I didn’t snap a quick pic

Crested Gecko Handling Advice

I got my first crested gecko about a month ago and he is almost 3 yrs old. I am wondering if any of your crested geckos took a while to allow you to handle them?

The previous owner told me he would handle them all the time. Right now, he is still quite scared of me but will eat from my spoon, and can tolerate my hand inside the enclosure, but hasn’t allowed me to hold him yet.

He has been eating normally and is super active when we are sleeping ever since we got him. I am just needing some reassurance that taking some more time for handling is normal as I’ve seen posts and videos where people have held their cresteds after 2 weeks. I‘ve posted elsewhere and didn’t get much info.

Any additional advice is appreciated! Please be nice 🙏

Help with tank

I’m planning on getting a crested gecko. I already have the tank that I’m sure will work well (especially for the crestie’s size), but I need suggestions on other stuff, like soil, decor, etc. Try to keep the suggestions relatively cheap (not cheap, but not super expensive) and easy to find, like on Amazon or something similar. Any suggestions or help are greatly appreciated!

Two of our Gecko's Passed Within Week of One Another. Illness?

As the title says, sadly, my girlfriend's Leechie gecko passed last week on Saturday. Today, I looked in my one-year-old crestie's tank and found her lifeless at the bottom of the tank, slightly curled body and with sunken eyes (like my gf's gecko). We fed them pangea every day, kept the heat at a proper temperature (usually around 76 degrees for my crestie), gave them the proper space and hiding spots, and made sure they were properly eating and using the restroom. I never spotted any glaring issues with either of them prior, other than my crestie being unusually fired down a lot in the last 4-5 months and maybe a little bit less active when in and out of her tank, compared to when I first got her. I'm just not sure what to think right now and I have no idea what to do other than quarantine my living gecko's tank to prevent her from getting a possible illness and spending a lot more money than i'd like to get a necropsy and vet visit for the survivor (and potentially my other snakes/lizards too since everyone's in the same room). I of course am gonna take any vets advice over reddit. I just wanted to come in here to see if anyone else has experienced something like this. Neither looked impacted, like they had eggs that were stuck, neither looked prolapsed, i didn't see any mites or worms on them or in their stool, and neither looked like they were scratched or had broken bones. Is it reasonable to assume this is an invisible disease that may spread to the rest of my reptiles? I included photos of them from not too long ago. Rest peacefully Bug and Power.

Seeking advice!

I’m a first time crestie owner and have done a lot of research but am feeling a little confused. I got this little guy over the weekend at NARBC, he just caught my eye and I couldn’t say no. Seller was quite busy and wasn’t able to tell me exactly how old he is but said a 10 gal enclosure would be good. I didn’t realize just how tiny he is compared to other pictures i see of baby geckos. He is about 8 cm long from nose to tail and my kitchen scale doesn’t even register his weight in grams; not sure if this is an issue with the scale or if he’s really that tiny. I’ve been feeding him basic crestie food but have a few flavors of pangea coming in the mail because he has barely eaten. My questions are:
Would anyone be able to estimate how old he is?
Should I change his enclosure size/put paper towel on the bottom instead of substrate?
Any advice is much appreciated. He seems to enjoy being held and is quite docile, often jumping into my hand if im moving something in the enclosure, but I don’t want to overhandle him if that’s a thing for little baby geckos. Side note, could anyone identify what morph he is? Just curious.
I want to make sure I am doing everything I can to keep him comfortable and happy.

Edit: thanks for the advice all! The pangea came in the mail and he ate some off my finger yay <3

She’s been staying like this for 3 days and I never see her moving around, even at night
I have her for 2 weeks not and she lately started eating when I take her out and hand feed her with a spoon
She also pooped so I think she should be healthy 🤔

Taking her to the vet for the first time. any advice?

Post image
15 Upvotes

i rescued my girl back in march in a rehoming situation. she was taken great care of before hand and fully healthy, so I have held off on a vet. I’m taking her for the first time next week for a check up / wellness visit because i noticed her poops being less solid the last few days.

i haven’t been able to handle her in a while because she’s always hiding during the day and i don’t want to scare her or force her to do anything she doesn’t want to do. since she’s in the same spot each morning, im just planning on gently picking her up and putting her in her carrier. i’ll have a little hide and leaves for her and it’ll be laid with paper towel.

i’m just worried about her being scared from the traveling and inspection :( i know all geckos are different, but any advice on how past visits for you guys went would be greatly appreciated!

Is this normal humidity behavior for a bioactive tank?

So in my tank for some reason the humidity wil just not go above 70% when misting using my automister even when I let it spray extra and spray a bit by hand extra, and then nearing the end of the morning when I first checked on the tank the glass was still covered in water and some places where stil wet/damp and the humidity raised to just under 80%
