Oxygen Forensics

We've been looking into them as a vendor, but found some things that are giving me pause - for one, their website seems to be completely broken. Can't navigate to it, and an email got bounced back to us, also seeing a bunch about Russian ties..is there any merit to those rumors?

Yes, they do come from Russia. Here’s their Russian counterpart: mko-systems.ru

Don't do it. It might be ok, but if it isn't, you will take the hit.

Yeah I tried to warn you. We all saw it coming.

For what it's worth, I'm no longer permitted to use it. Lol. Loved that tool though.

They don’t have the ability to be a vendor anyhow. Everything is frozen. Albeit, their license keys still work right now.

I can’t post a photo but I may have gotten the last of Oxygen Forensics swag (coffee cup and lanyard)

That is until the software is rebranded somehow under new ownership

Yeah the news killed any interest we had, and if they do rebrand at some point it won't matter really, any new company will come under a huge amount of scrutiny until they can prove they aren't former Oxygen.

But I think it’ll be less about the software itself as much as it’s the financial backing.

The software (from my understanding) is legit. And to be fair to OF they have helped capture or prosecute a lot of bad people with the software.

I’m not an advocate for them by any means (they don’t have assets to pay me to be lol) but I would absolutely use it if it were bought by someone else.

I think the greater concern in the government space is whether there's any communication back to Russia built into the software, because my understanding is that it's not financed by Russia but also built on the Russian built program, mko-systems.ru. Unless they go open source, I'd think the trust is completely gone.

I think that’s probably a good point. Unless maybe Magnet or Cellebrite buy it?

I don't think they touch it, given how radioactive Oxygen is, in a space where trust is paramount above literally anything else, it'd be a bold move for either of them to make a move like that

Touché! Great point.

I visited their Alexandria office years ago when they were demo-ing Oxygen for my agency. It was very apparent back then that they were either a Russian company or had significant ties. So yeah, this is not surprising in the least.

Wait was this not known? I swear I remember hearing about this. I've been out of the industry since mid 2024 and I swear I remember other vendors talking about this at FLETCE 2024
