Thank you Cologne.

Just wanted to say thank you.

We came for a stag do this weekend, what a beautiful city you have.

The atmosphere everywhere was amazing, friendly and relaxed. Everywhere we went we were made to feel welcome and they made a huge fuss of my brother (the stag)

Couldn’t recommend it enough as a city - we will be back for a non boozy weekend to sight see too!

Events Best pubs for live music and improvisational jam nights?

Looking for live music spots this week. A pro musician friend of mine is visiting, and I'd love to show him the local scene. Do any pubs or bars at Cologne have open stage nights or improvisational jam sessions where guests can plug in and play? Open to any genre but extra points to Jazz, Blues !

Hallo liebe Gruppe,

Wohnen / housing Solidarisches Wohnen in Köln

Tagsüber entwirft man quasi seinen eigenen DnD Charakter (Tränke brauen, Waffen basteln/bauen etc.)

Flour on church roofs story?

Years ago, a friend living in Cologne told me a story, and I’d enjoy hearing if there’s any truth to it.

He said that, in World War 2, sometimes enemy fighter pilots dropped flour onto church roofs. It seemed like a sign of respect, but actually was used as a tactic; white roofs were easier to see. Because the Cologne cathedral itself was so unique, it could be used for navigating from the air.

I’ve seen other mentions online of the cathedral being used for orientation, but nothing about flour, in Cologne or anywhere else. Any ideas?

Diskussion 31M moving to Cologne in a few weeks for my master's. What should I expect?

Hello everyone,

I'm 31, Turkish, and I'll be moving to Cologne in 2-3 weeks to start a master's at Uni of Köln. I've never been to the city before, but I've heard only good things and I'm really excited. My friends in near cities have only had good things to say about it, and I keep hearing that it's a young and diverse city.
Life in Turkey has been getting harder every year, both economically and socially, and as a neurodivergent, progressive person I just don’t feel like I belong there anymore. For someone with my mindset it’s really hard to be happy there, and honestly the last two years have been a struggle with major depression. So this move means a lot to me.

I'm pretty open-minded and easy-going person and I like meeting new people form different background and different perspectives and I wonder how social things are in Cologne generally? Any “stuff you should know before you move” kind of tips would be great, whether it’s making friends, dating or just everyday interactions.

I'd also love to know what the part-time job market is like for a non-EU student. My German is basically nonexistent right now, but I'm planning to start studying seriously so I'm also wondering how far I can get with English in the meantime.

Thanks in advance!

Recommendations for UX/UI or digital design courses near Cologne (in English)?

Hi everyone! I recently lost my job and am considering further training to strengthen my skills and continue developing my career in digital design.

I’m based in Cologne and looking for courses taught in English that could be funded through a Bildungsgutschein from the Agentur für Arbeit.

Can anyone recommend reputable schools or courses with a good reputation among employers? I’m open to UX/UI and other relevant areas of digital design.

Thanks for any advice!

Diskussion Moving to Cologne sight unseen

Hello everyone,

I apologize ahead of time if I sound naive. As the title suggests, I am considering moving to Cologne next year and for various reasons I have to make this decision without visiting Cologne. Thus I need to know everything, good, great, bad, ugly from you about your favorite city. Here is the context: I am a 34F scientist and I have been offered a professorship at the medical center/university which I am excited about. I currently live in the US but I am not an American. The offer itself is really great and all my potential colleagues are really supportive and excited for me to join. However they only have great things to say about Cologne (most have spent their whole lives there) which makes me skeptical. I have visited Germany but not Cologne and I don’t speak German, though I will definitely learn if I move there. I will be moving with my partner and my two cats. None of us are white or European (including the cats lol). I have friends in Cologne and nearby, so il have some support system but it still seems a really big decision to make. What are some of the things I should consider? I have lived outside my homeland for over a decade so I am not necessarily worried about moving to a new country, but I am worried about potential racism, not knowing German and well the culture. Is Cologne welcoming to foreigners? How do you millennials find friends? Where should I rent? Any thoughts and ideas are welcome. I truly want to learn about your city and if any part of the post sounds judgmental I apologize.

Good tattoo shops in Cologne for a first tattoo?

Hey folks!

I'm planning to get my first tattoo and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good tattoo studio in Cologne.

I'm thinking of getting something relatively small, around 5 × 5 cm. Also, for those who've gotten tattoos in Cologne, what's a reasonable price to expect for something that size?

Would appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences. Thanks :)
