Forever Wowhead's chief dataminer: "Personally, I think the community reaction may have made Blizzard reconsider [...] We datamined these mounts directly from the WoW Forever client. They're not present in Retail 12.1.7 or any other Classic client, not even as encrypted assets."
So these mounts are apparently intended for Retail (Or China Exclusive), not WoW Forever. Interesting.
Personally, I think the community reaction may have made Blizzard reconsider, and if that's the case, I see it as a good thing.
But here's what makes this interesting. We datamined these mounts directly from the WoW Forever client. They're not present in Retail 12.1.7 or any other Classic client, not even as encrypted assets.
I also have a hard time believing Blizzard accidentally pushed the decryption keys for these specific mounts through a hotfix.
And then there's the other curious stuff in the Forever client: the FisherFalk armor set, Pinky pet, Baby Murloc Thrall, and even an encrypted Mecha Devilsaur mount. These assets already exist in Retail, yet they're present in Forever too, encrypted with entirely new keys.
Did Blizzard see the community's reaction and reconsider their plans? That's just my personal theory, and I could be completely wrong.
But if datamining gave players a chance to voice their opinions, and Blizzard actually listened and adjusted their plans, I'd call that a win for everyone.
Maybe datamining isn't always the villain of the story after all. 🫡

WoWHead also not too long ago incorrectly read the wrong EXP Tables in the Game and claimed Blizzard lied about that too.
Frankly right now the WoWHead Datamining Team continue to lose credibility from me not the other way around.

u/Plastic-Lemons 3h ago
They also thought that runes from SoD were coming back due to them misreading the first patch day datamine
•
•
u/The_Dunk 3h ago
Yeah their credibility hasn’t been awesome lately. Honestly bros are probably just asking Claude to run their data mining processes for them and aren’t checking its work at all.
It’s possible for sure but I see little advantage Blizzard could gain by lying in this scenario.
•
u/SirSaltie 3h ago
Devs may also just be porting in retail/new assets with the intent of telling the art team to adjust them. Data mining means nothing until we see the live game.

it's so easy to browse reddit while working.
it's like i think one of many reason people can stomach having this thing called "job" (derogatory).
Never understand the "You browse internet too much, you must be unemployed" type insult. If you're someone that had to be active sure, like being a moderator? idk how difficult datamining wow is though. never looked into it. Maybe you can do that while working too.
Here i am playing WoW, browsing internet AND working at same time.
I salute people whose work require full attentions though.

u/_BreakingGood_ 5h ago
why are they just ignoring the fact that their data mined slop posts have had many many different errors every single week? what's different about this particular one?
•
u/rufrtho 4h ago
A lot of datamined info contains vestigal entries, like abilities or items that were tested for WoW Forever and then cut. This is normal and expected.
However, the bluepost for the mounts specifically said they were "not intended for this version of World of Warcraft." This is unusual because the mounts were not found in any other version.
It suggests that Blizzard may have intended it for Forever and then changed their minds.
•
u/idkmanfiller 2h ago
It seems more likely that it's for 12.2 or some other future version of Midnight and was correctly cleaned from 12.1.5 or whatever, but they didn't think to do it for Forever (which is forked from the modern client) because the mounts aren't for that version
•
u/wartortlechortle 4h ago
Or maybe they intended it for retail and snuck it into Forever to see what data people were digging into.
Not the worst way to see where things are coming and going.
•
u/GuyWithFace 3h ago
Could also simply be that Forever is a branch of the retail build. Forever was updated more recently than retail was, and it's possible the mounts were added to the database between the time retail and forever were each updated.
•
u/wartortlechortle 3h ago
That too.
There's many legitimate reasons it could have appeared without being a stupid conspiracy theory.
•
u/keyboardturn 3h ago
i'm just gonna mention, firstly obviously this (Stiven's post) was written by AI, secondly we have no idea which client it's intended for (retail or otherwise). we can speculate, but "these mounts are apparently intended for Retail" is an assumption/leap of Claude. I personally believe they could be for the China client but again nothing to support that yet.
Gonna be real idk why he does what he does but Stiven has liked to do this sort of flaming bait shit to rile everyone up. I'm a dataminer myself, i don't post much on Classic tbh, but i usually know when to shut the fuck up about what i don't know or other stuff that should remain under wraps, he likes to purposefully poke the metaphorical classic bear and "hint" at certain things to get people mad. maybe his brain is cooked by AI or some shit idk. He basically purposefully posts misinformation, and this time Blizz had to clarify about it because of his antics. It's really annoying to see and makes everyone look bad.
•
u/MotorGlittering5448 2h ago edited 1h ago
I'm so glad someone else brought this up.
I remember before Stiven was employed by Wowhead, he was often on MMO Champion's forums posting what he had datamined. His findings were often at the center of speculation for each patch and expansion on those forums.
MMO Champion is also fairly toxic and divisive, and that hasn't ever really changed. I'm sure he got used to some positive attention for finding stuff before most other people, and it seems like he enjoyed seeing the chaos unfold from what he datamined on the forums. Seems he still likes doing that today on Twitter and whatever else.

Its posts like these that cause Blizzard to regret interacting with the community. They could have ignored everything and done what they wanted. Instead they gave us more info. Spitting on that attempt at good will is bad form.
41
u/DrainTheMuck 5h ago
What? Isn’t the post just saying “seems like Blizz listened to feedback”? How is that spitting on them? lol
56
u/WrongOpinionOnly 5h ago
No, it is indirectly calling Blizzard liars. The dataminers are insinuating that the mounts were made for Forever because thats where they datamined them.
21
u/Various_Necessary_45 5h ago
So you agree it may just have been intended to release into Forever then?
→ More replies (1)•
u/WrongOpinionOnly 4h ago
Possibly. Next time Blizzard will just leave us in the dark and avoid giving the 'chief dataminer' a reason to stroke his own ego.
•
u/Various_Necessary_45 4h ago
You're very fixated on that part, idc about the guy but the information he provides is still interesting: if the mounts only exist on the Forever client, chances are they were intended to go live there, and therefore Blizzard lied and listened to feedback.
•
u/WrongOpinionOnly 4h ago
What is your point? I do not agree with the narrative the dataminer is pushing and believe posts like this are part of why Blizzard avoids communicating with players as much.
•
u/lingzhui 4h ago
You are treating Blizzard as if it were a mentally ill person with trust issues instead of a multi million dollar company pushing products
•
u/WrongOpinionOnly 4h ago
Nope, I am treating this 'chief dataminer' being childish as being childish and negative for the community.
•
•
•
u/Various_Necessary_45 4h ago
Blizzard should avoid communicating with players too much, but these kinds of things is not the reason. Adding giant chicken mounts to a game that's supposed to be respectful of the origin of the game is laughable. Feedback that that's a terrible idea is warranted. If the playerbase knows whether it was a mistake or not they will more accurately be able to give feedback to change what gets added in the future.
•
u/WrongOpinionOnly 4h ago
Okay and they gave us clarification on the mounts. This dataminer should have been quiet and taken the win. Making some snarky post like this is childish towards Blizzard when they just gave us clarifying info.
•
u/Various_Necessary_45 4h ago
People believing it was a mistake means they'll let it go, if they're aware that it's a lie (if true) they'll be able to give clearer feedback on it. Shouldn't be hard to understand.

Community focused gameplay... well not really.
etc, etc, etc.
17
u/Jordanel17 5h ago
I didnt read anything about this post as spitting at blizzard. This to me sounds like a rally to the playerbase to continue voicing their opinions because they matter and blizzard listens.
30
u/WrongOpinionOnly 5h ago
The 'chief dataminer' is insinuating the assets were for Forever and Blizzard lied about that. This isn't a rally, its a brag from dataminers about what they think blizzard did.
•
u/Various_Necessary_45 4h ago
It can be both.
•
u/WrongOpinionOnly 4h ago
Why are you defending this dataminer stroking his own ego? Blizzard clarified things and that should have been it. Making up some sort of conspiracy is childish
•
u/Various_Necessary_45 4h ago
Why do you even care about the guy? Blizzard 'clarifying' can be them lying and listening to feedback about mounts that don't fit into Forever at all.
The playerbase being aware of that possibility means they're able to predict what types of cosmetics Blizzard will try to add.
•
u/WrongOpinionOnly 4h ago
I care because this dataminer will rally people like you into believing some story he made up to make himself sound important. Blizzard will then be more cautious communicating with all of us.
•

Its clear the feedback was very against those mounts, and we had lots of you people saying 'durr hurr the mounts are fine' simultaneously. Even in the comments in this thread there's a couple people saying the mounts were fine.
And now when they potentially rowed back on this, because they were clearly very unpopular, once again, we have you people saying 'nuh uh it was never supposed to be in the game anyway'.

•
u/Pollia 4h ago
What moved goalposts?
The mounts got data mined.
Blizzard directly says they were meant for retail and not for forever.
Dataminer effectively calls blizzard a liar.
The original goal post was always "datamining, especially in forever, is somewhat unreliable currently so take it with a grain of salt" and blizzard had now directly stated they're not for Forever.
Where's the moved goal post?
•
u/xiaopewpew 3h ago

•
u/SystemofCells 4h ago
The datamining community is throwing a bitch fit because Blizzard has taken steps to make them less useful.
Stuff from different versions cross contaminates. More in encrypted than in the past. They might even be planting false stuff. Dataminers are pissed cause they used be able to consistently catch Blizzard with their pants down, now they can't.
So calling Blizzard liars for communicating on this feels pretty scummy.

The WoW community has a bad reputation for being pay piggies and slurping up whatever MTX daddy blizz throws in a SUBSCRIPTION GAME. When people did push back against MTX in TBC Classic with the /spit debacle, blizzard censored the emote to protect their piggies and forced more and more MTX into Classic. They don't respect their players.
The fact they can re-release a scuffed version of vanilla again with minor changes that look embarrassing when compared to Classic + private servers and have it become their largest launch ever should be enough money for them. But no, they want MTX on day 1.

•
u/TubaStinky 4h ago
Dumb ass reasoning on their part. Forever is the version of the game with the most active development going on so it stands to reason that the currently available beta client is much newer than the builds being used in Classic and retail at the moment, which could definitely mean assets are in that client that are not in other versions yet.
•
u/bronzekobold 4h ago

•
u/beenbanned109times 2h ago
Hardly anything in retail vanilla was discovered by encountering it in game, there was datamining going on, you just didn't know where to look.
•
u/Blashtik 2h ago
The difference from then and now is that back then most people had no idea where to look and weren't likely to stumble on people talking about it. Now, you just have to browse reddit and you'll see people openly discussing the datamined stuff. The chicken mount post that's up right now on this subreddit is a media post that isn't spoiler tagged.
It's simply more difficult to avoid being spoiled by datamined info rather than getting to discover it. Even if you avoid reddit, the forums, and of course wowhead, the normalization of treating this info as open means that friends/guildies are also likely to casually drop the info on you.

For profit companies generally shouldn't sacrifice the quality of their product to increase profits. Its shortsighted and sacrifices long term profits for short term ones. Its how private equity is ruining so many beloved brands lately.
Much better to focus on the quality of your product, and let the increased profits come from growing your market.
•
u/Burrito_Pls 49m ago
That is a very cute outlook.
•
u/Protip19 40m ago
Why? Its true. Do you think Nintendo would be making a good business decision by adding microtransactions to the new Ocarina of Time remake?

No, why? Weird question. Curious what point you think you're making with it.
•
u/Burrito_Pls 24m ago
"For profit companies generally shouldn't sacrifice the quality of their product to increase profits" is your claim. If you believe this is true and you can prove it, you should find work fixing the business plan for the plethora of billion dollar companies who disagree. Or you can accept that they actually have the data on it and understand the trade-off they are making to sacrifice quality for profit and have determined it to be a worthwhile trade off. Your feelings surely know more than the people who actually have the numbers.

How about they put them in there and “leaked” the keys just to gauge the scale of the negative reaction? Knowing they’d be immediately datamined. These kinda “leaks” happen all the time. 🙄

This beta needs to hurry up and end and this game needs to hurry up and release so I can watch this subreddit melt down when everyone loses their characters.

This beta should run for another 6month because its rushed! and there is many problems with just classes

True tbh. They rushed this release and it’s going to be very scuffed on release. Also layering is ass

That's some genius move by Blizzard.
Asking how the community feels about it in Forever without having to actually ask.

I mean, it could also be intentional poisoning of the well to data-miners, to make people question the authenticity of their information. I don't think Blizzard particularly likes them, because it causes data-miners to be the first to release new information about content. By placing unused assets into the files, knowing data-miners will find it and publish it, then saying "jk - we weren't actually going to put that into the game", causes players to take data-mined info with a grain of salt.
Having said that, if Blizzard is trying to gauge interest in this covert way, it doesn't surprise me at all of the community's reaction to it. Many people view Forever as Classic+ or at least the closest thing to it, and the flashy bullshit of retail is one thing they really do not like.

I have slowly been losing all faith in wowhead. It's a toxic site that has been milking the users for all they're worth. The breathless reporting and data mining has got to stop.
Let the game breathe, focus on the people instead of countless fluff articles that do nothing to add to the conversation.

now they just have to convince the retail team to at least put them in their data storage for the next patch so it looks convincing

“But if datamining gave players a chance to voice their opinions, and Blizzard actually listened and adjusted their plans, I'd call that a win for everyone.
Maybe datamining isn't always the villain of the story after all.”
Maybe if this story I’ve completely made up is true, I am a hero after all

Isn't Murloc Thrall from retail? Why wouldn't a baby version be for retail...?

The whole concept of data mining just rubs me the wrong way as a dev. Considering the amount of times random shit gets left in the source code that might make it into a build, it’s no wonder they might interpret something completely differently than reality

Blizzard aren’t making any decisions that quickly, wowhead is absolute garbage as well when they used to be great

Dataminer justifies data mining. Shocking.
Maybe people overreact and are now trying to justify their actions.

Yeah let’s scrap all the fun content because crybabies want classic era “forever”

A mecha devilsaur would be kinda cool actually. Too big to be a mount though. Maybe as a dungeon or raid boss.

this is the same guy who told us forever exp to 60 was nerfed by 30% and then turns out he was looking at legion exp values instead btw

Retail WoW used to have Ion do monthly updates and videos, and his words would often inspire hope that positive change would be coming. However, his words very rarely matched the action.
The WoW forever dev interviews and podcasts have matched that same energy. Their words do not match their actions. I will attempt to remain cautiously optimistic, but I don't actually believe their team is capable of thinking outside of a modern/retail sort of perspective.

Blizzard also came out and said take any data mine with a grain of salt since they are putting in stuff they won't be using as to throw off the results.

Please reconsider again.
I need Blizzard to add more shop mounts. There are thousands and thousands of new players on Nov 4 that have never played WoW, and these players have disposable income. Same with WoW players who are returning for WoWF.
And honestly, I really want that big red rooster. It looks good on gnome.
Q4 report is due in 2 months. Pump those earnings up with store mounts.

My guess is they are for China but got shipped in our build as well
I've never played on China but I would guess they love spending money and don't care about SD models
