Forever The PvP Episode ft. @TipsOutBaby & @Savixirl | Episode 4 - The WoW: Forever Podcast

Shoutout to Countdowntoclassic, the host of the podcast.
These streamers come on and really dilute their feedback with praise and seem to be really timid when trying to voice the rabid concerns that they share on their own streams.
Countdowntoclassic really tries his best to push them to actually just speak their mind.
The layering issue is so unbelievably massive for PvP that I'm sad it got kinda glossed over, but I appreciate the effort from Josh (CDTC) in pushing all of the community hot topics.
Josh, if you're reading this, please continue to pursue podcasting. You're an incredible host, like goddamn.

Cheers mate, I really appreciate you taking the time for the kind words. Most people don't realise Countdown To Classic has been going really strong all these years on Spotify and never stopped, just cranked out an epic 4 hour episode on the Shaman issues in Forever straight after I got out of the official recording, no rest for the wicked haha

Episode #63 with John Staats before the 2019 Classic release was one of the most memorable podcasts I've ever listened to. Thanks for that.

you are the best part of these podcasts. personally I can't stand the streamer to blizzard unholy alliance right now but you at least make it bearable. also for the love of god please push them further on the layers / phasing issue. one of wows core identity pillars in 2004 was I can walk anywhere in the world with the same people, yet now people pop in and out like ghosts. it's horrible

Out of all things he has said or done, I genuinely don't think it's fair to dog someone for working for their own father from when they were a minor to a late teen and that father commits fraud and they we're a part of it. Not only are people that age impressionable, but especially so when it comes to their literal father figure who they likely trust more than anyone else.
Of course he's guilty of it, just circumstances makes it a whole lot less damning than if he had set up a company and planned it all out himself.

He used to make videos about how vanilla wow was SO MUCH HARDER than retail around the time Nost got shut down. He effectively gaslit people into believing vanilla wow was something it wasnt and people started going to him for takes on vanilla wow.
Of course he proved himself to be a massive tool when classic released and people realized he was full of shit the entire time.

“We don’t want to split the RP community because we want a critical mass of players to encourage social interaction and world PvP, it’s for the greater good”
Yeah okay, that’s working out great when I’m trying to do PvP events and I’m sharding in and out the whole time and I can’t recognize any names of the people I play with because they stop existing five minutes later when they’re thrown into a new layer. Fostering that social interaction and wpvp real good there guys. I’m so glad RP-PvP died for this.
Also I know Aggrend has a huge boner for streamers but every single time they don’t provide anything fucking valuable at all for these podcasts, like why are they here?? And then they invite this dumbfuck Tipsout??
19
u/Xefjord 1d ago
The sharding issue and the RP-PvP issue are two totally separate issues. Tim said they are taking the sharding problems very seriously and rushing to get out fixes. That doesn't change the fact the RP-PvP has an incredibly high chance of just becoming a second PvP server first, and hurting roleplay capabilities on both RP rulesets at the same time through splitting the community. All the stuff they brought up made sense, even if it isn't what RP-PvP fans (Myself included!) wanted to hear.
→ More replies (7)8
u/Skramzkid 1d ago
Sure they make sense but I think it’s a terrible decision to let one of the most amazing communities I’ve been apart of have to be split between choosing if they want a PvP server or an RP server more, which will already potentially divide the player bases. I also think it’s unfortunate that our community is the one that has to kick rocks when no other community is being forced to have to pick between what they want. I’d far prefer to play on a lower pop RP-PvP server than have to deal with the streamer megaserver and the unplayable environment that will be for the first month or two of the game.
Also I knew I recognized your name, I use the Russian Anki deck you built. Great work thank you for it lol
→ More replies (3)3
u/Xefjord 1d ago
Kind of a lose lose situation to me. RP-PvP would definitely be the go to server for me if it existed, but now I like many others are going to have to have characters across multiple rulesets in order to enjoy all the ways of playing the game I would normally engage in. I really don't like that. But I also really don't see a way RP-PvP is going to work just slapped on without substantial changes to how their rulesets work. They said its not forever off the table. So we will see how things pan out.
And glad my flashcards were able to help! Most of my time is spent consulting for language learning apps more than making flashcards, but the language learning companies really like to drag their feet so I got frustrated and just made my own small little thing. I don't expect 90% of those decks to be used (I cover some really obscure languages) but if it helps even one person then I consider it a success :)
18
u/Annual-Gas-3485 1d ago
Conclusion: they're clueless about what makes a pvp server community great and the long-term value of such, because they've never experienced it.

2
u/cheesequake2000 1d ago
I was hoping they would add some sort of RP 'flag' or something you could just add to yourself on the PvP server, so it would more likely (but not exclusively) layer you with other RP-flagged people.

Summary thanks to Astra:
The video is “The PvP Episode” of the WoW: Forever Podcast, featuring Savix and Tips Out alongside the developers. I reviewed its auto-generated transcript.
The main message: They want PvP to retain Classic’s spontaneous battles, unusual items, and community rivalries, while improving performance, rewards, and matchmaking.
- Choose your realm rules carefully. Free movement between PvE and PvP rulesets is unlikely because it could undermine faction balance. There are no immediate plans for RP-PvP, largely because of concerns about splitting the smaller RP community. 1:22
- Large world battles are a priority. Server performance has improved, and they’re continuing work on problems such as raid members being separated into different layers. 11:06
- They’re cautious about rated arenas and battlegrounds. They want PvE gear, professions, consumables, and quirky items to remain relevant in PvP. Highly competitive systems could push class balance and progression away from that approach. More battlegrounds are planned, but specific ideas mentioned aren’t promises. 16:35
- World PvP should grow from valuable things to fight over. Rare materials and recipes should create natural hotspots. World bosses and events inspired by Season of Discovery are being explored, without firm commitments on their implementation. 26:34
- Ordinary ganking and camping will remain part of PvP realms. They favor players organizing protection and retaliation. Cheating and exploits are different, and structured events could include temporary resurrection protection. 35:26
- Alterac Valley shouldn’t dominate the honor grind. They’ve reduced its relative profitability and boosted other battlegrounds. Premades should face premades, while solo players and small groups face similar opponents; exact group thresholds are still being tuned. 41:58
- The big reveal is a Mount Hyjal dueling arena. It’s being made available for the community tournament’s top 32, with supporting vendors and a possible cooldown-reset NPC. It isn’t confirmed as a freely accessible launch feature. Future dueling spaces are something they want to develop without emptying existing public gathering spots. 54:23
The most concrete takeaways are battleground reward rebalancing, premade matchmaking, continued world-PvP improvements, and the tournament arena. Rated competition, expanded world events, and permanent dueling facilities remain much less definite.
15
u/mac_XL95 1d ago
I dont like how they arent commiting on record to SoD style world pvp events, those i think were the best part of SoD and the best part of pvp in WOW is large scale events in the overworld instead of sending everyone off to their own instanced BGs. Dynamic world pvp events that get us out into the world should be the prime focus of pvp in WoW forever tbh. Blizz really seems to be missing the mark when it comes to making the world feel alive and giving players a reason to leave cities at 60.
22
u/Bartizanier 1d ago
These guys are going to give AV the same heavy-handed treatment as dungeon XP and make it so nobody wants to play it anymore, aren't they?
Never any middle ground with blizz. Figure out a solution.
9
3
u/onlyheretobehelpful 1d ago
I'm honestly okay with that, people don't even play AV as a pvp event anymore it's just rush the bosses and ignore everything else, half the time people don't even cap all the necessary points along the way. I'd legit rather not have AV at all than what it's become, because at least it'll fill out the other battlegrounds which is sorely needed.

How are you ever going to find meaningful world pvp as in raids vs raids, when everyone who goes there will be in 3000 diffrent shards...
And the so called hotspots they've planned, will surely be a cluster F with the sharding.
Lastly i hope they don't hit AV to hard, it's my favorite bg WHEN it works. I dislike the rushing meta, so imo i'd rather they implement old AV. Or try to fix the rushing meta with a fix here and there so people will actually do objectives and pvp in it and not just rush skip.
Edit: To expand on the world pvp bit. Can't wait to see clips on youtube where fun battles takes place say 120vs120, meanwhile the rest of the server will never even know it happened due their shards. Since the chat is sharded aswell. Can't realy say "Oh hi massive battle outside IF right now come join!"
2
u/CrzyJek 5h ago
Yea I don't understand why they don't bother fixing AV and making it like original. Just make it so every bunker needs to have the general slayed inside the bunker and the bunker capped. Every general left alive gives the last boss 100% more HP and 100% more damage. Basically forces you to take all of them out and cap it. And make each general something that will require 20 people to kill minimum so you can't just rush it down with a small group for each.
Doing that slows down the game and gives the other team a chance at delaying the win for the opposition with even a handful of players. Force people to do the AV quests to reinforcements.
It's like they just gave up on AV 20 years ago.

So extremely disappointed about the lack of RP-PVP support from Blizzard. "Grobbulus was an outlier", my brothers, the Forever beta has had record-breaking Twitch viewership; literally not even the full release yet. Forever launch IS going to be an outlier; give the people what they want and give us RP-PVP. Make it so the faction lock from original PVP rulesets persist. If you have Alliance characters on PVP, you can only roll Alliance on RP-PVP!
Gosh, this is so tilting, I was really looking forward to another Zandalar Tribe experience from 2019.

We finally get a pvp focused podcast from blizzard and we get a guy who’s only there because he bought his way in by hosting a tournament instead of someone who actually plays the game
5
u/BarrettRTS 1d ago
For as much as there are reasons to dislike the guy, he has a track record of hosting these tournaments and them getting viewership that is higher than official Blizzard PvP events. 6000 entrants is also massive for an online bracket event, so it's not like this is some tiny blip either.
Plenty of people who run events weren't notable players first. Esports is also full of people that have done some shit and most people wouldn't blink if they'd been asked to be on something like this. Them giving him a small spotlight and also showing they're willing to bring some things forward to cater to the more hardcore audience isn't super weird.
He mostly kept his mouth shut and pretty much just stuck to talking about tournament stuff.

Some notes after watching:
- Don't have ruleset choice regret. Be smart. No adjustments for level 60 camping low levels. "PVP happened on a PVP server"
- No RP PVP. Grobbulus was an outlier. RP PVP servers since Grob have flopped HARD. They don't want to split an already small RP playerbase even further.
- Incremental steps for fixing layering. Hopefully we can get enough of it in by launch. Will be worked on even after launch.
- Don't want to make PVP too competitive. Casual before obligation.
- Organic PVP objectives. World bosses in open world (non-instanced) in 2019 classic was really only content for 1-2 guilds.
- AV less lucrative for rank 14 grind. Increased gains in all other BGs.
- Premades will be put against other premades. Wargames will also exist (maybe not on launch)
Intentionally balancing around the dueling tournament is not a thing
DUEL AREA. A GM island-type thing. Will have NPC unique for the PVP event for summoning people and maybe a cooldown reset npc if they want.
They don't want to take away from outside city dueling. But maybe like once a month they have a duel arena event (similar to Dark Moon Faire) in other areas of the world.

This is the only episode I have felt was bad. I have loved the episodes so far but man the guests and content of this one were a miss for me.
They barely talk about the affect on WPVP from layering. If I am getting camped and I switch over to my main will I even be able to find the guy camping me? Can I even be camped if I just join a group and get moved to a different layer as the camper? Usually when I am being camped and I ask for help I join a group so they know my location. Won't that just layer me away from the camper? How will world pvp events like PL towers work with multiple layers?
Idc about the duel tournament and dislike the streamer community. Tipsout only purpose on the show seemed to be to promote his duel tourny.
They didn't really talk about the ranking system much, I know there was a post but they didn't even mention that.
The rp-pvp is disappointing but I also agree that if they add it it will be diluted the rp community and many people who don't wanna rp were planning on going to rp-pvp to avoid streamers from what I have read which isn't good for rp server.
I know it is beta and not ready and brought forward early but that duel arena looks like ass lol.
The entire episode felt like 1 streamer just asking about their specific wish list.

u/dankinitdown420 1d ago
Savix questions are so cringe
“Umm have you guys thought of adding a treasure chest for PvP” cmon bro
13
u/Vlisa 1d ago
Strongly disagree with the idea of WPvP should spring from resource disputes. In my experience, once you have financially incentivized players it eventually leads to an endgame of things like Devilsaur Leather mafia.
If anyone has had experiences in other games where this resource competition did create good WPvP I'd be interested to hear it.
3
u/Sryzon 1d ago
Many MMOs have tried to encourage emergent WPvP through resource competition and it's always been lame in my experience.
I like the way New World did it: repeatable quests in contested zones that force you to flag for PVP and are designed so that you naturally run into the opposing faction. The quests reward PVP currency.
→ More replies (1)4
u/punt_the_dog_0 1d ago
devilsaur mafia is kind of an outlier though, no? was really only a thing because of the massive profitability and the fact that they are all grouped up in one relatively small area. having organic combat over things like random mining nodes is really fun. and it's cool, like survival of the fittest, if i can beat you, that node is mine buddy
→ More replies (14)2
u/_SleeZy_ 1d ago
Agree with this, there should be spontanious pvp. If people are "forced" into hotspots it just turns sour real quick. And the sharding situation isn't realy helping that either.
The most fun encounters are the random ones when you barely expect it, even better if you come out winning from said encounter. They're memorable.

6
7
u/Fearless_Baseball121 1d ago
Can you explain the negative part of this? I dont care about neither streamers or the tournament, but beta realms close in 7 days, whats the issue here? Is it bad that Blizzard is supporting a community event and having some fun with the players? We also have no clue how many resources this took. This might have been a devs passion weekend project for all we know. It also doesnt matter, its not up to us.
3
u/boomkinenjoyer 1d ago
This is reddit. Streamers are bad and we need to add monster truck mounts into the game and more retail assets.
2
2
u/tinyElliss 23h ago
Theres 6000 participants and theres gonna be 20 fold more eyes on that tournament via streams.

Why are we wasting time answering questions about this tournament, why is dev time being wasted to assist this tournament? Why does there need to be a "1v1 duel area" just because Savix asked for it?
I don't care about your personalities, I don't care that you want to be friends with these streamers, these should be blog posts tbh.

I don’t know anything about these streamers but it seems like a perfectly sensible use of dev time to engage with the community on community events. A lot of people watch streamers, even if I don’t.

Blizzard giving an alt right drifter like tipsout a platform and power is hilarious
What a clown world

Sharding, spell coefficients, gear progression, dungeons are a mess...and they're spending time building streamers an arena for the tournament, with NPCs with cooldown reduction timers.
You can also tell they were furious when asked about layering and sharding.

An outhouse. It symbolizes how much they care about pvp server communities and world pvp.

I agree they shouldn’t split the already small RP community. Honestly though, why isn’t it already just an RP-PvP server? There should t even be a PvE version of RP. If you’re actually pretending and getting into the RP mindset, it doesn’t make any sense that PvP would be “turned off” in the open world. Tis a silly thing.

There is a very serious concern that if there is only one PvP server, and its faction locked, then they introduce another PvP server, that PvP server will just become the Alt PvP server for the opposite faction. In order for a RP-PvP to actually survive, there would need to be two normal PvP servers, or the faction lock would need to be removed. Otherwise it is very very likely just going to be PvP first and completely dilute the RP aspect. Then you split the RP community across two servers, many will want to play RP-PvP but they will be a minority on their own server compared to just PvPers, and then the PvE RP server is just too small to be viable. It definitely would be a bad situation for RPers.

wait until rpers find out nobody from rp pvp is gonna roll on a pve server

just make it so you're faction locked on both PvP servers the same way.

Also, in other versions of classic, RP-PVP was more popular than normal RP

Yea if the rp server was default pvp, i would go there purely due i want a smaller server, so that there might be a semblance of a community forming there. The pvp events tend to be more fun aswell.

Because RP-PvP servers draw in people who love to do just one thing: grief RP events by ganking others constantly. It sucks ass. On a normal server, you can enable PvP and make PvP part of your RP when you want to.

Disaster that they endorsed low level town camping as just a fact of life. The idea that the solution to a dedicated band of griefers is to get a band of plucky allies to come kill then is laughable. Everyone knows that plucky group gets stack wiped on impact and immediately disbands.
It’s such a bad response it’s shocking they’ve gleaned any information at all from their pvp servers at all over the years

In the first ~10 minutes they use the example of finding out PVP isn't for you, so you can't transfer to PVE, because they're concerned about keeping factions balanced.
Why does it really matter for moving PVP->PVE? I could see PVE->PVP not being allowed, but the other way around doesn't really require faction balancing.

This game isn't for retail players. It's not for classic Andy's either.
It's for streamers. GG blizzard you got me, enjoy that $30.

Do they talk about layering at all? And specifics, not that they are magically going to fix it on launch for world PVP...

Hes always been a grifter putting out content to farm revenue instead of actually focusing on quality or content. When classic lost popularity he switched to low quality right wing content that said virtually nothing. He really should just switch to ai bot content instead.

His family business scammed people (has nothing to do with wow), he would make videos based on projected ad revenue (like most content creators) and isnt quite as knowledgeable about classic as hed like people to believe. Whether those things make hating him justifiable is up to you.
