UPDATE - Indoor Ponderosa Lemon Tree

Hello All!

Thank you so much for all your previous advice for my lemon tree, Pondy! I wanted to post an update since I'm so proud of it. It really thrived outside and I now have one lemon growing. Pondy survived mealybugs with isolation, weekly isopropyl alcohol sprays, diligent leaf checks, pot wiping and soil wash for almost two months. (I also think I got lucky and caught it early, took away the mother and destroyed the two nests.)

I've brought it back inside for the winter and have a grow light set up. It's been indoors for almost a month and had minor leaf drop, but has otherwise acclimated. I have a couple flower buds as well.

As always, advice always appreciated <3

Hopefully this is enough lighting for my finger lime, Australian blood lime, and variegated calamondin kumquat. Might bring in my sudachi soon.

Hi, wondering if anyone could give us some pointers. We are located in Austin and have had this citrus tree for 5,6 months from Costco. Started to notice yellowing in the leafs the past month. I've put in citrus fertilizer about 2 weeks ago and no changes. Hoping to find someone that could point me in the right direction and fix whatever defiences that this improved Meyer lemon is having. Thank you in advance.

1 Year and after summer care?

So I just got my first lemon tree in November of last year. I've included a picture of then and now. I have also included pictures of some of the leaves that I am concerned about. I'm not sure if this is something I should be concerned about or if this is just a result of its first time out in the sun for the entire summer. She did also survive a tornado so that could also have something to do with the leaves but I did already notice some color change before the tornado. If anybody has any advice or thoughts on anything I would really appreciate the help. Thank you very much.

Well, she got moved inside today to overwinter in our basement. It stays about 70 degrees down there with 50% relative humidity. This is the first year I’ve used this setup (clothes rack and Vipar XS 1500 Pro). I’m curious to see what will happen to all this immature fruit in the coming months.

Health & Troubleshooting Black Spots on Key Lime Leaves

Hello all,

My Key lime has been growing well, and even has started pushing out its very first branches, but I've noticed within the last few days that all of its new leaves are developing these black spots. A few of the older ones have brown spots, but I'm not sure if they're related. Is this a fungal infection? Insects? Something I should worry about?

Health & Troubleshooting What are these bugs on my lemon tree?

Young lemon tree has about a half-dozen black ant-like bugs crawling on the stems and leaves. They might just be ants but neem oil doesn't appear to deter them. Are they harmful to the tree? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Health & Troubleshooting Citrus Seedlings

Hello all,

My key lime and one of my lemons have begun pushing out their first branches! And the other lemon has exploded in growth and has a number of thorns.

A few quick concerns, though. A couple.of the leaves on my Key lime have developed a few black specks, which I believe are a minor fungal infection. They aren't sooty mold as they don't wipe off. I did give it some ferti-lome as suggested in a previous post, and its iron defficiency seems to be getting better and the leaves are getting their color back. Some of its bark has turned silvery with a greenish hue, though, which I believe could either be sunburn or just lignification.

The lemons' leaves have a number of white specks on them, and each has a small black patch on their stem. Other than that, though, again, they seem mostly happy.

I'm about to transition them indoors for the winter, and have moved them from the south side of my house to the east side and now to the north side on my porch, and in the next few days I'll start bringing them in at night and setting them back out in the day, and eventually I'll put them in the large south facing window I have until I can replace my growlight. Is that a good method for transitioning them without any leaf drop, or should I touch up on my method?

Note: Yes I do have them in yoplait containers. I made sure to fill them with more holes than were probably necessary.

Health & Troubleshooting Help! Palastinian lime in distress

So I'm in zone 8b/9a and this plant was propped on trifolata rootstock in early 2024. Treated with neonic 2/25. It suffered a fire ant scale farming issue this last summer but has been successfully abated. It was looking a little rough a couple of months ago when actively infested. I treated it with spinosad and insecticidal soap. Since then I've been feeding it microlife acidifier, liquid seaweed, and bio matrix every other week or so. It's looking worse and worse. Help! First pic is the lime, second is other citrus, third isal a friend I found in the bottom of the lime pot.

Health & Troubleshooting When to move indoors?

Hi, I have a lime and lemon tree in containers and it's going to get down to the 40s°F at night this weekend. I've never grown citrus trees before and was wondering if it was time to bring them into the house. I'm in zone 8B in Central Texas.

Edited for a wording mistake.

Help diagnose Meyer lemon tree

I’m in southern Louisiana, the ground under my lawn is pretty solid clay so when I planted these trees I dug about a 4x4x4 ft hole to plant them, I used a mixture of native soil, perlite, compost and citrus garden soil, also slightly raised so I don’t think the roots are water logged. Any ideas why my leaves are yellowing and also any ideas what kind of pest is making these irregular looking bites on the edges of the leaves?

Is this a natural occurrence and I should just mark these as random abnormalities or is there some way to guard against losing a few of my crop every growth cycle?

Health & Troubleshooting Key Lime Seedling Bark

Thumbnail

Hello all,

Forgot to include this in a previous post. My key lime has been developing bark just fine, but a region of its stem has darkened, almost like it's damp. The spot isn't squishy at all (still quite firm), and there's no noticeable odor, so I pray it isn't rot. It's also just started putting out its first three branches, so it seems to be happy.

Health & Troubleshooting Meyer lemon tree progressively yellowing after shipping + repotting. What am I doing wrong?

Hi everyone! Total citrus/plant noob here hoping for some advice. I’ve read through a few recent posts from people dealing with similar issues / just general "getting going" advice and watched numerous videos on YouTube, but figured I’d share exactly what I’m seeing and get a fresh perspective before I start changing anything else.

I’m in the Boston, MA area and have a roughly 3–4 ft Meyer lemon tree indoors in my apartment. It’s next to a south-facing window with good natural light, although we’re obviously heading into fall/winter in New England and daylight is dropping. I’m planning to get a grow light soon to supplement the window light through the winter.

Quick timeline:

  • Mid-September: Ordered the tree from Trees.com. It arrived boxed in a small nursery pot. Leaves were mostly green, but there was already some pale/mottled coloring.
  • Sept. 26: Repotted into a larger 12–14” container using Miracle-Gro Cactus (I also have a bag of unopened Palm & Citrus Potting Mix). Kept the original root ball intact and added fresh mix underneath and around it. Pot has one drainage hole and a saucer.
  • Watering: Watered thoroughly after repotting, then didn’t water again until Oct. 11 because the soil stayed moist for a surprisingly long time. Both times water drained through the bottom. I’ve been checking a few inches down rather than watering on a schedule.
  • Since repotting: Lower leaves have progressively turned yellow, and it seems like the yellowing is slowly moving upward. Some leaves have a mottled green/yellow appearance. The upper part of the tree is still greener. The original root ball also seems to dry somewhat faster than the surrounding new soil. It was also moving slightly within the new mix, so I recently added/firmed some soil around the sides to stabilize it.

I haven’t added any fertilizer because the new Miracle-Gro mix already contains fertilizer.

Would love any thoughts on what I’m seeing. Does this look like normal shipping/repotting stress, a watering/root issue, nutrient deficiency, not enough light, or something else? And given that the original root ball seems to dry faster than the surrounding mix, should I focus more of the watering around that original root zone while it establishes?

Trying not to overreact and make things worse, so any advice from people who actually know citrus would be appreciated!
