Question Regarding Car Boots in Chapel Hill

Hey guys,

Yesterday I parked in a lot by The Gathering Place. I was in a rush, thought I was in the appropriate parking lot for the gathering place, and didn’t see the signs saying it was a private lot.

Stupid of me, I know.

I come back out to my car 20 minutes later and there’s a boot on my car, and as I’m inspecting it a truck pulls behind my car and blocks it in (I already can’t go anywhere) and a guy rolls down his window and starts yelling at me and demanding I give him $240 dollars within 30 minutes or he’s calling a tow truck to take my car away.

I realize I made a mistake and I ask him if his company takes card and he starts insulting me and telling me to “walk my ass to the atm”

I go to the ATM, and I only had $200 in my bank account so I asked him if he’d accept that amount since I was only there for about $20 minutes and it was quite literally all I had left. I apologized again for parking there. He started cussing me out and telling me “you better call someone” and hurling insults while I called a friend for some help.

I eventually get the money, and the whole time he’s taking the boot off he’s just talking shit and grumbling. I ask him what company he works for and he refuses to tell me, and I ask him for a receipt and he refuses.

Is it legal for them to refuse to give me a receipt or refuse to tell me the name of their business? Is there a cap on how much a private lot can charge for boot removal? Is there anything I can even do in this situation?

I realize I fucked up by parking in a private lot, but the way this guy was acting was insane and extremely sketchy. The way he refused to give a receipt or tell me what company he works for was a huge red flag, but I’ve never been in this position before and I’m not sure what to do.

Also, I just want to add that Alpha Pie/The Gathering Place had NOTHING to do with this. They are a great business with extremely nice people who sympathized with me after all this.

OK....who's got it? Who has the real recipe for Skylight Exchange's African Tuna Melt? I know one of you do, and you've been keeping it secret. Time to let it out. I need a trip down memory lane.

Other than big box stores, recommendations for local dealers? I'm not interested in bells and whistles, just a basic budget frig -- whirlpool or GE top freezer. thanks.

Hello lovely members of r/chapelhill. Im graduating this December and have been on the lookout for a good photographer. Any suggestions are welcome, budget friendly suggestions are extremely welcome! I work at a local business nearby and I believe the owner came in today wearing one of their uniforms and I asked when they would be open and he said and I quote: "We will be open tomorrow, come stop by and try it out." to which I replied that I would because I live and work close by.

Pumpkin Patch - Binkley Church

If you’re looking for a place to get pumpkins, I highly suggest Binkley Baptist Church. They’ve got some really nice pumpkins and all the proceeds from the sales go to the Interfaith Council, IFC, who helps settle homeless folks into apartments.
They’re open 10-6 every day!

Memories of growing up in Chapel Hill (60s) and returning to UNC (late 70s)

I was born in 1959 and raised in Chapel Hill during the '60s. I have incredible memories of the town, our neighborhood on Rosemary Street, the people, and the university where my father was a professor of English Literature.

To my young mind, it seemed like a wildly creative and artistic time. The arts were embraced, stunning mid-century homes were popping up (my uncle was an architect in Raleigh), and the town was alive with energy. My mother would help out on local puppet shows like The Jabberwocky (my fav). My brother and I would meet up with friends and wander the area exploring or digging under the Kenan Stadium fence to catch a football game. We always made sure to be home before dinner though!

We had a large family where the unstated motto was "the more the merrier", so we grew up meeting a kaleidoscope of interesting and provocative house guests. On Sundays, we attended Mass mostly without complaint, because the next stop was always the Franklin Street Dairy Bar for donuts - heaven!

It wasn't totally idyllic, as this was also the turbulent 1960s. My mother made us acutely aware of racial inequality, encouraging us to protest downtown for civil rights and against the war.

I eventually returned as a freshman at UNC in '79 and loved the town all over again. Shout out to all the folks from that era who share memories of that special time! Anyone else remember any old Franklin St stores or the to-die-for Dairy Bar donuts?
