1630 World Map by Hendrik Hondius II

The seven spheres moving through the twelve signs of the zodiac are why timeless books like the Bible are full of sevens and twelves. It’s also why myths and fairytales feature these particular numbers.

To name a few, think of Hercules and his twelve labors, or King Arthur and his twelve knights/victories, or Odysseus shooting an arrow through twelve axe heads, or Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, or the Seven Kingdoms in Tolkien’s Game of Thrones.

Apps to make maps

Hi. As title says, I am looking for guidance on what tools are there to make maps. I currently mostly use photoshop with brushes but it has limitations. So I would appreciate if you could help me find other tools I could use it would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for ability to both create modern looking maps and fantasy looking maps. As both types require different things I will ask separately for upgrades I am looking for:

A) Modern looking maps:

By modern looking I mean minimalistic maps defined with polygons and polylines. I am interested in maps where I define mostly only canvas size, polygons/polylines, their fill (it would be nice if fill could be not only color but also patterns that have adjustable spacing, detail, transition mode, etc.) and border. It would also be nice if there was a way to add zoom that defines detail (more likely a zoom out simplification that simplifies polygons by hiding points that are too close to their neighboring points.), a way to make map viewable online for anyone, a way to add waypoints with customizable icon and description similar to google maps waypoints.

B) Fantasy maps

By Fantasy maps I refer to maps that have much less depth (waypoints and zoom features of madern maps) and more like a static image. Not just medieval fantasy maps as I would like more features. I am looking for maps where you draw the map but tools allow you to add details. Such as creating shore lines, applying textures, adding pre made sprites, etc. Like you can draw basic map and add texturization and details through existing objects. I am not looking for simple ai "beatifier" but for something that has ability to apply texture with customisablility similar to blender nodes or alike. And has a basic pool of textures/sprites and atleast some community that makes their own.

IT IS IMPORTANT

to know that I understand that I defined something that unlikely to exist. While I want to have an app that can do all what I mentioned I understand that it is unwise to expect it. So I am asking what apps you know that can make at least something of what I list. So for example I know that I can make maps that can satisfy part of request in (A) through creating kml file and utilizing my google maps. Or I can make parts of what is requested in (B) through Inkarnate. As I believe you might've stumbled upon similar questions before and found your tools, I ask on what you have decided to use?

I made a phone app that turns any place into a map poster, because I wanted a print of the neighborhood I grew up in

Solo dev here. A while ago I wanted a simple poster of the part of Jakarta where I grew up, just the streets, a name and the coordinates. Every option I found was either a website that charges per print or a template that looked like everyone else's. So I ended up building my own, and it slowly turned into CARTA.

You search for a place, pick a style (there's minimal, vintage, blueprint, dark, and a bunch more), then tweak road colors, line widths, frames and text. You can also drop in a GPX file and turn a run or a ride into route art, add terrain contours where elevation data exists, and export a print-ready PDF at 300 DPI. Map data comes from OpenStreetMap, and the attribution is kept on every export.

The hardest part has been density. A neighborhood like mine has hundreds of tiny alleys, and if you draw every road at the same weight the poster just turns into gray noise. Deciding which road types show up at which scale, and how thick each one should be, has taken way more of my time than the actual app UI.

It's free on Android. It does have ads, and the biggest export sizes need a rewarded ad.

Honest question for people who care about maps: when you see these minimal city posters, what makes one look good to you and what makes it look cheap? I'm trying to figure out which defaults to change next.

Different kind of request and not sure where to go

Ok so I have an idea of what I want to get my girlfriend for Christmas. Its going to be an outline of the state we live in with roads connecting the towns we've lived in with them convening at our current home. Right now what I want to do is create a clean image of what I want so I can present it to a wood worker to make the final product. I have both of the images on Google maps pulled up, but I would like some help overlaying them into one image and getting rid of the all of the other background junk. Just a simple outline with two "roads" on it. Yes I know I can use AI but I REALLY don't want to have to use that.

Is there a tool that can help me with this or do I reach out to a local artist to have them just draw it up? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Just a note: I'm not asking anyone here for a commission, just looking for a tool to help me with my request

Ghost town mapping

Hi! I’m in the research phase of writing a book about a ghost town in eastern California. As part of it, I want to create accurate maps of the town and its mines.

For the mines, I have been using the USGS MRDS database, which is unfortunately inaccurate in the area, so next time I’m there, I’ll be getting GPS coordinates on all the mine features. This is within my capabilities to do.

What’s a bit beyond my capabilities is the town itself. I plan on finding foundations and comparing those to historical photos (of which there are few.) There are very few structures left. I got the USGS lidar data, but filtering out the vegetation in the area is difficult because it’s largely sagebrush, and I am a complete novice at this.

Can anyone suggest methods for finding the locations of historical buildings (town was active until 1915ish) either using publicly available data or other methods? It would be an absolute amazing help in getting my book up to the quality I want.

Ancythra - The Ever-Expanding Pocket Dimension - (Campaign Setting) (No AI)

Ancythra - The Ever-Expanding Pocket Dimension

I created the original Ancythra map in 2021, and decided recently it needed a “glow up” (pun intended!). So, I went about remastering it over the past couple of weeks, putting roughly another 10 hours of work into it.

The dimensions of the original map were 1200x1600, which is pretty small compared to what I usually make now. But, if I were to upscale it, that would require re-doing many parts of it from scratch. Plus, some of the methods I used back then don’t upscale very nicely anyway, such as the way I used to do the mountains in Photoshop.

So rather than re-do it all, I decided to lean a little more into a sort of “pixel art map” style.

What does that mean exactly? Once I was finished remastering the map, I exported and rendered it at 400% with no re-sampling (what Photoshop does when re-sizing an image). This made each 1x1 pixel become a 4x4 pixel block. Now the map's dimensions are 4800x6400, technically speaking. This gives it a sort of retro, pixel-art type look when fully zoomed in.

As always, no AI was used.

Lore:

Lore-wise, Ancythra began as a regular Pocket Dimension, which is another dimension that is usually rather small and self-contained.

But this particular dimension has somehow grown over time, just as our real-life universe does. Constantly expanding outward. More, and more, sometimes absorbing other pocket dimensions into itself. This has resulted in some odd acquisitions, strange fusions, and plenty of magical weirdness that has taken root in this ever-expanding dimension.

Over time, Ancythra has expanded and mutated. It has grown to the size of a small continent, floating and rotating in the Astral Plane of existence. Pieces often break off as it grows, but the rate of growth still exceeds the rate of loss.

It also has portals to other Planes as well, making Ancythra something of a "cross-roads" between other worlds and dimensions. Not unlike the City of Sigil in the Forgotten Realms, probably known best from Planescape: Torment.

This map would fit well into most existing DnD and tabletop RPG campaigns, as it’s a separate location from the main worlds you are already playing in. A small world that can be added in as a new place to visit, almost like an “expansion pack” for your ongoing game (Shivering Isles, anyone?). At least, that’s how I like to think of it :)

There are additional versions available here, as well as an editable Photoshop file to swap out the text however you like, and a few other toggle-able layers. More details in the link: https://www.patreon.com/stoneward13/posts/ancythra-ever-171702141

I hope you like the map, and have a good weekend! :)

Two experimental map generators: settlement layouts and terrain from planetary to local scale

I'm more on the procedural generation side but I do it for maps so I post also here :)

I've been reviving two personal procedural mapping projects and reworking them in Rust with AI coding tools. I wanted to share some actual application captures and get feedback on their cartographic presentation.

Magna Urbis generates pre-modern settlements and their surrounding landscapes. It explores organic street patterns, medina-inspired layouts, and planned cities, with different map styles. Its starting point was a Python port of Watabou's TownGeneratorOS. The images show the TypeScript prototype, which has a free browser demo and SVG/PNG exports. A Rust/WASM engine with GPU acceleration for selected stages is under development and will also get an online build.

Neural Earth combines World Orogen's planetary geography with InfiniteDiffusion / Terrain Diffusion's learned terrain refinement. It includes relief, seasonal climate, biomes, soils, and other geographic layers. The model generates elevation data rather than a finished map image; shading and cartographic layers are rendered separately.

It runs locally for now because neural inference needs a GPU backend. An inference port is planned to investigate browser use through WASM and GPU acceleration. No browser-only inference demo is available yet.

The screenshots are prototype outputs, and the climate and terrain aim for plausible fictional geography. I'm still working on both projects, and their eventual integration is my main goal.

I'd appreciate feedback on readability: relief shading, visual hierarchy between roads and buildings, and whether the geographic layers communicate useful information. Specific examples of confusing or implausible features are especially helpful.

GitHub Issues and PRs are welcome. For generation problems, please include the seed, settings, and a screenshot if possible.
