Carleton Place residents could pay approximately $20.48 more annually for water and sewer services in 2027 under a proposed 1.95% rate increase.

Committee of the Whole supported the proposal on Oct. 13. The increase follows a 10-year financial plan designed to maintain services and build reserves for future infrastructure replacement.

The proposed bylaw also includes relief for qualifying unusually high metered water bills and extends the swimming pool surcharge to hot tubs.

The detailed 2027 budget will be presented to the new council following the municipal election. Final approval has not yet been reported.

Carleton Place's mayor and deputy mayor have been acclaimed, but voters still have a choice to make when it comes to town council.

With 11 candidates vying for five council seats in the Oct. 26 municipal election, how do you decide who gets your vote?

To help residents get to know the candidates and where they stand on local issues, Lanarkist sent the same five questions to everyone running for council.

We've rounded up their responses in one place, along with available campaign and contact information, to help you make an informed decision before heading to the polls.

Eleven candidates are seeking five council seats in Carleton Place, with five incumbents running for re-election and six newcomers in the race.

About 100 people attended an Oct. 1 all-candidates meeting organized by the Carleton Place Chamber of Commerce and moderated by Brian Turner of MyFM. Candidates answered resident-submitted questions on growth, infrastructure and other community issues.

Residents who spoke with Hometown News reflected on the experience of the incumbents and the ideas presented by newcomers, with one attendee saying the forum helped him decide how he will vote.

The mayor and deputy mayor have already been acclaimed.

Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Kellylee Evans will headline the fourth annual Notes for Nature benefit concert at Zion-Memorial United Church in Carleton Place on Oct. 17.

The Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust event will also feature an opening ensemble and silent auction. Proceeds will support MMLT’s stewardship, education and conservation work.

The Four Directions Stones have arrived at Riverside Park in Carleton Place, marking the second phase of the Mizi Zibi Mamidosewin project.

The installation will be dedicated Sept. 30 during a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ceremony beginning at 11 a.m.

Carleton Place will become the first community in North America to host the Rushnyk of Unity – Rushnyk of Victory on Sunday, Sept. 13, during UA FEST at Riverside Park.

The 160.5-metre embroidered work includes more than 100 panels created by Ukrainian communities across 13 European countries. A Lanark County panel created locally throughout the summer will be sewn onto the rushnyk during the festival.

UA FEST runs from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

A panel discussion at the Carleton Place Arena examined circumstances that can contribute to homelessness and the challenges people may face accessing housing, mental health care, addiction treatment and other supports.

The discussion also addressed waiting lists, limited treatment capacity, affordable housing shortages and limits on when adults can be compelled into treatment or housing.

Carleton Place is forecasting a year-end finish within budget after the first seven months of 2026, with several capital projects coming in under budget and reducing tax-supported costs by nearly $1 million.

Proposed water and sewer servicing on Allan Street has been deferred for consideration during budget deliberations and by the next council. The project had been scheduled for 2028, so the deferral is not expected to affect its timeline.

Committee members also supported changes that would keep municipal staff out of disputes between neighbours involving trees, hedges and other vegetation crossing private-property lines. The proposed bylaw amendment will return to council for approval.

A plan to replace an existing rental property at 254 Lake Avenue West with 20 new homes is moving forward after Carleton Place’s committee of the whole supported draft conditions for the subdivision and condominium.

Councillors raised concerns about parking near Riverside Park, stormwater drainage and construction timing. The development would include two single-detached homes, one semi-detached home and four fourplexes across seven residential parcels.

The application now goes to Lanark County for final consideration.

Hi, I'm repairing a house in Carleton Place and looking for a HVAC company. The previous owner probably rented their furnace which got wet due to a plumbing leak and was removed and not replaced. They then installed baseboard heaters through out. I'm looking to get the forced air system back in operation to protect the plumbing and help dry the house out.

Has anyone had a good experience or can recommend an HVAC company in the area? I'm open to the type of system installed, gas, heat pump, etc. The system ideally needs to be installed horizontally under the floor joists. Any recommendations appreciated.

Carleton Place committee members have chosen not to endorse CMHC’s standardized Housing Design Catalogue, which includes accessory dwelling units, fourplexes, a sixplex and townhouses.

Councillors raised concerns about protecting the town’s architectural character and existing design standards. The catalogue remains publicly available, and property owners can still bring the designs forward for municipal review.

Fire prevention, a parking safety concern and a piece of Carleton Place’s railway history were all part of the latest Committee of the Whole discussions.

The fire department reported 369 inspections and 123 orders in its second-quarter report. The department also took part in several public education events and is operating with a full complement of paid volunteer firefighters.

On Stonewater Bay, staff are proposing a no-parking zone along a curve where parked vehicles and roadside vegetation make it difficult for drivers to see oncoming traffic.

At Carleton Junction, staff recommend keeping the “Team Track,” a short section of railway running beside the Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail, and incorporating it into the site rather than having it removed.
