Hello! I just finished S2 of PJATO since it’s out on Netflix. I think this season is leaps and bounds ahead of S1, and I would like to gush a little bit.
The writing is so much better. One of my biggest gripes about S1 is that characters like Grover and Annabeth and Chiron spoke in what I can only describe as exposition speak, where they tell things to the audience like walking encyclopaedias. S2 fixes this, where characters now sound like characters, and the exposition comes occasionally, but it’s nowhere near as condescending as before. In addition, I think the dialogue improved a lot. Characters sound more natural and while some scenes are still campy it doesn’t feel too out of place. I liked spending time with Percy and Tyson and Annebeth and Clarisse this season I think they were all really engaging and I was invested a lot in their stories. Standout of S2 is Luke for me. His actor is really great at bringing out that Luke energy I remember from the books, and I like that he feels much more layered in this show.
Production was insane. Beautiful physical sets, stunning on-location photography, and incredible prosthetics and CGI for the laistrygonians and Polyphemus. And I think they did a great job with Tyson’s eye - it never distracted me and it felt very real. Also it’s nice to be able to see the characters at night time. Circe’s resort stands out for production design, as well as scenes on Luke’s ship. Scene with the sirens was haunting and spooky in a great way. Actually the whole episode with Circe was fantastic and having Percy realise his fatal flaw and question his own allegiance was really nice.
Fights were a big step up from previous season. Stakes felt more real, choreography was there, editing was less choppy and flowed better.
I liked that they made Polyphemus smarter, cool change for the character and made sense given what know about Cyclops in this show. Not a fan of how he exited the series after tumbling off the cliff, but I imagine he must’ve been expensive.
Final battle at camp was pretty epic ngl. I liked seeing the campers fight against the turned demigods. Was pretty brutal seeing what looked like little kids 12-13yos getting cut down by Luke and his goons.
Love seeing Sally so having her pick up the kids at the end of their quest.
Clarisse’s relationship with her undead crew being fleshed out was actually quite good, showed her concern for comrades whether they are alive or dead, and also illustrates her leadership qualities well.
Overall the season was a banger and if they keep up this quality for TTC and beyond I will be so sat.
