Bupropion Contraindication Guide

Overview on Bupropion

  • Bupropion is an NDRI that increases dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.
  • It's prescribed for smoking cessation, depressive disorders like MDD and SAD, and sometimes ADHD.

Common Side Effects

  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Diaphoresis (increased sweating)
  • Insomnia
  • Weight loss and decreased appetitie
  • Increased blood pressure and heart rate
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches

Abrupt cessation of the medication can lead to withdrawal symptoms including:

  • Flu-like symptoms such as severe fatigue, muscle aches, and excessive sweating
  • Neurological and sleep effects such as dizziness, trouble sleeping, headaches, anxiety, agitation, brain zaps, and increased seizure risk
  • Gastrointestinal distress symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Cardiovascular symptoms such as heart palpitations, irregular heartbeat, and blood pressure fluctuations (sudden drops or spikes)
  • Rebound depression or anxiety

Absolute vs. Non-absolute (Relative) Contraindications

Absolute contraindications (WHAT SHOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT BE MIXED) include:

  • MAOIs due to hypertensive crisis risk
  • Allergic to ingredients in bupropion
  • Eating disorders due to seizure risk
  • Seizures and epilepsy due to dose-dependent seizure risk

Non-absolute or relative contraindications (RISK VS. BENEFIT) include:

  • Cardiovascular issues like long QT syndrome, heart failure, tachycardia, and other arrhythmias: Bupropion can trigger or worsen preexisting tachycardia and should be clinically monitored if uncontrolled hypertension (>160/100), and history of heart attacks are present
  • Factors that elevate seizure risk like stroke or traumatic brain injury
  • Bipolar disorder and other psychiatric comorbidities due to manic episode or psychosis risk
  • Mixing Bupropion with other medications that lower the seizure threshold like tricyclic antidepressants
  • Metabolized by liver, which should be monitored by a doctor in the case of liver or kidney disease

Other Drug Interactions

  • Antiarrhythmic drugs, including beta blockers
  • Other meds that can induce a seizure or lower threshold like corticosteroids or tricyclic antidepressants
  • Substances that cause CNS (central nervous system) depression such as alcohol and other sedatives leading to an overdose (including some antihistamines)
  • Dopaminergic drugs that increase dopamine
  • Pain meds, especially tramadol, which functions as an SNRI
  • MAOI inhibitors
  • Sympathomimetic substances (to keep it legal, includes phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine, which are commonly found in decongestants) due to risk of a hypertensive crisis
  • ADHD stimulants like Adderall, which can increase risk of hypertensive crisis

Question Is it placebo?

I got prescribed Wellbutrin 150XL a week ago for depression(MDD) anxiety and adhd(not fully diagnosed) and I don’t know if it’s placebo or not but I’ve noticed an increase in energy like I don’t feel sleepy as much throughout the day. I took my meds today and some caffeine a few hours later to do my hw and I was in that wired feeling and able to complete my work. Is it the caffeine or the medication that’s making me doing this?
PS I haven’t touched caffeine when on Wellbutrin until today
Brand is granules pharma

Question UTI like symptoms? Please help.

Hi everyone,

I read about this in an older post but wondered if for anyone who experienced this it got better after some time? Also interested in XL vs SR since I read one comment that mentioned the symptoms of UTI going away on SR.

I'm on 150 XL (Neuraxpharm) for nearly two months now. I only had UTIs in my life on strong hormonal imblanaces and I've suddenly had two since taking Bupropion. It has been working well otherwise and I am about to raise to 300.

I am so scared this could happen more often since it's so heavily discomforting and stressful. Otherwise it worked well for me so far.

Also I am aware that regarding the side effects UTI isn't supposed to be one. But apparently it is or at least the feeling of it. Which sucks just as much.

Glad for every answer!

Other drugs Adding lexapro to help the Wellbutrin rage/irritability?

Curious to know if anyone has found that adding lexapro to their Wellbutrin has helped with the irritability/rage that can sometimes be caused by Well!

Years ago my doc tried to put me on Wellbutrin alone and I had to stop after three weeks because I was having insane rage and was so agitated.

Fast forward, I’ve been on lexapro for 2.5 years and have pooped out. Emotionless, no sex drive, weight gain.

This is making me wonder if it might be worth trying Wellbutrin again, this time with the Lexapro already in my system.

Other SSRIs have not helped- Prozac made me feel so anxious and wound up, and Zoloft absolutely destroyed my stomach for the month I was on it.

I’m feeling so discouraged about what to do. The Lexapro is killing my motivation and has me in a slump, so I’d love to hear peoples’ experiences taking both the Lex and Well.

Thank you!

Online prescription

Hi all,

I'm really struggling in college right now, and since I don't have health insurance, I can't afford to see a doctor. Is there an affordable place where I can get a prescription and then transfer it to Amazon Pharmacy? Thanks!

Question I know everyone responds differently, but how many of you have found that Wellbutrin helps with anxiety? I’d love to hear about your experiences.

Pill color?

So I’ve been taking 150 mg XL since February 2026 I really didn’t feel a major difference. I was getting so frustrated but I stuck to it hoping things will get better. I always had white pills. Recently I went to pick up my pills in September and they were pink, which means it’s a different manufacturer. I guess? It sounds crazy but with these pills I have felt such a difference. I feel so much better and I’m thinking is it possible that a difference in manufacturer can really make you feel different and work better? Anyone else?

Help Nervous about starting bupropion 150 mg for ADHD

Hi everyone!

I think I made the mistake of reading too many threads and personal experiences about bupropion, and now I’m pretty scared about starting it.

I’m starting bupropion 150 mg tomorrow for ADHD. I’ve been taking paroxetine 10 mg for about seven years because of severe physical anxiety symptoms and agoraphobia. Honestly, it helped me a lot and has kept my anxiety under control throughout this time.
However, we’ve decided to start gradually tapering off paroxetine because I’d like to try coming off it. I tried once before, but I had to go back on it because I tapered off too quickly.

On the other hand, my ADHD has reached a pretty difficult point. I’m struggling to do even basic everyday tasks, which is why my psychiatrist prescribed bupropion to help manage my symptoms.

The problem is that reading so many experiences online has made me worry about the potential side effects. I’m scared that my anxiety might come back, that I might feel more depressed or experience mood changes, that I might lose my hair (haha), that it could affect my athletic performance, or that I might experience some unexpected and unusual side effects.

I’m also worried about having to give up everyday things, like drinking coffee or occasionally having a few drinks and enjoying a little buzz without constantly worrying about it.

I’d really like to hear from people who’ve been in a similar situation, especially those with a history of anxiety who had been taking an SSRI like paroxetine for a long time before starting bupropion.

Has it helped with your ADHD symptoms? How was the adjustment during the first few weeks? Did you notice your anxiety getting worse, or did things work out well for you?

I know everyone reacts differently and that online forums tend to give more visibility to negative experiences, but I’d really appreciate some honest and realistic perspectives.

Thanks!

Sexual / Libido + Adderall XR 🥳 🎉

Hey guys! I am currently taking bupropion sr 200mg twice a day. Alongside 15-30mg of adderall XR (i need my doctor to triple the dose 15 is so weak i tried 30 twice its better but still not high enough🥲)

I'm not sure if my problem is that i simply need a higher dose of adderall or do I need something added? Bupropion makes me feel pretty good and the adderall although it's weak I do enjoy it. I have next to no anxiety with barely any side effects.

But I cant help but think that something is missing? I need more of a kicker to get me motivated or something 🤷‍♂️

NGL I'd like my libido to be a lil higher 🤪 its there but it aint THUR ya feel?

Whats yalls cocktail? Should I try vyvanse instead, i need more pep to my step, adderals kinda too 😎 chill

Question Help me pleaseeee

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if it eventually goes away.

Along with psychological therapy, I was prescribed bupropion (Wellbutrin) for depression related to binge eating disorder. I started at 150 mg XL and then my dose was increased to 300 mg XL.

My mood has improved, but my binge eating has actually gotten worse, and I feel like my appetite has increased.

I know it’s not a magic pill, but I thought it was supposed to help with this, which is why it was prescribed to me in the first place.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Did it get better over time?

Thanks! ❤️

Side effects Finally found what helps with the sweating and temperature fluctuations

Like many of you here, I have experienced the extreme sweating and temperature fluctuations since starting Wellbutrin. The usual order is hot flash -> suddenly sweating bucks -> "oh shit, now I'm covered in sweat" -> EXTREMELY cold and getting chills and goosebumps because now my skin and clothes are wet.

I am big on supplements, and I wanted to share the few things I've found that seem to really be working:

  1. L-theanine. I take about 400mg a day, usually a few hours after my WB dose when I know it's peaking in my system, OR at the same time I take my Adderall IR.
  2. Black cohosh. I take around 40mg a day. This is a trick I recently picked up from menopause forums. Menopausal women have been taking this for a long time to help with their hot flashes, so I figured I'd give it a try too to see if it works for Wellbutrin and after about 2 weeks my body temp really does feel more even throughout the day! (Note: there are warnings on this, as I guess in rare circumstances it can cause liver injury. But hey so can Tylenol, so I consider this a risk you just take when you put anything into your body. So far, I have had no issues.)
  3. The biggest one, and the one that I know a lot of people do NOT like to hear: NO CAFFEINE. I used to drink probably around 24oz of coffee a DAY, and could never understand why about an hour after my morning coffee I would be covered in sweat and having unbearable hot flashes and chills. When I finally put two and two together I made the painful decision to give up coffee and the difference is like night and day! I will drink an occasional black or green tea that has less caffeine than coffee and it will trigger the sweats and chills a little bit, but nowhere near as bad as coffee. So if you are looking to quit coffee, this might be a good thing to switch to!
  4. If you are taking a generic version of XL, the manufacturer can make a big difference. Lupin amplifies these symptoms to an unbearable degree for me. With Epic and Rising they are still kinda there, but at a level I can work with. I felt none of these side effects the one month I took Granules brand, which I had never heard of before.

So yea this is what works for me right now. If you made it this far PLEASE feel free to share any other tips or tricks that have helped you. Especially with the sweating!

Help 150xl to 300xl?

I can’t decide if I should move up or not. I’m on 40 mg of strattera as well. It’s been about 6 weeks being on both. I feel more focused but not necessarily motivated. I still crave adderall when I need motivation. I have anhedonia and I think it’s maybe slightly reduced at times? Like I feel a little more optimistic at certain moments and can enjoy little things but I’d say maybe a 10% increase. Which also seems to even out by making me more down at other moments.

Have I just not waited long enough or should I move up?

Question What’s the quickest way to get prescribed Wellbutrin? Are there any reputable telehealth services that offer same-day appointments and can send a prescription to a local pharmacy that day? I’d appreciate any recommendations!

Long story short, I used to take 7-OH, which is essentially a much more potent form of kratom. I decided to quit over a month ago, probably closer to two months at this point. Since quitting, I’ve been struggling quite a bit with my mental health, particularly anxiety and mild depression, both of which seem to be getting progressively worse.

Years ago, I was prescribed Zoloft for mild depression. While it definitely helped, I also felt emotionally numb, which is something I’d really like to avoid experiencing again.

I’ve been doing some research and have come across quite a few people who say Wellbutrin has made a significant difference in their depression and overall mental well-being. I’m interested in giving it a try, but I’m unsure what the quickest and most effective route would be to discuss getting a prescription.

Ideally, I’d like to explore Wellbutrin rather than going through another traditional SSRI, especially given my previous experience with Zoloft. I’m also hoping to get evaluated sooner rather than later, as my symptoms have been becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or have recommendations for the best way to go about this? I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who’s tried Wellbutrin after discontinuing 7-OH or kratom.

Positive Experience This is nuts... years of pain and I had lost hope until...

26F. I recently changed countries and had to change my psychiatrist and my whole mental health care team. Despite my previous country being a better and more developed one, I was suffering a lot and also... the doctors kept having me take meds that kept failing at the three month mark. I kept being miserable and just accepted my fate somehow.

Then this year was the worst and I had to move back here and be with family. I was extremely depressed and I stayed that way for four months until... last week I couldn't take it anymore. I booked an appointment with a psychiatrist and I went in literally listing the whole pharmacy of meds I have been taking since I was 13. From SSRIs to anti-psychotics to benzos, to some other atypical antidepressants you name it, I've probably been on it.

Well. He was so validating! He listened really well and eventually prescribed the bupropion 150xl. I had never tried it nor did I read on it... buttt oh my goodness! Its been five days and I can feel a change. Idk how to explain, I feel like I got more ballsy, I am less irritated and my sleep is actually restful. I initiate tasks easily and I keep at it. Biggest thing though, I have issues with binging on food- and oh my gosh!!! This medication really cut the food noise. Like I feel normal. I don't devour anything and everything anymore and I actually enjoy my food instead of just feeling hollow.

And no bad side effects so far except for dry mouth, mild nausea and a bit of gas. I am soooo thankful for this medication!! Years of pain and not being taken seriously... and now finally. I am grateful for those few days of relief and I just hope it lasts.

Question Question about bupropion cessation, CYP2D6 enzyme production, and Adderall XR.

Edit: I didn’t see the rule about putting the manufacturer in the post title until after I hit enter. I thought I only had to put it in the post body. Sorry about that! The manufacturer is Lupin Ph.

For those of you who took Wellbutrin XR and Adderall XR, and then stopped taking Wellbutrin, how long did it take for things to feel normal again?

I’ve been having some very concerning physical symptoms: pounding heart and breathing that feels unsatisfying along with insomnia. Bupropion blocks your liver from producing an enzyme called CYP2D6 which breaks down amphetamine. With this enzyme blocked, the amphetamines in Adderall will build and build in your system leading to all the concerning symptoms listed above. And before you say it, YES I am working with a psychiatrist.

Background:

I’ve been taking 300mg of Wellbutrin XR manufactured by Lupin for about 2 - 3 years. I started taking Adderall XR in late 2024 slowly working up to 30mg. Earlier this year I took a 5 month break from Adderall XR and then started taking it again at 20mg. This time around it was different. I started to experience the concerning physical symptoms I listed above. My psychiatrist and I decided to lower the Wellbutrin to 150mg but it didn’t help. I went nearly a week without taking my ADHD meds and it was pretty rough! But the physical symptoms ceased. My psychiatrist and I decided that it was time to stop taking Wellbutrin.

Wednesday the 14th was the last day I took Wellbutrin. I woke up on Thursday feeling pretty good and so I decided to take my Adderall on Friday. I felt great and decided to also take it today, Saturday The 17th. Today the physical symptoms returned much to my dismay!

Please, anyone who’s been through this before, how long did this last for you? An internet search indicates that it may take 2 WEEKS 💀 for my liver to start producing CYP2D6 normally again. Oh god, two weeks man!

Question Are these common side effects when starting bupropion?

I'm about 4 days in taking 150mgs of bupropion hcl xl pills that my psychiatrist prescribed after complaining of my libido being lower than before and my depression re surfacing again. Before bupropion my psychiatrist precribed me sertraline 25mgs an ssri for my depression. It helped me a lot with my depression before it started resurfacing again. My libido and sex drive did started coming back about a week ago but then I started bupropion and for the last four days my sex drive and libido is gone again.

Im also a stoner and while on sertraline I was still able to get high. But now being on bupropion while still on sertraline my highs are are more so body highs while the fuzzy head high is clear but with this sharp focus. Sometimes if I manage to get really high at best its like a fuzzy head high for a little bit but with a spaced out yet heavily focused effect.

I know its probably still very early but does this mean the drug isn't for me? Or is this common when for others when firsr started it out and it gets better later? I know when I started sertraline it took about 2-3 weeks for the positive effects to kick in. Not to mention while on bupropion I don't like how it suppress my appetite and gives me a little nausea but my weed use helps bring my apeitite back.

As an insomniac im lucky to so far still get sleep but the quality has been reduced. I normally sleep 7-8 hours. Lately I have been only getting 6 hours. Has me feeling a bit sluggish and irritated. Anyone else has these experiences? Does it get better? If i remember correctly the type of bupropion I am on I think is a slow release. What are the other versions like? I'm curious to know if maybe I would benefit from the non xl one.

Success Stories Success 🙌

Old cocktail ~~bupropion sr x2 100MG 40mg prozac briefly on concerta for a short duration, later changed to adderall xr 15MG

Current cocktail ~~ 200 bupropion sr x2 a day 30MG adderall (will likely end up on 40 or 50) and as of recently 7.5-15mg of mirtazapine at night (for sleep issues but is doubling as an anxiety med)

Upon adding in bupropion i was on prozac. At first i thought the bupropion was giving me a ton of side effects but it was actually the prozac. I had bouts of hypomania, tremors, constipation, sweats, sinus issues and I constantly felt anxious all day but I knew i was on the right path because although I felt terrible, I did feel better! (if that makes any sense.)

My mother used to take prozac until she developed a nasty dry lung, coughing fit. This happened to her twice! I randomly started developing a painful chest cold ontop of my already existing sinus troubles. After 7 days straight with no change I figured her reaction was likely hereditary. So, i peeled back on my dosage until I got down to 20 and then started taking mirtazapine 7.5 -15MG at night. I experinced zero prozac withdrawals and my chest/sinus issues went away.

By that point I felt as though i was up shit creek without a paddle so, I figured i would give bupropion another go. This time around I experienced no side effects. It worked right away for me. The 100 felt way too low so I took 200. Then one day I tried adding another 100 around 2:30 and I still felt fine yet better! Whereas before i could hardly handle 100mg sr alongside prozac.

I figured i would write this up in efforts of it helping someone in similar shoes. I have concluded that i am likely on the bipolar spectrum of some sort whereas all ssri's seem to trigger horrible side effects to the point where I often experience hypomania. (Until now, I always thought that happy awesome overwhelming joy was supposed to be there 🤣)

I may give XL another go in the upcoming weeks because I couldn't give it a fair shot at first seeing how combined with prozac/ritalin i felt as though i was pinned on m3th it was the craziest med experience I have ever had. I honestly thought I was going to have a heart attack.

If this sounds like you and you're giving up on bupropion i would highly consider tapering off of your ssri first and then giving bupropion a try to 100% rule out which med is the culprit. I always assumed I NEEDED an ssri for my terrible "anxiety" that wasn't even managed that well with ssri's in the first place. With that being said; A LOT of people do extremely well pairing it with an ssri. Sadly that isn't the case for me.

Chip chip cheerios!
