Mod Post Suggestions for the Sub Megathread

Alright this isn't a book suggestion post, it's a post about booksuggestions.

It would be nice to see what the users of this sub think would make a good idea. Changes, new rules, the works. Engagement is nice but more uncommon than we'd like to see. So we're hoping to get more people looking at posts, talking, and voting on good ones.

Can't guarantee anything would be implemented but they will be considered.

Mod Post Reminder Post about Self Promotion

I would like to remind all users that self promotion is banned by the subreddit's Rule 2.

Suspected self-promotion will be removed while repeated and confirmed cases of it will end up with a ban of some kind. If you continuously do it, especially with alt accounts, the book and author names will be added to the auto-mod's blacklist and automatically removed every time they are posted. We have had issues with this in the past and already put some authors in the auto-mod. Other book and lit subs have contacted us with reports of similar issues and we will be on the look out for the accounts named by them for similar behavior here.

We do not want to take actions we do not absolutely need to and the mod team operates with a philosophy of leniency and forgiveness but we will still enforce sub rules.

LGBTQ+ A gay fantasy book where the characters don't hate each other

A lot of gay fantasy/adventure books that sound interesting to me are always enemies to lovers. I want a book where the characters really really care about each other (from the very start!) and slowly fall in love.

A bit of angst and drama is okay but I don't want half of the book to be the two broken apart for a simple misunderstanding or little bicker. I also don't mind the genre too much, as long as it is mainly about the romance. For one, I really enjoyed Sasaki to Miyano, even though the genre is slice of life (which I'm not too into).

Basically as long as the characters are interesting and have great chemistry, I'll enjoy it. I'd just prefer fantasy as the genre, since I mostly read fantasy adventure books. I would also prefer it to be catered towards teens, but I'm okay with it being for adults too. Thank you!

Fiction Books to Read After East of Eden and Lonesone Dove

I just read East of Eden and Lonesome Dove back to back. Fantastic books, had me captivated from cover to cover. I am looking for my next book. I really like how easy to read these books are. I started Dandelion Wine by Bradbury and although I appreciate the descriptiveness and poetic nature of his writing, I find the style to require a bit more attentiveness and thought to digest what's going on. I guess I like a lazy, simple read with a captivating story.

Any suggestions along these lines for my next read?

Mystery/Thriller Book suggestions for someone who forgot how to enjoy them

I was an avid reader up until my 20s and just stopped..along with anything joyful in my life..but that's another topic.

Every book I try to start I get disinterested quickly. Most recent was Good Omens, that I've heard great things about but I found myself drifting elsewhere (ADHD). I tried to get back into Anne Rice but I read her books on repeats.

I need something new, has me in suspense, makes my draw drop, or laugh...you know not to picky🤣

To be honest I just need to find THAT book that will draw me again into a world I once loved.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Gift book

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit. I have a friend's birthday coming up, she reads a lot of Harry potter, fiction, fantasy, and romcom (not just romance she specified). She also says she doesn't care for smut in her books. She'll read anything fantasy or fiction. I mostly read nonfiction, so I don't know what to get her, and I would like to get her a book. She said her most recent good read was "better than the movies". Any recommendations?

Romance Bad girl × good guy kind-ish books

Okay so I'm currently obsessed with the dynamic of a woman who's a flirt and a man exhausted by her.

Like, she's flirty, pushes his buttons, teases him to hell. He's exasperated, scandalised, and completely rejects her advances - doesn't reciprocate. Or, not until a certain point at least.

My only limit is that i ONLY want slow-burn. Slow progression, maximum bantering, good emotional-payoff.

(I would also acccept bucky barnes × reader & steve rogers × reader ffs with his dynamic btw)

Other Best way to discover books to read?

I've found that scrolling endlessly on Barnes and Noble's website or Goodreads's lists rarely helps me discover something new that interests me. If I know the kind of book I'm looking for, it's easy enough to find lists, Reddit posts, etc. online. But what helps you discover books (especially fiction) when you don't already have a strong inclination?

Horror Bleak books - ideally horror, ones so bleak its like the end of The Mist, or the Gassed scene in Midsommar.

I love bleak literature, I cant get enough of it. I have The Road, and all Cormac's other books on my list. However, I need to broaden my horizons. Into utter dispair because its sort of my personal taste in books.

They don't have to be English speaking authors, if theres a translation out there, I will read it.

Horror Mature/Adult audience Books where male mc discovers they have powers, and gets revenge?

Hi guys. I’m looking for a book in which a male main character discovers they have powers, like a mage.

I don’t want powers to be common place. (Example, no superheroes or anything)

I would prefer it be a fantasy setting.

My ideal book find would be a male mage getting revenge on a kingdom that kills magic users, but I haven’t found that 😭😭😭

Non-fiction Salem Witch Trials

Hey all - what are your recs for a book on the Salem Witch Trials?

I find that whole ordeal intriguing and am in the mood to read about it.

Looking for non-fiction, something not too academic or dry, but rather engaging and with a good narrative. And hopefully in the range of 350 pages or less--I can be flexible on that, but def not looking for an 800 page tome.

What are your favorites?

Mystery/Thriller Books like The Unraveling by Vi Keeland

I really enjoy unreliable narrators. I love them even more when it involves obsession, stalking, and unraveling.

I’m looking for thriller/horror, but romance is not off the table (though I might have already read it if it’s romance).

I have read (and very much enjoyed) the entire You series!

Other Books for the Season?

I've been wanting to get back into reading, and since it's currently October, what are some good books for the holidays? Things like the Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury, but they don't have to be ABOUT the holiday, just something that fits the vibe for the holiday season (Christmas and other holidays included!).

Literary Fiction Recommend books for reading my partner to sleep?

Hi!

I’m in an LDR and my boyfriend has suffered from insomnia for YEARS. The only thing that consistently helps is when I read to him.

I’ve written poetry since high school so I started off by reading those but since they’re not that long I end up reading 2-3 every night basically…i’m running out of material over here lol

I thought it might be nice to read an actual novel so it’s just a consistent read for 20-30 minutes as he falls asleep.

I suppose just something cozy and easy to read- mainly because I just want him to focus on my voice and not worry about the subject matter. I’ve even considered reading children’s but those are fairly short as well

any ideas? open to anything! (romance, coming of age, fantasy etc)

Romance What is your favorite book that has the second chance romance trope?

I have just finished "Seven days in June", by Tia Williams, and I have fallen in love with the second chance romance trope! This is the second book I have read with this topic, after "Before I let go", by Kennedy Ryan, and I need more!

Please leave your suggestions below!

Thank you!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Grimdark suggestions

I just got done reading The Manifest Delusions and that may be the most fucked up series i have ever read (in a good way).

I know this is not a super popular subgenre but I was looking for recs outside of Bakker, Abercrombie, and Mark Lawrence. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Other Recommendations for my grandpa, who loves math, engineering, and problem-solving but isn’t much of a reader

My grandpa is one of the most capable and inventive people I know. He grew up poor, served in the Korean War, and spent his career working on airplanes. He has always loved building, inventing, and figuring out how things work. He can solve complex math problems in his head using methods he taught himself, and he can fix or build almost anything.

He’s quiet and has never been much of a reader, the Bible is the only book he’s finished, and he has never felt comfortable with technology or change. Recently, grief and cognitive decline have caused him to lose interest in many of the hobbies he once enjoyed. At his retirement-home coffee club, he has also felt embarrassed when others tease him for not keeping up with conversations or books. It’s difficult to see someone so intelligent and resourceful lose confidence in himself.

Id love to help him reconnect with the kind of thinking he has always enjoyed and remind him how much his abilities are valued. He loves math word problems, mechanical challenges, and practical problem-solving, but dislikes crosswords, word searches, language-based puzzles, and typical senior brain-game books. He has already seen all the current brain-game books, and he says no to all of them. I’m not looking for memory exercises, generic logic puzzles, or cognitive-rehabilitation activities. He wants a genuinely interesting problem to solve, something that respects his intelligence and gives him the satisfaction of working something out.

Does anyone recommend unusual math puzzle books, engineering or mechanical challenges, or illustrated books about how things work? Ideally, I’m looking for something intellectually engaging, light on reading, and not dependent on technology. I’d especially appreciate suggestions that feel like real problems or hands-on challenges rather than activities designed simply to keep someone occupied.
