Fan Issues?🪭🧵

Post image
11 Upvotes

I’m working on a fan sampler now and my cloth stitch fans both ended up like this with the passive threads all straight up and down. I think it’s got something to do with the way I tighten all the threads at the end of each row. Does anyone have any advice on how to make the fans look right and maintain tension?

Scaling thread

I am a beginner and enjoying myself, using #8 pearl cotton to learn with. I am mostly just practicing the stitches in different ways until I get comfortable with them, I know I'm looking at the tip of the iceberg as far as skills go. I have a stash of the pearl cotton, leftover from my big-stitch quilting days, and intend to use it as long as I can find patterns sized for it that will teach me things, but when do you know that you're ready to size down and go to thinner filaments? Is there a progression? How do you choose your thread size, aside from it's what the pattern specifies?

Straw for pillows- where to get?

Making my own pillow soon! Does it matter what straw I use? All the stores have the Halloween decorative straw on sale, but I'm not sure if that's something I should avoid, It's just a lot cheaper than straw from other places which is why I was wondering if it has any problems that could affect the pillow.

How are u guys learning?

Want to learn to make bobbin lace. The only thing I can find (closest to the NC coast where I live) is a 10wk class in Raleigh NC at the lace museum. I registered but I would rather not drive 4hrs back home late at night. The class is from 5-7pm.

Looks like I may have to cancel and buy books - thought I might save myself some agony by having a teacher. Oh well…

How are you guys learning? Thanks for any help yall can provide šŸ™šŸ¾

New to this and struggling to begin.

Hi everyone. I have been wanting to learn lace bobbin for years now and finally found a secondhand supply stash. Only now im struggling with how to begin. There are no lace making classes or tutors close to me so its down to books and tutorials.

Ive downloaded the shoal of fish patterns by alexandra stillwell and am currently setting up the work and already ran into my first issue. The pattern states to have my worker at point A and the rest of my pairs on seperate supports between point A and B. This would mean six pins in a very small space that is never going to fit. So there must be something im missing here.. can anyone help me by taking a look at this?

Where can I buy a bobbin lace beginner kit in Paris?

Hi everyone!
I’m visiting Paris and would love to buy a beginner bobbin lace kits (dentelle aux fuseaux) to take home.
I’m looking for kits that include wooden bobbins, a lace pillow, pins, thread and beginner patterns.
I’ve found a French supplier online (Midon Dentelle).
Does anyone know a physical shop in Paris where I can buy bobbin lace equipment or a complete beginner kit?
I’m happy to travel around Paris by public transport, and I don’t speak French, so any shop names or addresses would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much for your help!

Je cherche un magasin Ơ Paris qui vend des kits de dentelle aux fuseaux pour dƩbutants. Merci beaucoup !

Opinions on The Adventurous Lacemakers Patreon

I’ve been teaching myself torchon bobbin lace through a few books but I’ve been getting really into it. I found this group called The Adventurous Lacemakers online and it seems like they have a lot of content and some interesting looking classes/videos on their Patreon. Is anyone here a member of their Patreon? Have you ever heard anything about them? I’m debating paying for access once I’ve got the through a few more samplers in my books.

I was sweating trying to finish the border of this sampler🄵. I don’t know how I manage to do make every single possible mistake whenever I take up a new hobby but at least I was able to finish the sampler without figuring out how to replace a bobbin. Not yet! šŸ˜…šŸ–¤šŸ§µ

Spiders šŸ•·ļøšŸ–¤šŸ§µ

First spider sampler. I feel like I’m finally starting to get it. Everyone who is just starting out I highly recommend getting a notepad and writing down any observations or questions you have while working. Writing it out is really helping me figure out how all the bobbins are supposed to move. I tried using two different teal colored threads to emphasize the path of certain bobbin pairs through the pattern but I think the colors are a little too similar. That’s on me I wanted it to be prettier then my last high contrast sampler but I don’t think I’m there yet.

First piece of lace.

This is the first piece I have made and really enjoyed the simplicity of it. The finishing off was probably the hardest part for me and just doesn't look that great but it might be due to the tutorial I was following.

Any recommendations on videos or YouTube channels for learning patterns and techniques?

Dollar Store Lace Pillow

I needed a roller pillow but could not be bothered to walk further than the 2 blocks to the dollar store.

•Pool noodle (pillow/basket padding)–$1.50

•Basket–$3

•Plastic placemat (work surface)–$2

•Old blanket (pillow wrap)–already in stash

•Cardboard circles (pillow ends)–Random packaging

•Ribbon (to prevent rolling)–already in stash

•Blue fabric (cover)–already in stash

I glued the fabric around the basket padding and saved the sewing for the pillow itself. Took 1 evening to complete and was less complicated than I thought.

If I did this again, I would add some washers or fishing weights to the bottom of the basket before adding padding to prevent tipping. It doesn't seem to be a major inconvenience, but a heavier one would feel nicer. I might also cover the mat in fabric as bobbins landing on the plastic is quite loud and clicky, but they do slide nicely.

The ribbons to stop the pillow from rolling might be unnecessary. It fits pretty snugly, and I think there's enough friction to keep movement under control.

Paternoster "Threads for Lace" no longer available - help?

Hi guys, the more I progress with bobbin lace, the more I find myself wishing I had access to Brenda Paternoster's "Thread for Lace". Just to be able to access the data she's collected without having to purchase new thread to measure it myself, or seek info out from other people. Sadly, her website says all editions are sold out "and I have no plans at present to republish in any format."

It seems like such a valuable resource, it really pains me that it's not available at all. Do any of you have ideas on where to get it or borrow/access it?

I'm starting to wonder, is it a silly idea of me to think we could build a database like that ourselves as a community? It could be as simple as a public, shared Google sheet and as fancy as a dedicated webpage. I could definitely build a webpage for it. Should I? Any thoughts on that?

edit: of course, right after I posted this I found out the Textielbibliotheek at Museum de Kantfabriek has a copy available for borrowing. But I would love to have one as a permanent resource for myself, so my other questions still stand!

I really enjoyed this spider variation sampler! I have however gaines an unfortunate habit of calling the compound spiders "cultists" for horrible joke reasons and resultingly forgetting their actual name.

Protect/Store Lace Samplers

What do you all do with your finished lace pieces? I’m still a beginner so I’m not making anything fancy or making actual trim to sew to clothes but I want to do something with the samplers I’ve made so far. The issue is they are so fragile and I don’t know how to store them or where. One of the books I’m working out of says to make a scrapbook, has anyone done something like that? What about bookmarks? A lot of the beginner patterns I want to do next are bookmarks but does anyone do anything to protect the lace like some kind of sleeve or fabric you can fuse it to? Just trying to get some ideas.

What are these things?

Post image

I inherited a box with both bobbin lace bobbins and a tatting shuttle. I've tatted a bit and have been waiting for an opportunity to try bobbin lace! But in the box were also three pointy things that I can't quite make out, that may or may not have something to do with lacemaking.

The metal one is fairly sharp - I thought it might be for pulling elastic through a fabric tunnel, but the ones I have for that have a rounded tip.

The plastic one is fairly rounded with a flat cross-section. I thought it could be for clean corners in sewing, but it's a bit too rounded for that?

The wooden one is as pointy as you can make wood, but it's way too thick for a bodkin.

Simple torchon ground square

Post image
63 Upvotes

I’ve been working on making squares with all kinds of grounds. It’s a project that started in class, but I keep doing it because I learn so many techniques from it. This one is one of the simplest, just half stitch (I think it’s called?). It was surprisingly hard to keep tension and make no mistakes on such a ā€˜large’ piece (6x6 cm). This is the second try. On the other one I only found my mistake while I was already 8 rows further. I just tied it off and restarted 🤣
