We're a group of NBC News reporters exploring the state of American household finances and want to hear from people about the hardships they're facing.

Any responses here won't be included in our work on the topic. We're hoping to speak with folks after their initial comments. Thanks so much for all thoughts and considerations.

Here's our previous work on the topic from people we spoke to on Reddit regarding ACA premiums and DACA recipients struggling with the recent DSH shutdown.

META Regarding "This Post Was Removed by the Moderators" Message on Removed Posts

Hello All,

If you guys have a post removed seconds after submitting it, it was removed by the AutoMod; The AutoMod is technically a member of the Mod team, which is why the notification on the removed post will say "This post was removed by a member of [insert subreddit]". This is also the case for all subreddits on Reddit. This doesn't actually mean the human mods removed your post.

There are AutoMod systems implemented to curtail trolls and bad-faith actors, sometimes viable posts are caught up by the system, we cannot control this, we can only circumvent the removal by approving the post, or confirm the removal. The AutoMod is necessary, but it is not perfect and it makes mistakes.

If you notice your post was removed and there is no removal reason, then it was the AutoMod. If you want it to be reinstated immediately, please link the post within ModMail and ask for it to be reviewed; Please do not accuse us of being malicious or lying about not removing the post when we tell you we did not, as this happens almost daily, several times a day. If a human moderator here ever removes a post, a reason will be given. If there was none given, it literally was not us. Please refrain from getting angry with us about posts removed by the AutoMod, we don't have any reason to lie to you. If we review the post and deem it will not be approved, you will be told why (this only happens if it is not within subreddit rules). We will not approve posts from brand-new or burner accounts. Anybody who gets aggressive, verbally abusive, or hostile in the ModMail will just be ignored from now on.

Posts can also be removed administrators or by admin's A.I. system; If a post is removed by Admin or their system, there is nothing we can do about it. You have to file the post appeal with admin, we aren't able to do it on your behalf.

Thank you!

Discussion I hate the way we can see through people's fake liking for us

It just feels like if someone is discarded by their own race or something they'll turn to like Black women. If not that then they'll use fetishization terms to call out that they like Black women (I. e. Chocolate, food terms). This just shows they like us for our race not individuality. I would 100 percent prefer people liking me for my individuality and me rather than just trying to say they want a black girl. I just don't see us as the type of people to be that kind of fetish or put on a high pedestal like a Non-black latina or someone who's asian. Especially knowing our history and how we're still treated across the diaspora. It just seems like a charity case, if you want to appreciate Black women you can do so by just identifying us as women like any other.

What makes it worse tho is some black women will give into these people's posts, and then ask for their validation.

Rant Mother enables bullying all my life from others including family.

’m 34f and my brother is 29. Ever since he came on this earth he treated me like shit. He gets along with my two sisters but me I’m always the butt end of his jokes. He’s called me ugly before and joked about it. When it hurt me so bad my mom told me to get out of her face. He even punched me in the stomach when he was younger and when it hurt and I cried my mother told me to shut up. He even body shames me and told me I have a fat neck. And tonight he got really sarcastic with me on the phone. When it bothered me I called my mom because I don’t have any other family members who care and I don’t have friends she told me to get off her phone with that mess. I don’t know why I became the target in my family for this stuff to happen and I’m always laughed at even by my cousins and of course my mom doesn’t care because she always enabled it.

*she called me back and said why do I need to talk to people when nobody wants to hear my shit. When I was told I can talk to a trusted family member or friend then told me I should talk to God. Then yelled “get this motherfucker off my phone” “this mother fucker” directed towards me.

Question African woman (26F) in Perth, Australia feeling stuck "in between" socially. Has anyone else experienced this, and did moving cities help?

I'm Nigerian and living in Perth, Australia. Been here for 10 years now, and I'm going through the loneliest season of my life. I was very social at uni, so this feeling is new and honestly quite hard.

I feel caught between two worlds. Much of the African community here is very church and family focused, and mostly based in the suburbs. I respect that, but it isn't really me. I love going out, travelling and meeting people from all walks of life, I loved living in London for 1 year. Even with my own siblings, we don't really get along, partly because they're very church-centred and our interests are quite different.

At the same time, I often feel like an outsider in local Australian friend groups. I'm tall (5'11), African and wear braids, so I stand out. People rarely approach me first, and I usually have to do most of the work to stay included. I host games nights and organise catch-ups, but when I stop reaching out, the invitations don't really come back.

So I'm in this in-between space where I don't fully belong anywhere, and it's been really isolating. I've also applied for postgraduate medicine and I'm waiting on offers, so there's a chance I'll move to Geelong, near Melbourne. Part of me hopes it will be a fresh start. Another part worries I'll just end up in the same situation somewhere new. Maybe this is just something that happens when you're older

If you've been through something similar, I'd love to hear: Which city did you find most welcoming for making friends as an African or Black person? If you moved, how did you build a social circle from scratch? Are there any groups, clubs or communities you'd recommend, particularly in Geelong or Melbourne? Thank you for reading🙏

Rant Confronted my friend and…

So i made a post days ago about discovering my yt friend listening to a kinda xenophobic song during a car ride.
I decided to confront her about it, but her explanations confused me more, and i don’t know if she told me the truth…
So her first explanation was that she « don’t understand english » because she thought that i was talking about an american singer. The lyrics was in our language, and not english…
Then she told me that it was in her playlist her friend share with her, and that’s was not her song.
And then after that, she told me that it’s the Spotify algorithm that put this song in her listening. And this when she told me that, i was a little bit confused. Because what kind of song you have to listen in order to Spotify to put this kind of song in your profile…
After that I tell her that i trust her and i came back home, but i feel so so weird.
I don’t know if i can trust her again. I feel bad because i feel like she was telling the truth, but at the same time, i feel like dumb…

Advice Needed How do I support my friend dealing with racism in a predominantly white school?

Firstly I never use Reddit so I’m sorry if there are any errors or mistakes in my writing style!! I’m sixteen years old and currently going high school in rural Mississippi. I am also very very white.

Recently I had a very deep conversation with my friend different struggles we have at school and she started discussing how badly the racism at school has affected her, specifically as a dark skinned girl. She grew up going to a predominantly black school in New Orleans and only moved here within the last few years so the change in environment was very jarring for her.

My friend said she wasn’t so much phased by the racism by white kids, because she expected them to be ignorant, as she was by the racism from other kids of color. We also went into how deep racism is ingrained into her life and the culture here at large and how it evens goes back to her home when she leaves school. I said I was sorry and explained that because of my whiteness that I could never begin to properly understand what’s she was going through. Though I tried to relate and comfort her the best I could, I still feel like I’m not doing enough for her.

I love her and I just want to help but I’m not sure how. Any advice would be super appreciated!!

Advice Needed Regulate emotions- instantly

So I’m 23 and I have come to the conclusion that I can not regulate my emotions as well as I should.

Basically I was going somewhere with my mum and a taxi driver and basically we were coming back and unfortunately the taxi driver basically parked at the wrong space- he has a whole bunch of things he had to do that day- which is fine but but basically to cut the long story short- he was upset because he is going to be late. He raised his voice at me and I raised tried to highlight the other perspectives to him, however he kept getting mad and shouted at me. My mum came in and also shouted at me at something a bit unrelated (about a drink). This might should stupid but I kinda had- walls closing in on me and my breathing went rapid, I did cry for a while because it was stressful. Does anyone have any in the moment strategies for me when it comes to this? because I know it has effects me in terms of external factors.

For context also ADHD and autistic female who is on medication.

Ongoing-Relationship Advice Y’ALLLLLL 😭😭😭 WHY DID THIS MAN TELL ME HE USED TO BE SCARED OF BLACK PEOPLE???

Y’allllllllllllll fr fr fr 💀💀💀 my jaw is on the FLOOR because WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL

Okay, I'm Black. That's all you need to know because I'm not about to explain my entire culture just for somebody to get weird in the comments sorry 🙏🏾

Anyway, I went on a date with a non black guy. Where I live, it's diverse as FUCK. Black people, Asians, Indians, dark skinned people, everybody. Seeing different races is literally NORMAL here. Nobody is having a damn cultural awakening because they saw a Black person at the grocery store

So this guy grew up abroad but is originally from where I live and recently moved back

We were talking on the app, and everything seemed normal. No obvious red flags, decent conversation, all that

WE GET ON THE DATE

Tell me why this man casually drops the N word into conversation and starts telling me how, at university, he was considered the darkest because people called him the N word

You are WHITE. WHITEEEEEE. Not even a little ambiguous. European looking white. The ancestors are not confused about this one

And I'm sitting there like ???????? because how do you even respond to that in a normal conversation???

BUT WAIT. THERE'S MORE

This man proceeds to tell me he USED TO BE RACIST 😭😭😭😭😭

Apparently, he had never seen Black people growing up, and the first time he saw one, he used to get SCARED

SCARED OF WHAT, MY BROTHER????? 💀💀💀

Was I supposed to be sitting there nodding like this was a perfectly reasonable childhood experience???

He then explains that he's grown now because he's been exposed to diversity since moving back

EXPOSED TO DIVERSITY????? 😭😭😭

LIKE IT'S A NEW MEDICATION HE'S BEEN TAKING FOR SIX MONTHS

Anyway, at that point, I was mentally clocked OUT. I told him I needed to go, and he insisted on driving me home. He even opened the car door for me, which made the entire thing even more bizarre because WHY ARE WE DOING GENTLEMANLY ACTS OF SERVICE AFTER YOUR RACISM CONFESSION???

The date ended. He unmatched me

GOOD. 😭😭😭 I was going to unmatch him anyway, so thank you for saving me one click, king

But seriously, I'm still baffled because I'm genuinely not used to this kind of interaction. Where I live, people are incredibly diverse, and Black and brown people are part of the everyday community. Obviously, racism exists everywhere, but somebody telling me they were literally AFRAID of Black people because they'd never seen one before is not something I expected to hear on a DATE

I went out looking for a man, and somehow ended up being the diversity training department

I DID NOT APPLY FOR THIS POSITION 💀

Ps please don't ask where I live. I'm not American, and I don't want this turning into a weird interrogation about my country or culture. I'm just here to process the fact that this man sat across from me and casually gave me his racism origin story like we were discussing his favorite childhood cartoon

Rant Not having any black girls as friends is draining me...

I'm the only black girl at work, the only black girl in my friend group, the only black woman in my partner's side of the family. My whole family lives on the other side of the country, so i don't have them either. and I feel so freaking isolated. I don't even mind if its not a deep connection, just someone to take cute pics with and talk about random stuff. The non-black girls that i'm friends with are lovely, I cherish them so much. I just wish I had someone here that looks like me and understands the struggles of being a black girl. I feel so disconnected from the black girl experience because I don't have a single black female friend and it genuinely makes me want to cry

The Internet Strikes Again Madame Joyce?!! Are we okay??

I’m not a consistent viewer of her podcast, but I watch enough to know she obviously had self image insecurities. However, she talked a lot about promoting Afrocentric features and hair texture. Now she’s disappeared to recover from a nose job? Seriously? It’s gotten too much. I hate this for us young black women - thinking we need to physically assimilate to be accepted by our counterparts. Honestly, I feel it’s the black men that do us in too. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Rant *Cough* *Cough* is this a safe space?..

Over this summer I decided to have some fun and go on a couple dates, all dating apps btw cause I dont get asked out irl.

I started to realise I only matched with white guys and only went on dates with white guys.

I was getting a little worried because of course im attracted to black guys I just didnt know why I only liked white guys on dating apps.

I almost feel like I've been indoctrinated to prefer interacial relationships through youtube, tiktok etc since I was a kid.

Just to note I find black men more attractive than white men btw. So this whole experience has made me quit dating apps for the forseeable future and I've blocked any interacial couples I see on social media.

Rant Fans Forgot About Baela??? **HOTD S3 SPOILERS** Spoiler

(House of the Dragon for those who don’t know)
I know this is really random and probably me just being sensitive because it’s almost time for my period, but HOTD ended this year (obviously) and I noticed something that stressed me out SO BAD about the fandom both with the Team Green and Team Black fans. I SWEAR THIS HAS TO DO WITH BLACK GIRLS, I PROMISE! JUST HEAR ME OUT!

Anyone who watched HOTD S3 was probably devastated by Jace’s death, as was I. But something I immediately noticed on social media the night of the episode airing and to the present now is how the entire fandom basically “forgot” about the fact Baela and Jace were married, and immediately started making edits about “poor Helaena” and how everyone shipped them, or how Jace wouldn’t have died if he married Helaena instead of Baela. And while I have no beef with shipping culture (because honestly, everybody’s related in that show. Calling any ship bad is laughable) it struck me as so strange that everyone forgot about his actual wife/betrothed and was worried about the bug girl who literally wasn’t impacted by his death at all, IN MY OPINION.

I brushed this off but I was kinda squinting like, “this feels…anti-Baela. Anti…Black.” But again, I was like maybe I’m reaching. Then, when Helaena died, MORE of those edits of Helaena x Jace started coming out, and then comments, and then think pieces from both sides about how everyone shopped them and how Baela and Jace were just “better as friends”, even though they are LITERALLY betrothed. And any edit or post of Baela x Jace is just “I love their friendship 😍😍😍”. Like, it feels like the fandom has passive-aggressively hated Baela and I have no one to talk to about this outside of this subreddit because I know if I posted this in any of the HOTD subreddits or on any other fandom social media spot, I’d get eaten alive.

I just see this as such a theme in media with Black women love interests, and it’s even worse in the fantasy/medieval based fandoms. Like, this is genuinely my worst fear for my Black characters should I publish the fantasy novels I write. God forbid I make it abundantly clear two characters are a couple and readers are like, “They are SUCH good friends with so-and-so.” And I know I’m grown and it maybe isn’t that deep, but it is to me! 🤣

Rant Since nobody else gon say it…

There's always conversation about black people who grew up in predominantly white areas being white washed... but as someone who grew up in a predominantly black area, l've came across black people who were still colorist, still putting whiteness or any kind of non blackness on pedestals, making fun of black woman’s hair, treating racism like a joke. Like literally during the whole George Floyd situation back in 2020, it was BLACK PEOPLE from my area on Facebook making jokes. I can really go all day. And it just shows how a lot of black people be having black friends, black partners, ATTENDING HBCUS AND OTHER BLACK SPACES, and STILLLLLLL have the same mindset as the typical whitewashed person, sometimes even worse. But I digress.

Advice Needed Should I text him and ask to hang as friends…?

Okay so basically, I (F 20) went on this Tinder date a month ago. Genuinely of all the Tinder dates I’ve had, it’s been the only truly successful one.

He’s (M 21) handsome, tall, kind, smart, funny, and most importantly not anti-Black. He asked my fav book, and I said Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. He actually knew what I was talking about AND had read the book which made me happy because I don’t meet a lot of people who have read/heard of that book. We talked for hours and genuinely had a good date and planned to hang again.

The first date was Sat and my birthday was Monday. He didn’t say happy birthday. Mind you, he definitely knew it was my birthday because I posted it multiple times on my story (not to birthday wish farm but you get the gist), and I mentioned it in conversation during the date, because he asked if I had been old enough to vote in the 2024 election. Idk if I’m “allowed” to feel a type of way about that because we are supposed to just be casual. But I did think that was a little weird.

We were supposed to hang that Wednesday, but plans fell through because we both had hw. Then we were supposed to hang during the weekend, but I ended up having a funeral to attend so those plans fell through too. It’s just annoying making plans because we’re both busy college students. But even still, I was free last weekend (which is when we usually text) and he didn’t ask to hang or anything.

I honestly can’t tell if he does or doesn’t like me. He says he enjoys our convos and thinks talking to me is fun, and we also did both want to have sex with each other. I do always feel awkward texting first though because I know this is supposed to be casual, and he is objectively busier than me (not saying that to down on myself).

But I lowkey felt like I was starting to like him tm without it being reciprocated. So I asked if he thought we should just be friends. He said “I understand, friends it is.” Idk if he misunderstood my question and thought it was a statement, this convo happened over text. But break is coming up, and I do want to hang again.

Would it be weird to ask him to hang again. Should I take the lack of birthday text, and semi-dryness (he did say he enjoyed talking to me and thought our conversations were fun, he’s kinda just a bad texter confusingly enough) as a sign to dead this?

I feel so conflicted because I genuinely do like him and would want to at LEAST be friends. But idk if I’m just not taking the hint or something??? Please be honest with me.

Discussion White people on reddit not able to take accountable or acknowledge racial conversations without feeling attacked

I noticed on reddit when you say anything white and describe that person, they'll act like why couldn't someone just say their character instead of their racial identity?! Maybe because it absolutely matters in the story. I just saw a post on a subreddit about a TV character trope and I'm sure OP a lot of the time has seen the majority if not all, White women play that trope. In the comment sections people were acting like it's that big of a deal instead of understanding why they constantly see the character as "White" or something they saw as a personal attack. Not surprised since Reddit is majority white.

Then in the comment section one white person then said something that wasn't even related to the post saying, "There's no colonizer alive today," which is a very ignorant statement. There may not be "Colonizers" but there's neo-colonialist? How ignorant do some people have to be.

(I'll show screenshots in comments)

Edit: One of them just responded to me, and of course called colonization some "Old shit" (Another screenshot

Hair, Skincare, & Beauty Help! Skincare advice

I’ve been trying this new perfume/oil and I usually put a bit on my chest, wrists and a bit near my ears, I’ve never had this happen before (I use this brand a lot) but it seems I’m having a reaction to the oil. I’ve developed a rash only on my chest area and near my ears and it’s driving me crazy looking at it 😫.

After searching online, I believe it might be Contact Dermatitis. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I can use to clear it up? (Yes I am no longer using the perfume/oil)

I will attach a pic in the comments if I can!

Discussion What's your favorite "Flop" movie?

By "Flop" movie I mean movies that either aren't widely known or liked for some reason, not that it was actually a flop (even though these can make into the category),

Feel free to share why you like this movie!

Me: Penelope (2006)

Everything about is ridiculous but James McAvoy was amazing to look at it and it is so silly that it distracted me for a solid one and a half hour.

Rant Like can we please stop instantly blaming women

I truly need black women to extended grace to other black women. And or the benefit of the doubt.
Some people dont notice when our hair looks a certain way but a black woman will and not the majority of the time BUT enough for me to notice that they will point it out. Especially older black women. If someone clothes are wrinkled, if they gained weight, if theyre too thin, if theyre going down a mental spiral and are making mistakes, or if theyre defending themselves.

Today someone posted about a lifestyle youtuber who is a black woman that was arrested back in july. We know that shot she someone but we dont know ANYTHING else. The comments are filled with other black women instantly saying “i knew something was off about her” “i thought she was normal” and other just horrendous things. Not one singular comment talking about how we don’t know what happened, we dont know if she was defending herself especially because the person shot was a man. And im SORRY BUT it is NOT far fetched that it could be self defense. Its just not!
Most back women that are murdered are murder by men they KNOW.
Instead of thinking that way which frankly is common fucking sense, people are making her the crazy one. Is that what white people do to us? Why tf are we doing it to each other. Comments talking about her recent mental health why dont you think “hmm i wonder if the man she shot was cause that mental illness” no instant shes crazy.

Black women and native women have these HIGHEST level of domestic violence in america. Im not saying to blatantly support her or anything but to create a dogpile like the world doesn’t give the shittiest end of the stick is WILD.
Dont we all complain about how our mother, aunts, sisters, grandmother’s instant blamed us for things? So instead of deprogramming we are just perpetuating it?!

Can we extended the benefit of the doubt? Can we attend some grace? Can we at least fucking WAIT and give other black women a chance? Like fuck bro no one else does.

The Internet Strikes Again "that's some white people sh*t"

I've been seeing a lot of conversations about Mike Flanagan's Carrie, particularly within the Black community, with people arguing that only white kids would treat Carrie the way her classmates did, and that if Carrie were in a predominantly Black school, things would have played out differently.

And I beg to differ

Have we forgotten how cruel children can be? Black kids bully people, too. Black teenagers can be vicious, humiliating, and downright sadistic. Maybe they won't dump pig's blood on your head, but they can absolutely make your life a living hell.

When I was a child, no white kid poured pig's blood on me. But Black kids forced me to sit on a chair covered in broken glass because they thought it would be "funny"...

So seeing a number of black folks talk about how Carrie would have been accepted in a a black school I just gotta laugh 😭

Like yes it fuckin does...try being an autistic or neurodivergent black girl...they might not pour pigs blood but they'll definitely let you know they see you as an *other*
