Pepper mills: inverted design, and ceramic mechanisms?

Hi folks,

I'm curious why ceramic mechanisms aren't more popular, and why inverted mills aren't more popular? Our current mill is a Cole Mason w/ a glass jar and an inverted design. I like the fact that there is no counter top mess w/ the inverted design. I like that it is glass. I like seeing how much is in the mill, it seems pretty perfect other than the mechanism being in poor shape after 6 or 7 years.

No interest in the high-output meat-bro or professional use type mills like Unicorn/TreSpade or the more expensive Pepper Cannon or Hexmill. Of all those, though, the Hexmill perhaps appeals the most due to the stainless mechanism. I don't mind if it's only 90% as good as carbon steel if it has a chance of lasting 2x as long. I like carbon steel knives but carbon steel in a mill seems a poor match for our use over steaming food and pots.

I see a Crushgrind mill called the Kala that looks like a good replacement for our Cole Mason, but with a ceramic mechanism. On the one hand I'm happy to just buy it and see how we get on with it. On the other hand I ended up here looking for info so thought I'd ask for opinions, and am happy to be persuaded in other directions, but please keep in mind we are never going to need to grind pepper faster and aren't cooking meat / making rubs.

Cheers for thoughts.

Santinni London Coats?

Considering getting a 100% wool, cashmere/wool blend, or similar type of coat that will last. Is Santinni good for that? I absolutely love how they look and am hoping the quality would be worth the price!

What styles/ details should I look for? I am looking for a versatile one that won’t look too theatrical.

Also what’s your ideal length for a bifl Winter coat?

Any horizontal fans with bottom intake?

Looking to mount a fan above my hydronic radiator to circulate the air around the room better. Trying to find one that will have an intake from the bottom (pull up the hot air from radiator) and blow it out horizontally at 90 degrees or close to it.

The area is pretty narrow so I’d really like one that can sit flush on the wall. Having a hard time finding one that fits the requirements if anyone has any suggestions? Thanks!

If BIFL should not be taken too literally, could almost any product be ‘BIFL’?

A number of perspectives:

  1. “Guaranteed for the expected lifetime of a product” means very little to me.
  2. “Guaranteed for the first owner” means a bit more, but is hard to proof, since receipts are required.
  3. “Lifetime guarantee” sounds promising, but who’s lifetime?

My point is: originally, BIFL to me meant a product that you would buy once, and that would be useful for the rest of your life. Classical example would be the cast iron skillet or Dutch oven.

But also because of this subreddit, I came to realize that it is more than that. I am looking for examples to inspire myself. Thank you!🙏

Wool tshirts women’s

I’m female and I need to upgrade my t shirt game. I’d love some wool (or mostly wool) long sleeve t shirts that I can wear by themselves. Crappy wool seems to make me pretty itchy. But I’ve read that good quality merino probably wouldn’t. I’d be open to other types of wool like alpaca if it’s also not itchy. Needs to be washing machine friendly, but I can hang to dry if necessary. Any suggestions?

BIFL winter jacket

Hi all,

I'm looking for a BIFL winter jacket. I have a 15 year old NorthFace arctic jacket, and while still decent, material is starting to fray.
I'd like something with a very durable shell (probably canvas style), at least water resistent (waxed would be good) and some sort of insulation that won't pile and fail like down eventually will, but still work for down to -20 degrees. I know Filson has some, but I heard mixed reviews about their quality lately, also their true winter jacket is a down filled one.

Any ideas/suggestion?

magsafe kickstand case, built-in stand or separate accessory?

i'm deciding whether to get a magsafe case with a built-in kickstand or just use a regular case with a separate magnetic stand. the built-in option seems more convenient, especially when traveling, but i'm wondering if having a hinge attached to the case creates more potential issues over time. i'd be looking at how stable the stand feels, whether the magnetic connection is dependable, whether the finish holds up and whether the case still fits properly after regular use.

About 5 years of wear on my Danner Quarry workboots (welding, fab, manual labor, hiking, and daily wear) They couldn't resole because of the upper being torn- this pair will get a toe cap protector and ideally last even longer.

Must be a better way to find good durable products

Hey guys!

I got fed up trying to find good and durable products. It takes forever to find one, and when you think that you found a good one via subreddits and forums, the version that you can now buy is crap.

So, it got me thinking that there must be a better way. Especially with all the people leaving legit reviews on forums like this BIFL subreddit. So I came up with an idea and built an MVP to see if people would find this useful.

It’s basically a platform that takes your review for a product. An LLM extracts the pros and cons, and rates the products based on all those reviews. You can browse the reviews and filter them. With each review, we ask for ownership period so that we extract durability graphs. I also plan to build an Enshittification Index to warn people that a product has degraded in quality.

My ask

Go to forkeepsguild.com and give me some feedback here. The app has demo data but the navigation is fully functional just like you would if it was real. Explore the data, it’s actually funny. Let me know if you would use it? Would you participate and leave a review? Anything you share would be useful to me.

If you want more context: how it works and why I built it.

Thanks a lot!

Polarized sunglasses - FROM EU

I would like to buy some durable but low price sunglasses (under 50 bucks).

I was searching on BIFL communities but I found only US brands which is very annoying because for cheap items you are charged more for the shipping costs than for the item cost per se.

Does anyone have any suggestion for polarized sunglasses, UV400 and CE certifications?

Free quality check extension

I built buywise.fyi - a free web extension which checks the product page you're looking at and instantly tells you if it's low quality, overpriced, fake-discounted, and more. It uses a new type of AI model which is high accuracy & very fast.

I built it to be private & secure - it will refuse to send data from non-shopping pages, and it doesn't require logins or passwords by default.

The extension is totally free and costs me a small amount of money. I'm not selling anything inside it, just looking for some early adopter feedback.

As an aside, I'm also the developer of mytrustedbrands.com, a brand curation site to shop exclusively high quality brands on amazon. After building this site, I wanted a more robust solution to the problem of low quality products in online shopping which inspired me to build buywise.fyi

Cheers

Need a warm men's coat for cold, wet weather, but I do care about fashion

What are the best options for winter in Oregon? This means it can't be suede or leather, should be able to withstand wet, but would also like some kind of insulation lining. I always favor more natural materials and a more heritage look, NOT something from REI or techwear. Would love some kind of sherling collar, or some alpaca lining, though down is acceptable as well.

Electric toothbrush

I've had a Phillips Sonicare toothbrush for 13 years. When it dies, what should I replace it with? Looking for something with less wasteful brush heads, if possible, but I care most about it being electric and having a long life.

Vuori (sad)

I was a massive Vuori fan during COVID. Expensive, but everything I bought from about 2020-2024/25 has lasted incredibly well. I still wear the first sweatshirt I bought often.

Fast forward to my most recent purchase, from a Vuori store in NYC. Even in the store, I could tell the fabric was different, but I thought I’d trust Vuori.

After wearing this shirt twice, it had already pilled extensively. It made me so sad that a brand I’ve trusted has gone so far in the other direction.

Can anyone recommend an athletic workwear company for tall guys that is BIFL?
