What happens when you lose your shadow?

Some songs begin with a melody. Others begin with a moment that changes everything.

For Jacob Klein, the artist behind i give my friends flowers, his new single “FEEL LIKE” emerged in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which devastated parts of Asheville in 2024.

Written on a rescued piano, the song became a way of processing the uncertainty that follows a life-changing experience.

It was originally one of the first ideas created for his debut album, *DOGSTAR 1*, a project built around memory, grief, relationships and the ways people change throughout their lives.

But “FEEL LIKE” didn't quite find its place on the record.

Instead, Klein returned to it later, developing its sound through layered guitars, organic percussion, chopped samples and synthesizers.

The result is a darker, more immersive track that captures the strange feeling of sensing an important change before knowing exactly what it means.

And its accompanying music video takes that idea somewhere unexpected.

Set in a surreal, near-future New York, the film follows Jacob as he searches for his missing shadow with the help of a mysterious groundskeeper.

It's a story about identity, memory and the versions of ourselves we sometimes leave behind.

The video draws on magical realism, mythology and nostalgic animation, creating a visual world that feels both familiar and unsettling.

Together, the song and film mark a transition between two chapters of the project.

While DOGSTAR 1 explored the emotional landscapes of loss and connection, the upcoming DOGSTAR 2, expected in summer 2027, promises to move further into darker electronic territory.

​The sonic journey extends far beyond the classic image of a bedroom at 3:00 AM with headphones on and dim lighting. It evokes intense and cinematic visual scenarios: imagine being under the stars on a hill or in front of a cliff watching the sunset together with the person you desire or your crush. It is an immersive experience that feels intimate yet open to infinity.

​Universal Themes and Situations

​It is not a selection designed exclusively for a teenage audience, but a true universal space that adapts to many phases and ages of life, touching upon themes such as:

​Broken hearts and suspended relationships.

​Friendships drifting apart or changing over time.

​Loneliness, nostalgia, and moments of deep reflection.

​The simple pursuit of relaxation, detachment, and mental tranquility.

​A Highly Studied, Niche Selection

​The playlist deliberately avoids commercial clichés or overly predictable, tear-jerking tracks heard and re-heard on the radio (steering clear of heavy or overly melodramatic forced tones). Instead, it is the result of meticulous research: it includes niche tracks and carefully fits in songs that at first glance might have seemed unthinkable for this genre, yet have been perfectly contextualized within the tracklist.

​The common thread harmoniously unites different worlds:

​Oneiric and atmospheric sounds: Cornerstone pieces of dream pop and indie rock such as Space Song by Beach House or tracks by Radiohead.

​Youthful vibes and lo-fi: Delicate nuances reminiscent of Yung Kai's style (with tracks like blue) and more intimate bedroom pop.

​Rock, alternative, and soundtrack incursions: From romantic, melancholic rock guitar stylings (such as Blink-182 or Foo Fighters) to gems and evocative acoustic touches reminiscent of The Last of Us imagery.

​A living musical ecosystem, reasoned track by track, destined to grow and continuously update itself.

Recorded on tape with a tascam 4 track and old drum machine.

she was featured on empathica by coin locker kid, which led me to listen to her 2011 self titled album. IT WAS REALLY GOOD! she also released an album in 2016... and then seemingly vanished. cant find really anything else about her. theres a video from about a year ago of her performing live but i cant actually tell it was recorded a year ago. any help is appreciated.
