Avocado plant Avocado has white leafs / albinism in avocados

INTRODUCTION: As a MOD I've watched this for a long time and finally want to make this post to pin it and decrease the number of people asking this because it keeps increasing.

WHAT IS IT?: White avocados as seen on these pictures that I just grabbed from other reddit posts, have a form of albinism.

Usually plant leafs are mostly green because it is the "color of chlorophyll" or if I remember correctly from Biology class a few years ago, the only color that isn't absorbed by it to make photosynthesis and thus it reflects and looks green.

The reason that these leafs are white are thus because they do not contain any chlorophyll.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR THE PLANT?: If leafs don't contain any chlorophyll it means there can't be photosynthesis which means the plant cannot produce energy on itself.

For an avocado that isn't too bad in the beginning because it still has its seed which has energy reservoirs, but they will be exhausted at some point.

For its survival the avocado thus needs to reach a turnaround point and produce green leafs containing chlorophyll later which happens to some but not all so it's a wait and see.

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?: This is not clear but there has been research about it: Research of Albinism in Avocados If I remember correctly the research itself or another source I found, comes to the conclusion that this happens increasingly because Avocados are often picked very early to still be ripe or before ripe despite long travelling times, when they arrive in their destination country after export/import.

END: I hope this helps clear up things and decreases the number of posts regarding this at least a little.

Hi! This avocado tree was grown from a pit bought from the store. Bought an avocado and my partner got the pit to sprout this was in 2021. The baby sprout in first picture is when he first potted in the bag.

More accurate timeline.

For context: living in bay area California.
Soil is amazing! We have salamanders living it😳

There is an avocado tree in the neighborhood.
We also bought a 5 year old avocao tree from facebook marketplace. Planted both the same summer. That one isnt as big or beared as much fruit.

Growing from seed What’s going on with my plant?

Post image

Growth had seemingly stopped for a while and lately I’ve noticed the leaves are looking like this. Some new leaves just appeared but I’m worried about the health of the plant. I started from a seed about a year ago.

I had been dealing with an issue of fungus gnats and I’ve successfully eradicated them about a month ago. I was watering with “mosquito bits” to help kill then and I’m wondering if that chemical plus tap water has hurt the plant? Prior to this it went 2 weeks without watering when I went on a trip and I’ve watered only once since.

Growing from seed A and B flowers on same tree

my tree flowered for the first time this month and happy to report hand pollination has resulted in some tiny baby avos already visible

but i noticed during my twice daily trips out to the tree with my paint brush that my tree did not seem to be either A or B in terms of flowering pattern. i would often see both gender flowers fully open in the afternoon. not like some partially shutting from the morning

is that unusual or just because it is a young tree and it will settle into it?

i thought i was imagining it the first time but happened repeatedly

Container plants (indoor or outdoor) Avocado Old Leaf Brown

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I have an avocado plant in a pot, and I’ve noticed that the older leaves keep turning brown. The new growth looks fine, but eventually, the older leaves start browning and falling off.

I water it regularly about once a week and it’s outdoor most of the time with good light. I’m wondering if this is normal or if there’s something wrong with the plant. Could it be overwatering, underwatering, or maybe a nutrient issue?

Any advice or tips from those who’ve grown avocados in pots would be super helpful!

Thanks in advance!

Growing from seed Seed swaps

Does anyone here happen to Swap Avocado seeds or send out their extra seeds ? I’d pay for shipping for a few different varieties , already growing Hass and Reed so I’d like to get into other varieties via seed.

Mods please delete if post is not allowed , simply looking for other varieties and not sure if there are any other groups for this topic .

Found this on a younger tree in a community garden. No tags/labels.

It’s smooth like Fuerte and if not for the elongated shape I would have said it’s a Fuerte, as there are lots of smaller cukes too. However all avocados I found on it is elongated.

Could it be a Russel?

Growing from seed Bright spots on my avocado

Hello 👋

After numerous tries at growing an avocado froom seed I finally managed to get one to grow well.

This one is close to one year old and 130 cm (6,5) tall.

Lately some bright spots have appeared on newly formed leaves, that turn into dark ones in the middle and finally leaves holes behind.

Right now its living inside but I left it outside for few nights and I fear it didn't like the temperature (around 8°C [46°F] at lowest).

Does anyone know if that's what's causing it or is there another reason.

Would love to hear from you

On a peckish whim I bought some discounted mini cheese croissants from walmart. Sliced open, lightly toasted, a few slices of cado on each half (they were only 72 cents woo) and a pinch of salt on top. It was... 🤩🤯🥑Best thing Ive eaten in weeks.

Outdoor plants Windy Avocado Tree

This tree was HALF as big in March. It’s at least 16ft tall now. This is a fall/winter windy area, but most of these branches have never experienced wind like this - and this is nothing.

It will…..go back to normal, right? >.<

So far it seems super flexible (no branches have broken), but I don’t want the branches to stay that way. The fruit themselves seem unphased by the wind at least. However, most flowers seem to be blown away. (It’s not flowering right now.)

I’m hoping in 5 years the tree will canopy over half the yard. We’ll have a mango giving canopy to the other half.

Outdoor plants Pruning advice

Hi everyone, so 4 months ago I purchased a grafted buccaneer variety, I’m in Indonesia so I bought online as I couldn’t track a buccaneer down in local nursery. It is still in a grow bag under my carport due to the dry season, it will get planted around December. Anyway, I received this guy, it is vigorous but kind of opposite in shape to my idea of having some vertical trunk of 4-5 feet then the scaffold branches. I have a fork already at about 18” up. This fork is about 2” above the graft. So now thinking of shaping into a two leader tree. The right branch I will leave alone but the left I have a few options. 1. Leave alone 2. Trim the horizontal branch on the far left, 3. Remove the upright shoot on the left branch that is about 8” away from the main fork. Eventually I’m after a tree that is about 15 feet tall that is not got branches and fruit near the ground etc. I am an absolute novice. Thank you

Outdoor plants Lace bug issues

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi hope everyone's enjoying their avocado trees and fruits.

We inherited an avocado tree from the previous owner of the house and have been quite happy with it for the last year or so. The tree has been yielding good amount of fruits and they taste great so I guess the tree itself is ok in terms of overall health. In the last 6 months or so we noticed large amount of leaves falling and thought it was just simple foilage process. Today I learnt unexpectedly that it is likely due to lace bug infection. See the picture.

I did some initial research for solutions but wanted to double check with the community before execute on it. The tree is very big and the infection is relatively widespread so physical removals (like pressured hose-down or contact insecticie) might not be practical. Personally I'm more geared towards soil treatment or other chemical application but wanted you see if anyone has had similar experience before and could provide some recommendations. Appreciate your help!

PS: we have an 8-month old and we plan to continue eating the fruits. Wm

Outdoor plants What’s wrong with my tree?

It seems like my avocado tree is dying. I’ve had it for a few years in a planter and it always had new growth but never got any bigger. We moved (in the same city) and I planted it in the ground but it doesn’t look good. Ever since we moved the branches started dying while it was still in the planter. Does anyone know what could be wrong or how to save it?
